Nanoweapons, Louis A. Del Monte Jan 2017

Nanoweapons, Louis A. Del Monte

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Nanoweapons just might render humanity extinct in the near future—a notion that is frightening and shocking but potentially true. In Nanoweapons Louis A. Del Monte describes the most deadly generation of military weapons the world has ever encountered. With dimensions one-thousandth the diameter of a single strand of human hair, this technology threatens to eradicate humanity as it incites world governments to compete in the deadliest arms race ever.

In his insightful and prescient account of this risky and radical technology, Del Monte predicts that nanoweapons will dominate the battlefield of the future and will help determine the superpowers of …

Tough Sell, Tom Basile Jan 2017

Tough Sell, Tom Basile

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Like the War on Terror, the Media War rages on. More than ever, America’s ability to fight and win against ISIS requires that we understand how best to communicate about war in the digital age. Tom Basile takes readers behind the scenes during his time as a civilian advisor in Iraq during the Iraq War, describing his mission and the struggle to communicate about the war as it became more deadly and less popular at home.

The U.S.-led coalition wasn’t merely engaged in a fight to build a more tolerant, participatory society against incredible odds. It was also in a …

The Struggle For Iraq, Thomas M. Renahan Jan 2017

The Struggle For Iraq, Thomas M. Renahan

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

The Struggle for Iraq is a vivid personal account of the Iraqi people’s fight for democracy and justice by an American political scientist. Thomas M. Renahan arrived in southern Iraq just three days before the capture of Saddam Hussein in 2003. Later he worked in Baghdad through the dark days of the country’s sectarian violence and then in Iraqi Kurdistan. One of the few Americans to serve in all three major regions of Iraq, he spearheaded projects to develop democratic institutions, promote democracy and elections, and fight corruption.

With inside accounts of two USAID projects and of a Kurdish government …

An Investigation Of The Mechanism Of Traumatic Brain Injury Caused By Blast In The Open Field, Ke Feng Jan 2017

An Investigation Of The Mechanism Of Traumatic Brain Injury Caused By Blast In The Open Field, Ke Feng

Wayne State University Dissertations

Blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a signature wound of modern warfare. The current incomplete understanding of its injury mechanism impedes the development of strategies for effective protection of bTBI. Despite a considerable amount of experimental animal studies focused on the evaluation of brain neurotrauma caused by blast exposure, there is very limited knowledge on the biomechanical responses of the gyrenecephalic brain subjected to primary free-field blast waves imposed in vivo, and the correlation analysis between the biomechanical responses and its injury outcomes. Such information is crucial to the development of injury criteria of bTBI.

This study aims to evaluate …

Synthesis Of Netilmicin And Apramycin Derivatives For The Treatment Of Multidrug-Resistant Infectious Diseases, Amr Sayed Motawi Sonousi Jan 2017

Synthesis Of Netilmicin And Apramycin Derivatives For The Treatment Of Multidrug-Resistant Infectious Diseases, Amr Sayed Motawi Sonousi

Wayne State University Dissertations

The ever-growing bacterial resistance to existing antibiotics is alarming to humanity. Many researchers decided to revisit aminoglycosides with renewed emphasis on chemical modification as they have long been used as highly potent antibiotics for treating severe bacterial infections. The bactericidal effect of aminoglycosides is mainly due to protein synthesis inhibition by binding to the A-site of the bacterial ribosomes. However, the high potency and the broad spectrum of aminoglycosides has been outweighed by their side effects, especially ototoxicity, and by the resistance of pathogens. The goal of this research was the modification of existing aminoglycosides to develop derivatives which are …

Trying On Trade Dress: Using Trade Dress To Protect The Look And Feel Of Video Games, 17 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 109 (2017), Benjamin Lockyer

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

With the creation of video games for smart phones, video games are some of the most accessible forms of entertainment on the market. What was once only an attraction inside the designated location of arcade halls, is now within the grip of nearly every smart phone user. With new game apps for smart phones going viral on a regular basis, the video game industry has become one of the most profitable in the entertainment realm. However, the industry's overall success has also led to increased competition amongst game developers. As a result, competing developers create near exact copies of highly …

