The Manufacturing And Trafficking Of Narcotics: An Overview Of Global Laws, 50 J. Marshall L. Rev. 813 (2017), Waseem Ahmad Qureshi

UIC Law Review

This paper will focus mainly on the use, manufacturing, trafficking, and adverse effects of narcotic drugs. In addition, the major laws against the manufacturing, use, and trafficking of drugs will also be discussed, and the successes and hurdles in preventing the trafficking, use, and manufacturing of narcotic drugs will also be evaluated. Strictly curbing the manufacturing and trafficking of narcotic drugs can reduce the spread of this abhorrence in society.

Cyberensuring Security, Justin Hurwitz Jan 2017

Cyberensuring Security, Justin Hurwitz

Connecticut Law Review

Cybersecurity is one of the most pressing and legally difficult issues facing this country today. It touches every aspect of modern political and social life, the economy, and national security. From the OPM and IRS breaches, to the Sony hack, to attacks on hospitals and health insurers, to attacks on domestic and international infrastructure, to domestic and international surveillance, cybersecurity concerns are omnipresent. For technical, legal, and practical, reasons, they also have proven extremely difficult to address. This Article draws from the economic literatures on strict liability and insurance to argue that cyber incidents generally, and data breaches specifically, should …

Consequences Of Sexual Violence During Civil Conflicts For Post-Colonial Democratization, Kathleen Clark Jan 2017

Consequences Of Sexual Violence During Civil Conflicts For Post-Colonial Democratization, Kathleen Clark

Commonwealth Review of Political Science

Countries face large obstacles in the post-civil conflict period, including democratization. The nature of the warfare during the civil conflict may have important implications for the prospects for future democratization. Specifically, the experience of sexual violence during civil conflicts may hinder democratization. I argue that countries that experience prevalent sexual violence during civil conflicts have lower chances for post-conflict democratization than those without. This occurs through the psychological consequences of sexual violence on victims and communities. Sexual violence negatively impacts victims, but it can also have more widespread negative consequences for society. Communities of the victims may collectively respond to …

The Danger Of Foreignization: Ling Shuhua’S Ancient Melodies, Xiaoqing Liu Jan 2017

The Danger Of Foreignization: Ling Shuhua’S Ancient Melodies, Xiaoqing Liu

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Lawrence Venuti’s foreignization theory, with its link of translation strategy with power struggle, is one of the most influential theories in translation studies since the 1990s. At the same time, his theory has also been subject to heated debate due to its loosely defined terms, prescriptive approach, binary thinking, elitist tendency, and other issues. One issue stands out in particular: contrary to its goal of resistance against Anglo- American hegemony, foreignization can lead to its opposite—exoticism or Orientalism—under certain circumstances. In this paper, I examine the validity and application of Venuti’s foregnization theory in Ling Shuhua’s English autobiographical work Ancient …

Form And Function : Settler Women As Cultural Conveyors In Narratives Of The Early Frontier, Rowenna Miller Jan 2017

Form And Function : Settler Women As Cultural Conveyors In Narratives Of The Early Frontier, Rowenna Miller

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Narratives of the early American frontier precede even the founding of the American nation, and continued to serve as the setting for novelists and, later, filmmakers. This thesis explores the representation and role of women in three distinct eras of narrative, all focusing on narratives written about the 1750-1780s time period. These three eras, when examined for roles women play in these narratives, reveal variations in themes as cultural anxieties of both authors and audiences move from wartime concerns to settlement to reassertions of culture. While early primary source narratives take little interest in women's perspectives and roles, novels of …

Responding To Marginalization: Language Practices Of African-Born Muslim Refugee Youths In An American Urban High School, Jie Y. Park Jan 2017

Responding To Marginalization: Language Practices Of African-Born Muslim Refugee Youths In An American Urban High School, Jie Y. Park

Education

This article offers an analysis of how refugee youths from Africa used and shifted languages and discourses in the United States. Drawing on sociocultural theories of language and utilizing ethnographic discourse and classroom observation data, the author illustrates the varied ways in which three high school–aged refugee youths used languages to make sense of who and where they are; respond to social, religious, and linguistic marginalization in the United States; and challenge narrow perceptions of African Muslims. This article brings to fore a group that, although facing a unique set of challenges in the United States, is rarely included in …

Arvo Part, Sieben Magnificat-Antiphonen: A Transcription For Wind Ensemble, Julian Hartridge Sconyers Iii

