Soil And Salvation: Danes In Montana, 1906-10. Part I: Soil, Jakob Jakobsen Jan 2017

Soil And Salvation: Danes In Montana, 1906-10. Part I: Soil, Jakob Jakobsen

The Bridge

When I discovered that my great grandfather and his fiancée had participated in the founding of the Dagmar colony in Montana in 1906, I did not expect my initial interest in this to lead to a research grant from DAHS that would enable me to dive even deeper into their adventure, for which I am very grateful. My fascination with their story follows from its connection to the collective history of Danish America. In this sense, my ancestors acted as individuals, but their “navigation” took place in a “landscape” that changed due to larger developments. As a result, they can …

Bombs, Bikinis, And Godzilla: America's Fear And Fascination Of The Atomic Bomb As Evidenced Through Popular Media, 1946-1962., Joshua Samuel Scott Cornett

Online Theses and Dissertations

This project aims to illustrate the change in emotions white, middle class Americans experienced towards the atomic bomb during the nineteen forties to early nineteen sixties by examining the popular culture that they produced and consumed. These Americans described the bomb as being an object of beauty, a powerful savior, an object of prosperity, and a weapon of fear. Each of these depictions are examined in their own separate chapter with various popular culture items examined as evidence. A wide range of popular media were inspected for this study, including films, magazines, comic books, cartoons, novels, and even video games.

Enclosed From All Sides: Reading Contact And Ambivalence In The Imaginary Al-Andalus Of Hrotsvit's The Passion Of Pelagius And The Song Of Roland, Briana J. Wipf

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Hrotsvit of Gandersheim’s The Passion of Pelagius and The Song of Roland have never been read together in terms of their shared engagement with the Muslim other in the Iberian Peninsula, known during the Middle Ages as Al-Andalus. This project is a comparative reading of the texts’ approach to the presentation of an imaginary Al-Andalus as a space of alterity. The texts’ emphasis on imaginative as opposed to accurate portrayals of Andalusian history and Islamic culture suggests their engagement with a process of Christian identity-building, where the “Christian,” as portrayed in each text, is defined against and in comparison to …

Ending The Excessive Use Of Force At Home And Abroad, Mary Ellen O'Connell

Journal Articles

In the mid-1980s the American Society of International Law (ASIL) launched an initiative to engage more women and minority members in the Society and international law more generally.' Professor Henry Richardson was there, encouraging all of the new aspirants, including me. He is still doing that, and this essay in his honor is an expression of gratitude, admiration, and affection. It develops themes Hank and I have both pursued for decades: human rights, peace and non-violence, and the promotion of international law and ASIL.

Building A Model Of Consumer Warfare Theory, David Burns, Jennifer Hutchins, Rick Mathisen Jan 2017

Building A Model Of Consumer Warfare Theory, David Burns, Jennifer Hutchins, Rick Mathisen

AMTP Proceedings 2017

Consumer Warfare Theory was first proposed by Burns, Manolis and Warren. The original work hypothesized six strategies that consumers would pursue when a rival consumer purchased a product.

A study was conducted to assess the affect towards one’s rival that determines the strategies of product purchases. A model was hypothesized that reflected the strategies that rivals followed given the affect toward one’s rival.

The positive and negative affects were measured with multiple scales. The hypothesized strategies were also measured with multiple scales. The scales formed indicator variables for the constructs in the model.

