Psychosocial Care In The Syrian Refugee Crisis, Miller Richmond Jan 2017

Psychosocial Care In The Syrian Refugee Crisis, Miller Richmond

Honors Theses

The Syrian civil war created millions of refugees who are internally displaced across Syria and in surrounding host countries. The use of violence and forms of warfare against the Geneva Convention make this crisis particularly traumatic for civilians, leading to high rates of PTSD and depression among the refugee population. Relying on concepts of structural violence and the ecology of health, I justify the use of a psychosocial framework to build refugee crisis response in Jordan. I performed ethnographic fieldwork to collect data in the form of stakeholder and care provider interviews and training manuals, and I analyzed and critiqued …

U.S. Military Psychologists' Contemporary Lived Experiences Of Burnout, Rui Heng Babilonia Jan 2017

U.S. Military Psychologists' Contemporary Lived Experiences Of Burnout, Rui Heng Babilonia

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Currently, the high level of burnout among military psychologists resulting from contemporary military service is gaining attention. However, there is insufficient knowledge of their lived experiences of burnout. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore burnout, based on the military occupational mental health, military job demand-resources models, and biopsychosocial models. Eleven active duty and prior service military psychologists were recruited for interviews using snowball sampling. The first phase of data analysis employed NVivo software. The second and third phase used the 7-step modified version of the Van Kamm method, resulting in 7 themes and 1 discrepant case. The …

Effect Of Contemplative Pedagogy On The Ecoliteracy Of Undergraduate Public State University Students, Michael Vincent Lees Jan 2017

Effect Of Contemplative Pedagogy On The Ecoliteracy Of Undergraduate Public State University Students, Michael Vincent Lees

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Undergraduate students lack the opportunity and environment to contemplate and develop ecoliteracy skills that serve to integrate subject matter into their everyday experiences. Ecoliteracy is grounded in Capra's web of life theoretical framework and represents students' capacities to read world systems objectively with their head, heart, hands, and spirit. Contemplative pedagogy provides educators with exercises that give students time to reflect on the integration of learning. Ecoliteracy and contemplative pedagogy research has shown little quantitative data pertaining to how contemplative pedagogy affects undergraduate student ecoliteracy. To address that gap, this causal-comparative study measured the use of contemplative pedagogy exercises relative …

Harvest Festival By Yann-Jong Hwang: A Piano Duet Inspired By Taiwanese Folk Tunes, Wei-Sian Chen

Theses and Dissertations--Music

The purpose of this study is to provide an introduction and analysis of Harvest Festival, a work for piano four hands by Taiwanese composer Yann-Jong Hwang. This work incorporates elements of traditional Taiwanese music that is largely unfamiliar to performers and listeners beyond the border of Taiwan.

With the exception of Professor Hwang’s own journal article on this piece, this project is the only study of Harvest Festival available in the United States or Taiwan. This research will be meaningful to both performers and piano teachers as an encouragement to include Yann-Jong Hwang’s work within their concert repertory.

This …

The Birth Of American Empire: Spain, The Philippines, And The Debates Over Expansion, Clayton A. Richards Jan 2017

The Birth Of American Empire: Spain, The Philippines, And The Debates Over Expansion, Clayton A. Richards

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The whirlwind of activity that occurred in American foreign policy at the end of the nineteenth century is largely forgotten about. Situated between the Civil War and the First World War, this era is often overlooked in terms of importance to American history. It was, however, a major formative time in the history of the United States. During these years, the United States committed to actions outside of its borders that would have major ramifications on the future course of the country. These events were the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War, both fought in the period from 1898 to …

Taxes For Robots: Automation And The Future Of The Labor Market, Emily Holden

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

In the past there have been many panics caused by technology that ended positively for the economy and society, but is the current wave of technological unemployment caused by robotics and A.I. different? The purpose of this literary review is to evaluate the current wave of technological unemployment in relation to past cases and determine whether the present situation is another transition between dominant sectors of the economy or the beginning of a permanent form of technological unemployment. The results were that there are many aspects of this instance that differentiate it from past cases of technological unemployment. There are …

