Understanding how microbiomes affect host resistance, parasite virulence, and parasite-associated diseases requires a collaborative effort between parasitologists, microbial ecologists, virologists, and immunologists. We hereby propose the Parasite Microbiome Project to bring together researchers with complementary expertise and to study the role of microbes in host-parasite interactions. Data from the Parasite Microbiome Project will help identify the mechanisms driving microbiome variation in parasites and infected hosts and how that variation is associated with the ecology and evolution of parasites and their disease outcomes. This is a call to arms to prevent fragmented research endeavors, encourage best practices in experimental approaches, and …

It is by now axiomatic that the objective of the civil lawsuit has evolved. Litigants no longer routinely resolve their disputes through trial but instead engage in pretrial battles designed to extract favorable settlements. Modern litigation revolves around protracted discovery and dispositive motions, driven by two primary dynamics: (1) the maximization of fees for lawyers who charge their clients by the hour; and (2) the desire to make litigation as painful as possible for an adversary so that settlement becomes the adversary’s better option. We have, in short, fostered a pretrial industry that can relegate the merits of a dispute …
Protecting Our Defenders: The Need To Ensure Due Process For Women In The Military Before Amending The Selective Service Act, Kelsey L. Campbell
Protecting Our Defenders: The Need To Ensure Due Process For Women In The Military Before Amending The Selective Service Act, Kelsey L. Campbell
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
On January 1, 2016, all previously closed frontline military occupations were opened to women for the first time in U.S. history. Shortly thereafter, several military leaders and politicians stated that due to the change in policy, women were then "equal to men" in the military and, therefore, should be required to register for Selective Service-the system that maintains a list of Americans fit for service in the event a military draft is requested by the president. While the recent change extended employment opportunity to women within the military, a number of polices and laws prevent women from achieving equality in …

On Digital Doctrine: The Mediatization Of Religious Culture, Celina Yebba
On Digital Doctrine: The Mediatization Of Religious Culture, Celina Yebba
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Media is a constant feature in our modern lives, transforming and influencing society and culture. This study examined how increased participation in digital media has changed the nature of religious representation, culture, and practice. Data was collected from both secular websites and religious media spaces where people post information about religion. This discussion is a necessary step in determining how media has not only become embedded in religious culture but has influenced the transformation of American religious culture. The first part of this analysis concentrated on uncovering rhetorical strategies in religious digital spaces. I assumed that organizational identification would be …

The Rhetoric Of Transgression: Reconstructing Female Authority Through Wu Zetian's Legacy, Rachael Rothstein-Safra
The Rhetoric Of Transgression: Reconstructing Female Authority Through Wu Zetian's Legacy, Rachael Rothstein-Safra
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This study examines representations of Wu Zetian in the biographical tradition of the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth centuries, as well as within the subsequent vernacular literature of the Ming and Qing periods. I analyze the traditional use and construction of female stereotypes (and female-oriented flaws and vices) in the rhetoric of official histories and fictional narratives and their application to representations of Wu Zetian. I argue that authors, anxious of discord engendered and caused by women occupying positions of political authority, sought to delegitimize Wu Zetian’s reign and subsequently cultivated a “rhetoric of female transgression.” I further argue that the …

Iganga’S Women: How Iganga’S Culture Influences Women’S Opportunities, Genevieve Chan
Iganga’S Women: How Iganga’S Culture Influences Women’S Opportunities, Genevieve Chan
MA IDS Thesis Projects
A common effort to combat gender inequality is to create more access for women in employment, education, and skill development opportunities. Research has found that women continue to face difficulties to engage in such opportunities despite the policies and reforms that appear to have increased access. The structural changes have made little effect on changing the cultural factors that prevent women from effectively engaging in opportunities and thus, gain empowerment. This study seeks to explore the culture of Iganga, Uganda and how it influences women’s opportunities. The research project investigated Iganga’s cultural factors in which nine participants described how the …
No Justice, No Peace: Addressing A Framework For Post-Conflict Restorative Measures And Transitional Justice In Regard To Foreign Fighters In The Syrian Civil War, Travis Rumohr
MA IDS Thesis Projects
The Syrian Civil War (2011-present) is one of the great humanitarian disasters of the modern age. The unprecedented involvement of foreign volunteers in the conflict, the complex and multi-layered nature of the war, and the allegations of war crimes against nearly all participants have made the conflict convoluted and complicated. If Syrians are to ever move on from the barbarism of this war, there must be a transitional justice process that addresses the wrongs committed against them. While transitional justice is an ever-evolving practice, it faces unique challenges in the Syrian theater. This thesis seeks to analyze and suggest possible …

The Life Of A Child Refugee: How Host-Country Schools Can Create Positive Growth, Claire Mcilwain
MA IDS Thesis Projects
The numbers of children affected by war continues to grow as conflicts around the globe begin, continue, and are reignited forcing them from their homes in search of safety. Children currently make up more than half of the worlds refugees. These children are at risk of poor psychosocial development as a result of the traumatizing experiences of their migratory process. Upon arrival to high-income host-countries, children are placed in the school systems, as a primary place of first contact schools can be a place of sanctuary for children and develop positive psychosocial growth. This study seeks to understand the experiences …