Theses and Dissertations

Amongst late twentieth and early twenty-first century music, Arvo Pärt’s compositional style is a unique musical voice and has led to the composer becoming the most performed living classical composer for multiple years. His unmistakable tintinnabuli style is often labeled as part of the post-modernist movement, the minimalist genre, sacred minimalism, or even as neo-medieval. Despite any label, his music is as distinctive as it is revolutionary, and many of his works are considered cornerstone works of the late-twentieth and early-twenty-first centuries. However, despite the popularity of his works, most of his music is written for choir, orchestra, small chamber …

The Institutional Case For Partisan Gerrymandering Claims, G. Michael Parsons Jan 2017

The Institutional Case For Partisan Gerrymandering Claims, G. Michael Parsons

Cardozo Law Review de•novo

For voters hoping the Supreme Court’s 2017 Term brings relief from partisan gerrymandering, the end of the 2016 Term was inauspicious. In Cooper v. Harris, the majority assumed the legitimacy of “partisan advantage” arguments while the dissent—including Justice Kennedy—warned about the “serious institutional and federalism implications” of judicial intervention in the redistricting process. If past is prologue, this concern for institutional and structural interests does not bode well.

Valkyrie, Eric Philip Yanders Jan 2017

Valkyrie, Eric Philip Yanders

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

My thesis is a science fiction novella, entitled Valkyrie. My novella focuses on the character Valerie Byrne and her mission to save a utopian city, created in the wake of a third world war, from a megalomaniac android named Dr. Viper. Valerie witnessed her parent's death when she was nine years old, at the hands of the tyrannical government that was responsible for the war. During the conflict, she willingly transformed herself into a cyborg so that she may enact her revenge, and helped overthrow the tyranny that murdered her family. The novella follows her twenty years after the war …

Fueling The Terrorist Fires With The First Amendment: Religious Freedom, The Anti-Lgbt Right, And Interest Convergence Theory, Kyle C. Velte Jan 2017

Fueling The Terrorist Fires With The First Amendment: Religious Freedom, The Anti-Lgbt Right, And Interest Convergence Theory, Kyle C. Velte

Brooklyn Law Review

This article argues that there is a connection between formal equality for LGBT Americans and the United States’ foreign policy and national security interests. It makes that connection utilizing Professor Derek Bell’s interest convergence paradigm. It argues that the new agenda of the American Religious Right is one that seeks to assert quasi-theocratic and anti-Establishment positions in litigation as well as in its promulgation of anti-LGBT laws. This agenda is cloaked in the garb of “religious freedom,” but the Religious Right’s definition of “religious freedom” is one that runs counter to our long-standing understanding of that principle as one that …

A Short History Of The 9th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, William Gay Jan 2017

A Short History Of The 9th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, William Gay

A with Honors Projects

A critical price was paid at the Battle of Shiloh by the Ninth Illinois, a regiment made up of mostly German immigrants who had not even been born in the United States but gave their lives willingly and bravely in the face of grim odds to defend the land they called home. In the end, the Ninth had one of the war’s highest single-day casualty rates of any regiment of troops, North or South. Without one of the greatest shows of military strength, commitment, and discipline which the Ninth exhibited on that bloody Sunday, the Union would have suffered a …

A Contemporary Analysis And Comparison Of Kurdish National Movements: Syria, Iraq, And Turkey, Grayson Lanza Jan 2017

A Contemporary Analysis And Comparison Of Kurdish National Movements: Syria, Iraq, And Turkey, Grayson Lanza

Honors Undergraduate Theses

As commonly understood, and particularly espoused by Kurdish nationalists, the Kurds are by far the largest ethnic group in the world without their own nation-state. An estimated 2 to 2.5 million ethnically Kurdish people inhabit portions of Syria. There are approximately 6.5 million ethnically Kurdish people in Iraq, 7.6 million in Iran, and 16 million in Turkey. Overall, there are about 30 million Kurds in the world. In the broader context of the Kurdish nationalist struggle, this paper suggests that there is a growing bipolar hegemony for power over the control of Kurdish land and politics. Research was predicated around …

A Triangulation Based Coverage Path Planning For A Mobile Robot With Circular Sensing Range, Vatana An Jan 2017

A Triangulation Based Coverage Path Planning For A Mobile Robot With Circular Sensing Range, Vatana An

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, two coverage path planning (CPP) approaches for a nonholonomic mobile robot are proposed. The first approach is the Local Coverage Path Planning (LCPP) approach which is designed for all sensing ranges. The second approach is the Global Coverage Path Planning (GCPP) approach which is designed for sufficient sensing range that can observe all points of interests in the target region (TR). The LCPP approach constructs CP after finding observer points for all local regions in the TR. The GCPP approach computes observer points after CP construction. Beginning with the sample TR, the LCPP approach requires 8 algorithms …