Law Schools Harm Genízaros And Other Indigenous People By Misunderstanding Aba Policy, Bill Piatt, Moises Gonzales, Katja Wolf Jan 2017

Law Schools Harm Genízaros And Other Indigenous People By Misunderstanding Aba Policy, Bill Piatt, Moises Gonzales, Katja Wolf

New Mexico Law Review

Law schools justifiably seek to enroll a diverse student body in order to enrich the academic experience and environment, and to provide attorneys who will serve all segments of our society. American law schools enjoy the constitutional right to maintain such diversity. Indeed, accreditation standards promulgated by the American Bar Association (“ABA”) require it. The Association of American Law Schools carries a similar mandate. In seeking to create a diverse student body, law schools offer applicants the opportunity to identify their backgrounds. There generally is no “diversity police” checking on the accuracy of the self-identification as a member of a …

Centralization And Decentralization In Natural Disaster Response: A Comparative Case Study Of 3.11 Earthquake And Hurricane Katrina, Muxuan Wang Jan 2017

Centralization And Decentralization In Natural Disaster Response: A Comparative Case Study Of 3.11 Earthquake And Hurricane Katrina, Muxuan Wang

Scripps Senior Theses

March 11, 2011 Earthquake in Japan and 2005 Hurricane Katrina both caused significant destruction and were both viewed as examples of government failures in natural disaster management. One year after the disasters, both countries enacted several policy reforms in response to their failures. However, while in the U.S, the central government's emergency power was strengthened, the DPJ (Democratic Party of Japan)'s government carried out reforms to strengthen the local governments. On the other hand, the other prominent political party in Japan, the LDP (Liberal Democratic Party), argued for more centralized power. How did these parties take different lessons from the …

Structural Inadequacies, Poorly Crafted Legislation, Eroding Imperial Authority, Escalating Confessional Conflict And The Eventual Intractability Of Two Ruling Princes, Caused The Thirty Years War, Arthur N. Traver

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

Europe in the 16th Century was experiencing radical social, political and economic change. Technological development was apparent in all aspects of society. Most noteworthy was the invention of the printing press which enabled rapid dissemination of information to a rapidly increasingly literate general population. Towns, the development of trades and the provision of specialized services were rapidly evolving. European commerce was changing from a feudal structure to a money based economy. That is, currency in return for goods and services was replacing a structure of peasants providing life essentials protected by aristocratic nobility. The centralized, complicated, hierarchical feudal political structure …

Is Love A Battlefield? The New Politics Of Marriage Equality In The Aging War On Terror, Jackie Givelber Jan 2017

Is Love A Battlefield? The New Politics Of Marriage Equality In The Aging War On Terror, Jackie Givelber

Scripps Senior Theses

When Donald Trump took the stage as the Republican presidential nominee at the Republican National Convention in July 2016, he made a historical appeal to LGBTQ Americans: to the boisterous applause of a Republican audience, he promised "to protect LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology." Utilizing this historical moment as an indicator of shifting political views around LGBTQ rights in the Republican Party and the US nation-state as a whole, this paper links contemporary iterations of the War on Terror to the legalization of same-sex marriage in June 2015. Connecting same-sex marriage to the …

Captive: Zoometric Operations In Gaza, Irus Braverman Jan 2017

Captive: Zoometric Operations In Gaza, Irus Braverman

Journal Articles

“We are the only people in this world who are living under such total occupation. Israel sees us as being equal to our animals, and sometimes they even value us less than our animals.” This quote, from the founder of the Gaza Zoo, demonstrates both the significance and the complexities of human-animal relations in Gaza, especially at times of siege and war. My article draws on ethnographic encounters and investigative analysis to relay how Gaza’s spatial confinement generally, and the Israeli incursion into Gaza of summer 2014 in particular, has lent itself to a radicalized discursive interplay between the animalization …