Several models were evaluated to assess the …

Studies In European Integration And Institutional Change, Danko Tarabar Jan 2017

Studies In European Integration And Institutional Change, Danko Tarabar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation is a collection of empirical essays studying the drivers of institutional change and the effects of economic and political integration across countries, with a special focus on the European setting. Chapter 2 examines the drivers of market-institutional change within transition countries, the early post-communist economies undergoing an economic system switch from socialism to a market order in the immediate aftermath of communism's collapse, between 1989 and 2001. I hypothesize that the effectiveness of political liberalization, a factor identified to be the major driver of economic reform in transition countries, is conditional on the underlying cultural attitudes that influence …

Just Warfare, Or Genocide?: Oliver Cromwell And The Siege Of Drogheda, Lukas Dregne

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Oliver Cromwell has always been a subject of fierce debate since his death on September 3, 1658. The most notorious stain blotting his reputation occurred during the conquest of Ireland by forces of the English Parliament under his command. This essay will concentrate on Cromwell and his New Model Army’s siege at Drogheda, the most brutal of all the military confrontations which transpired during the settlement. From the time Cromwell’s body was exhumed and mutilated in 1661, up unto the present day, the way in which he is remembered has changed significantly. While some position Cromwell as just one of …

Laying The Foundation: The Private Rental Market And Affordable Housing, Ezra Rosser Jan 2017

Laying The Foundation: The Private Rental Market And Affordable Housing, Ezra Rosser

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The private rental housing market plays a critical, and often overlooked, role in shaping the lives of the poor and the surrounding community. This brief Article presents Matthew Desmond’s rich portrayal of low-income tenants and their landlords in his groundbreaking new book, Evicted, which shows how poor housing conditions and cycles of eviction impact poor families. The Article, which also draws upon Courtney Anderson’s work connecting housing instability with problematic student turnover at an elementary school, highlights the importance of story-telling. Without some sort of subsidy to cover the gap between the ability of the poor to pay for housing …

The Seventh-Day Adventist Church And “Growing In Christ”: From Ecclesiological Awareness To Missiological Engagement, Michée Badé Jan 2017

The Seventh-Day Adventist Church And “Growing In Christ”: From Ecclesiological Awareness To Missiological Engagement, Michée Badé

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

"“Growing in Christ” touches the theme of freedom from evil and satanic oppression––a topic with universal appeal and special relevance to many cultures. In this article I have argued that for Adventist mission to succeed cross-culturally, the following new perspectives need to be taken into consideration. First, as we near the close of cosmic conflict, the missiological perspectives demand special attention for the achievement of God’s mission (Kim 2013:127). Second, Adventists are called to “reveal the true character of God to the world as manifested in a unique way in His Son, calling everyone to worship Him as Creator and …

Exploring Identity And Negotiation Among Women Military Interrogators Through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, James Dorough-Lewis Jan 2017

Exploring Identity And Negotiation Among Women Military Interrogators Through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, James Dorough-Lewis

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Post-modern feminist security studies explore how our discourse about gender and war affects the construction of security as a concept. Military narratives valorizing the masculine over the feminine have long marginalized women warriors. In recent years, images of the torture and abuse of detainees have appropriated the representation of women interrogators during the Global War on Terrorism in particular. This research applied interpretative phenomenological analysis to the narratives of women interrogators in order to challenge the silence concerning their lived experiences by addressing how women interrogators understand their experiences both as woman and as interrogators, and how they negotiated socially …

Redefining Safety: An Analysis Of Cultural And International Safe Havens In The Context Of Genocidal Violence, Antonella Regueiro Jan 2017

Redefining Safety: An Analysis Of Cultural And International Safe Havens In The Context Of Genocidal Violence, Antonella Regueiro

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

The international community has shied away from instituting safe havens in conflict zones since the fall of Srebreniça in 1995. However, a look at the roles of safe havens in genocidal violence provides a deeper understanding of the need for these spaces to be established in a timely fashion. The strategic use of cultural safe havens as places for mass violence, necessitates the establishment of international safe havens for the protection of the targeted population, yet an analysis of the relationship between cultural safe havens and international safe havens has not been done before. As such, this research seeks to …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This research seeks to understand the reasons regarding why states intervene in conflicts? This study utilizes all European states who are a member of NATO and seeks to understand their reason for intervening in 14 post-cold war conflicts. Specifically, this study seeks to address whether the involvement of the United States, their NATO membership, and the humanitarian extent of the crisis play a role in their intervention decision. To answer these questions, this study uses an ordered probit statistical study to tests the hypothesis. The results show that the United States involvement in a conflict, and the European states membership …