A Systems Theoretic-Based Framework To Discover Pathologies In Acquisition System Governance, Charles B. Keating, Joseph M. Bradley, Polinpapilinho F. Katina, Ra'ed M. Jaradat
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
The acquisition field continues to face increasing pressures to perform under conditions of escalating complexity, uncertainty, and ambiguity. These conditions suggest that traditional approaches, practices, and acquisition technologies might be incongruent with support demands for acquisition practitioners. This research is focused on exploiting and extending recent developments in Complex System Governance (CSG) to advance the acquisition field. CSG is focused on the design, execution, and evolution of fundamental system functions necessary for control, communications, coordination, and integration of complex systems (e.g., acquisition). CSG is based in Systems Theory (fundamental laws governing complex systems), Management Cybernetics (the science of effective system …
Unequal Before The Law: An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of International Humanitarian Law And The Implications Of Recognizing Belligerents, Natalie Murphy
Unequal Before The Law: An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of International Humanitarian Law And The Implications Of Recognizing Belligerents, Natalie Murphy
Theses & ETDs
Scholars have spent the past few decades extensively assimilating the law of noninternational armed conflict to that of other pertinent bodies of law, particularly the law of international armed conflict and customary international law. Despite its impressive development in the past two decades, there are definite limits to how far the law of noninternational armed conflict can be assimilated through an approach of analogy to the law of international armed conflict. In an international armed conflict, the states engaged in combat are afforded the same rights and guarantees, as well as given the same legal obligations, under the laws of …
Accountability And Decision Making In Autonomous Warfare: Who Is Responsible?, Amos N. Guiora
Accountability And Decision Making In Autonomous Warfare: Who Is Responsible?, Amos N. Guiora
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
This Article addresses the use of autonomous weapons systems (“AWS”). This Article only concerns itself with AWS used for offensive purposes. That is distinct from defensive weapons systems, including Israel’s Iron Dome and U.S. missile defense systems. Similarly, this Article does not address use of AWS for purposes of neutralizing Improvised Explosive Devices (“IED”) or evacuating a wounded soldier. The use of AWS potentially minimizes risks to soldiers—at least in the short term. It suggests sleek technology. The dead are a hazy visual on a screen. It is antiseptic, as neither the smell of burning flesh nor the sound of …

Quaker Religious Thought
Excerpt: "Quantitatively speaking, if it were not for Quaker Religious Thought, my credentials as a published scholar would be slim indeed. By the time I reached the age of 65, they would have consisted of one published lecture (the 1968 Shrewsbury Lecture) and one book review (in the Anglican Theological Review. Everything else — articles, comments, book reviews, editorials — had been published in QRT."

Three Essays On Population Dynamics, Trade And Growth, Anna Maximova
Three Essays On Population Dynamics, Trade And Growth, Anna Maximova
Theses and Dissertations--Economics
Changes in immigration patterns and differential fertility choices shape the economies of both developed and developing countries. However, these changes affect the economies of developed and developing nations in different ways. This study aims to understand the changes in population dynamics, brought about by differences in cross--country differential fertility choices and migration patterns, and how these changes affect economic development via the channels of international trade and cross--country human capital accumulation.
Chapter 1 discusses the background, data and literature on the patterns and composition of immigration and international trade, which are further explored in Chapter 2 for the world sample …
War/Crimes And The Limits Of The Doctrine Of Sources, Steven R. Ratner
War/Crimes And The Limits Of The Doctrine Of Sources, Steven R. Ratner
Book Chapters
International humanitarian law (IHL) and international criminal law (ICL) are the product of lawmaking processes that are not captured in the black-letter doctrine of sources under which Article 38 of the ICJ Statute is the rule of recognition for international law. Despite efforts by certain institutional players and scholars to place these two regimes squarely within Article 38, both remain distinct in terms of how actors determine whether a purported rule is a legal rule. These distinctions constitute a challenge to the idea of a unified rule of recognition and argue instead for looking for indicators (not rules) about a …

A Serengeti Land Ethic: Deconstructing Environmental Dualism In A Critical Ecosystem, Kristyn Gorton
Honors Program Theses
This study synthesizes information on the ecology of the Serengeti Plains biome, its landscape and human history, the ethnoscience of its indigenous populations, and the current management objectives of the Serengeti’s protected areas in order to evidence the suitability of indigenous habitat management technologies in the preservation of this ecosystem. Effects of indigenous removal include the encroachment of tsetse fly bush, reduction in grassland diversity and primary productivity, and decline in the Serengeti’s keystone species, the blue wildebeest. The models of conventional national parks and community-based conservation alternatives will be evaluated in order to demonstrate the shortcomings of an environmentally …

A Declaration Of The State Of The Colony: Type Facsimile Edition, Edward Waterhouse, Dylan Ruediger
British Virginia
Edward Waterhouse’s Declaration of the State of the Colony is the Virginia Company's official response to the Powhatan attack on the plantation in the spring of 1622. The attack, often called the “Jamestown Massacre,” cost the lives of 25% of the population of the colony (individually listed by Waterhouse in a harrowing catalog of the dead). It led to massive retaliation by the English. It also significantly changed the ideological basis of the colonial project in Virginia from one based on naïve hopes that Indians would voluntarily subordinate themselves to the English towards an aggressive colonialism of dispossession. Waterhouse’s text …