Reviewing The Use Of Injury Screening Assessments And Identifying Risk Of Injury, Riley A. Kenney Jan 2017

Reviewing The Use Of Injury Screening Assessments And Identifying Risk Of Injury, Riley A. Kenney

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Lower extremity injures account for over half of reported sports related injuries with the ankle and knee being the most commonly injured joints. The majority of non-contact injuries related to these two joints can potentially be prevented through individualized prevention programs. Biomechanical injury screening has the potential to identify the risk factors associated with injury and allows the implementation of targeted rehabilitation strategies to combat the identified deficits. There is substantial need for screening assessments that are practical and accurate for the clinical athletic trainer. This literature reviewed examined the dorsiflexion lunge test, Functional Movement Screen (FMS), Y-Balance Test, Star …

The Central Intelligence Agency And Cuba: How The Trap Of Success Led To The Bay Of Pigs, Yandy Orozco Jan 2017

The Central Intelligence Agency And Cuba: How The Trap Of Success Led To The Bay Of Pigs, Yandy Orozco

Theses and Dissertations

This research looks at how covert operations in Iran and Guatemala shaped the decision to launch the Bay of Pigs invasion, and why the United States government embarked on an operation that had little chance of success. Key areas of discussion are the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and its role in the removal of Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadeq (Iran) and President Jacobo Arbenz (Guatemala), the Dulles faction, the anti-Castro program, and President Kennedy’s relationship with the CIA. Upon examining these areas, the study shows that the covert action success in Iran and Guatemala fueled American hubris and obviated the recognition …

Attitudes Towards Face-To-Face Meetings In Virtual Engineering Teams: Perceptions From A Survey Of Defense Projects, Lawrence R. Blenke, Abhijit Gosavi, William Daughton

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Modes of communication used in virtual defense projects have changed dramatically over the years with tools such as email and video-conferencing dominating face-to-face (FTF) meetings. We conducted a survey at a defense firm with an aim to test current attitudes towards FTF meetings – with respect to significant problems faced, project success, transfer of technical requirements, preference for FTF vis-à-vis virtual meetings, differences between virtual and co-located environments, criticality of various forms of communication, and whether FTF meetings were scheduled as often as desired. Our survey participants, about one hundred in number, were experienced engineers, technicians, and program managers – …

Reforming Only Half: A Study Of Practice-Based Teacher Education In Traditional Field Placements, Anthony Tuf Francis Jan 2017

Reforming Only Half: A Study Of Practice-Based Teacher Education In Traditional Field Placements, Anthony Tuf Francis

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Practice-based teacher education is poised to improve teacher education by focusing on interns’ enactment of complex teaching practices and helping them develop these professional skills. However, much of this work has yet to study the trajectory of learning between university training and field experiences. This article explores seven history and social studies interns’ experiences with their cooperating teachers as they utilize two practices from their teacher training. Findings suggest that though interns were trained with carefully scaffolded experiences to use ambitious models of teaching and learning at the university, once they moved to the field classroom they were often on …

The Ethics Of Unwinnable War, Dominic Tierney Jan 2017

The Ethics Of Unwinnable War, Dominic Tierney

Political Science Faculty Works

According to just war theory, military campaigns should only be fought as a last resort, with the goal of correcting a grave evil, and where there is a high probability of success. But what happens when a military campaign unravels and becomes unwinnable? How can a leader reconcile just war theory with the need to extricate the country from a quagmire? In recent decades, US presidents have repeatedly faced such moral dilemmas, as campaigns in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq all became unwinnable. When victory is no longer achievable, leaders should dial down the goals of the war, resist the …

Efficacy Of An Acoustic Hailing Device As An Avian Dispersal Tool, Peter E. Schlichting, Amanda E. Holland, James C. Beasley, Albert L. Bryan, Robert A. Kennamer, Travis L. Devault, Bradley F. Blackwell, Olin E. Rhodes Jr. Jan 2017

Efficacy Of An Acoustic Hailing Device As An Avian Dispersal Tool, Peter E. Schlichting, Amanda E. Holland, James C. Beasley, Albert L. Bryan, Robert A. Kennamer, Travis L. Devault, Bradley F. Blackwell, Olin E. Rhodes Jr.