Prosecutorial Ethics In Retrospect, Bruce A. Green Jan 2017

Prosecutorial Ethics In Retrospect, Bruce A. Green

Faculty Scholarship

This essay examines the ethical regulation of prosecutors over the past three decades. The topic is important from the perspective of criminal justice, no less than legal ethics, because prosecutors are centrally responsible for administering the criminal law. Courts assume that the principal role in regulating prosecutors should be played by the states' formal attorney disciplinary processes rather than by civil liability or judicial oversight in criminal cases. However, there has been a well-justified academic and professional consensus that the disciplinary processes fail to fulfill their expected role because, when it comes to prosecutors, ethics rules are neither sufficiently restrictive …

A Training Effectiveness Evaluation Of Uh-60a/L Simulated Environments: An Interdisciplinary Approach, Martin Goodwin Jan 2017

A Training Effectiveness Evaluation Of Uh-60a/L Simulated Environments: An Interdisciplinary Approach, Martin Goodwin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The U.S. military continues to develop and expand its use of simulation-based aviation training. While traditional simulation-based training continues to be a proven training method, game-based simulation has become more sophisticated and may provide viable training options in some applications. The use of game-based simulation with traditional simulation-based training can potentially reduce costs, enhance return on investment, advance training objectives, and inform future training environment designs. Current fiscal limitations are driving the need for more efficient training methods, while operational requirements are dictating training protocols that produce optimum levels of readiness. The gap between fiscal constraints and desired training outcomes …

The Influence Of Interfacial Effects By Pvdf On The Fluorescent Properties Of Rhodamine 6g, Mona Abdulmuti Alhasani Jan 2017

The Influence Of Interfacial Effects By Pvdf On The Fluorescent Properties Of Rhodamine 6g, Mona Abdulmuti Alhasani

Open Access Dissertations

In Chapter 1, Fluorescent enhancements have been achieved using a simple layered structure: fluorophore, polymer/metal ion, glass substrate. The polymer/metal ion layer apparently has a strong influence on the emission response of the fluorophore by removing the dye aggregation. This data supports that the addition of higher concentration of hydrated transition metal salt increases the production of β-phase in the Polyvinylidene Difluoride (PVDF). The absorption spectra intensity increased as the amount of Zn2+ is increased in the substrate while the Rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) thickness is kept constant. Investigation into the means of β-phase production and the influence of the …

A Sliding Scale: Nuclear Proliferation Among States, Jessica Lui Jan 2017

A Sliding Scale: Nuclear Proliferation Among States, Jessica Lui

UReCA: The NCHC Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity

Why do states engage in nuclear proliferation? Nuclear proliferation is a major security issue affecting the international arena. Existing studies debate both the strength and direction of determinants of nuclear proliferation and the effect of domestic and international circumstances on proliferation. A clear understanding of why states choose to pursue nuclear arms is critical to promoting and maintaining international security. By analyzing what factors may make a state less prone to proliferation, the international community may incentivize disarmament. My research question considers membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as a potential correlate of nuclear proliferation. Are countries that …

Civil Engagement In Argentina After The Last Dictatorship, Emily Hoffer Jan 2017

Civil Engagement In Argentina After The Last Dictatorship, Emily Hoffer

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

How has the legacy of the Argentine dictatorship affected civil engagement? This study helps understand I) dilemmas of an authoritarian regime's transition to democracy; 2) changes in the form of civic engagement, from conventional political participation to social movements; and 3) how civic engagement is influenced by the narratives and symbols that create historical memory. I will compare Argentina with similar political experiences of democratization and new social movements in Latin America since the late 1980s.

Towards A Multilingual And Cross-Cultured Officer Corps: A Study Of Language And Culture Training Programs For Army Rotc Cadets, Elizabeth Marie Blowers

Theses - ALL

This thesis serves to substantiate the critical importance of language and cultural training for our nation’s military leaders, particularly those in the U.S. Army, in the ever-changing global security environment. Beginning with an overview of the inseparable relationship between language, culture, and society, the first chapter introduces this study surrounding two Army Reserve Officer Training Corps training programs that focus their attention on developing leaders capable of transcending linguistic and cultural boundaries. The second chapter presents a case study of post 9/11 military operational deficiencies in Afghanistan and Iraq, and delves into current Department of Defense (DoD) and Army policy …