Governed By Guerrillas: When Armed Insurgents Become Political Leaders, Megan Patsch Jan 2017

Governed By Guerrillas: When Armed Insurgents Become Political Leaders, Megan Patsch

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

When an internal conflict ends, many states are faced with a choice of whether or not the insurgents they were fighting against should become political figures they govern beside. Increasingly, peace settlements involve the proposed evolution of guerrilla groups into political parties, yet little is known about rebel groups' long-term effectiveness in governing (Vines and Oruitemeka, 2008). However, the recurrent interest in converting guerrillas to politicians calls for a clear understanding of the chances of success. What makes a guerilla group more or less successful in governance? I hypothesized that a state with formerly armed insurgents would produce fewer pieces …

My hope is that my work will be …

Sin And Its Place In The Experience Of Suffering: Presenting The Basis For A Sound Theodicy, Roman Wiens Jan 2017

Sin And Its Place In The Experience Of Suffering: Presenting The Basis For A Sound Theodicy, Roman Wiens

Master's Theses

Topic

One of the most significant issues in theism is the obvious existence of evil and suffering. Thus many philosophers (especially Atheists) propose this fact alone negates the existence of an all-loving, omnipotent, and caring God. This attacks both the integrity of God and the coherence of the scriptural accounts. In response, theologians around the world proposed theodicies to show that the existence of a God, as portrayed in the Bible, is coherent with suffering in this world.

Purpose

The different approaches to this problem are categorized in four categories, outlined, and evaluated in one chapter about the most noteworthy …

An Evaluation Of The Definition Of Exhaustive Foreknowledge In The Writings Of Richard Rice, Dennis E. Akawobsa Jan 2017

An Evaluation Of The Definition Of Exhaustive Foreknowledge In The Writings Of Richard Rice, Dennis E. Akawobsa

Master's Theses

Problem

This thesis addresses the conflict of interpretation between Richard Rice’s model of God’s exhaustive knowledge of the future as a realm of possibilities and the generally accepted traditional model of God’s exhaustive definite knowledge of the future. In harmony with the traditional perspective, Richard Rice has affirmed God’s exhaustive knowledge of the past and the present. However, in contrast to the traditional perspective, he has denied God’s exhaustive definite foreknowledge of future free choices. According to Rice, God can know everything there is to know. This implies that, on one hand, the future does not yet exist, so God …

The Karadžić Genocide Conviction: Inferences, Intent, And The Necessity To Redefine Genocide, Milena Sterio

Emory International Law Review

In March 2016, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) convicted former Bosnian Serb leader, Radovan Karadžic, of genocide and crimes against humanity. According to the Trial Chamber, the crimes were committed as part of four joint criminal enterprises in which Karadžic was a protagonist. The Article will specifically focus on the interpretation of genocide by the ICTY judges in this recent decision. The Trial Chamber’s interpretation of the intent requirement under the Genocide Convention and the customary law definition of genocide is novel and had not been espoused by past tribunals. This Article will demonstrate that in …

Applying The Law Of Proportionality To Cyber Conflict: Suggestions For Practitioners, Eric Boylan Jan 2017

Applying The Law Of Proportionality To Cyber Conflict: Suggestions For Practitioners, Eric Boylan

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Note examines the applicability of the law of armed conflict, and particularly the concept of proportionality, to cyber attacks. After exploring deviations in terminology that may lead to confusion in the field, it considers the difficulties associated with applying an area of law first implemented in the post-World War II era to technologies that have only become vitally important in recent years. Delving into some of the facets of cyber technology that make it unique as a potential battleground, this Note examines why those qualities make the law of proportionality particularly difficult to apply. Acknowledging that the law of …