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Bird strikes are a major safety and financial concern for modern aviation. Audible stimuli are common bird dispersal techniques, but their effectiveness is limited by the saliency and relevance of the stimulus. Furthermore, high ambient sound levels present at airfields might require that effective audible stimuli rely more on total volume (i.e., exceeding physiological tolerances) than ecological relevance. Acoustic hailing devices (AHD) are capable of sound output with a narrow beamwidth and at volumes high enough to cause physical discomfort at long distances. We tested the effectiveness of anAHD as a dispersal tool on freeranging birds recognized as hazardous to …

Impact Of Prophylactic Intranasal Oxytocin Administration On Symptoms Of Post-Traumatic Stress, Morgan A. Thomas Jan 2017

Impact Of Prophylactic Intranasal Oxytocin Administration On Symptoms Of Post-Traumatic Stress, Morgan A. Thomas

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that affects people after instances of severe emotional trauma. Research suggests that oxytocin treatment decreases PTSD symptoms. This study served to evaluate the efficacy of intranasal oxytocin pre-treatment on symptoms related to PTSD. The hypotheses are that oxytocin will decrease fear and anxiety, and increase reward-seeking behaviors. Sprague Dawley rats were assigned to three groups (Control, Stress, Oxytocin, and Oxytocin+Stress; n=6 per group) to conduct this experiment. Prior to foot shock treatment, rats were trained to expect a food reward (Kellogg’s Froot Loops) in an open field enclosure. Subsequently, the Oxytocin …

Understanding The Positive Correlates Of Veteran Suicide: A Review And Call For Research, Kevin R. Driscoll Jan 2017

Understanding The Positive Correlates Of Veteran Suicide: A Review And Call For Research, Kevin R. Driscoll

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Aristotle’s saying “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts” is as true today as it was in the mid 300 B.C., especially when it comes to making federal healthcare policy decisions. The Veterans Administration is facing an epidemic amongst its veteran population and is looking for novel ways to ensure “no solider is left behind” despite a complex data structure that makes it hard to extrapolate rates of suicide.

An epidemiologic approach grounded in the understanding of patterns as well as identifying the risk factors for suicide is at the epicenter for a population health approach. Positive …

The Cost Of (Non)Compliance: An Expose Of The United States' Immigration Detention Policy And Its Failure To Comply With International Standards, Jessica Wright Jan 2017

The Cost Of (Non)Compliance: An Expose Of The United States' Immigration Detention Policy And Its Failure To Comply With International Standards, Jessica Wright

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

The persistence of brutal warfare sparked an international movement against torture at the turn of the twentieth century. By 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) introduced a ban on torture.' Two decades later, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) followed suit, prohibiting member States from subjecting individuals to torture. However, in decades following said treaties, brutal dictatorships proved that short provisions in international documents are not enough to prevent torture. The plight of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet illustrated the weaknesses of the international framework on torture. Despite the heinous acts of torture committed under his …

A Portrait Of Paul Henriksen, Thomas H. Henriksen Jan 2017

A Portrait Of Paul Henriksen, Thomas H. Henriksen

The Bridge

Paul Henriksen, my father, was one of those people whose life could have been a Hollywood film. It unreeled from the hardscrabble streets of turn-of-the-century Copenhagen, to five years spent before the mast in saltwater seas, to the battlefields of Flanders in World War I, and finally to the freshwaters of the Great Lakes, where he became a prominent sports figure in mid-twentieth-century Detroit. Hard work, persistence, and photogenic looks helped propel him toward the fulfillment of his own American dream.