“Moulder[Ing] Into Nothingness Among The Rocks”: Sharpshooters In Gardner’S Photographic Sketch Book Of The Civil War, Harrison Dietzman Jan 2017

“Moulder[Ing] Into Nothingness Among The Rocks”: Sharpshooters In Gardner’S Photographic Sketch Book Of The Civil War, Harrison Dietzman

Faculty Publications - Department of English

During the American Civil War, sharpshooters were contested igures in the Northern media. Magazines published romanticized proiles of Union snipers, while simultaneously worrying about the deadliness of Confederate sharpshooters. Years after the war, in 1896, the aging painter Winslow Homer wrote that the sharpshooters’ task was as “near to murder as anything I ever could think of in connection with the army.” Accompanying this sentiment, Homer sketched, in the letter, a soldier trapped within the crosshairs of a sniper’s scope. I use this sketch, along with Homer’s words to his friend, as a way to understand the signiicance of two …

Apostate Religion In The Book Of Mormon, A Keith Thompson Jan 2017

Apostate Religion In The Book Of Mormon, A Keith Thompson

Law Papers and Journal Articles

Nephite missionaries in the first century BC had significant difficulty preaching the gospel among Nephites and Lamanites who followed Zoramite and Nehorite teaching. Both of these groups built synagogues and other places of worship suggesting that some of their beliefs originated in Israelite practice, but both denied the coming or the necessity of a Messiah. This article explores the nature of Zoramite and Nehorite beliefs, identifies how their beliefs and practices differed from orthodox Nephite teaching, and suggests that some of these religious differences are attributable to cultural and political differences that resonate in the present.

Experiencing Battle In The Book Of Mormon, Morgan Deane Jan 2017

Experiencing Battle In The Book Of Mormon, Morgan Deane

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Historical chronicles of military conflict normally focus on the decisions and perspectives of leaders. But new methodologies, pioneered by John Keegan’s Face of Battle, have focused attention on the battle experience of the common soldier. Applying this methodology to a careful reading of details within the Book of Mormon shows an experience in battle that is just as horrific as it is authentic.

The Interaction Of Moringa (Moringa Oleifera Lam.) Seed Extracts And Microbes, Tam Huynh Jan 2017

The Interaction Of Moringa (Moringa Oleifera Lam.) Seed Extracts And Microbes, Tam Huynh

Theses & ETDs

Plants interact with the environment through chemicals known as secondary metabolites. With the advent of modern chemical technologies, mankind learned to extract these secondary metabolites and use them for developing new drugs. Through an investigation of the interaction between plant extracts and bacteria using Moringa oleifera seed extracts and the bacteria Staphylococcus epidermis, Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus as a representative model, we not only increase our understanding of plant-bacteria relationships, but also potentially lay a foundation for the development of new drugs. The results showed that the Moringa extracts have an idiosyncratic interaction for each species of bacteria: inhibitive …

The Mos And Mos Maiorum In Late Republican Rome, Kevin Cigala Jan 2017

The Mos And Mos Maiorum In Late Republican Rome, Kevin Cigala

Theses & ETDs

Of vital importance to the culture and history of the Roman Republic are the terms mos and mos maiorum. In order to effectively reconstruct the unique political structures and culture that existed in Republican Rome, an attempt must be made to understand the practical nuances to Republican culture and use what can be lifted from that interpretation to better understand its history. This thesis proposes to use mos and mos maiorum as cultural lens with which the hidden histories and veiled intentions of the Republic are revealed. Chapter 1 is concerned with the most visible section of Roman society, aristocratic …

Theoretical Approach Towards A Greener Synthesis Of Macrocyclic Ligands For Iron Based Oxidation Catalysts, Eric Stephens Jan 2017

Theoretical Approach Towards A Greener Synthesis Of Macrocyclic Ligands For Iron Based Oxidation Catalysts, Eric Stephens

Theses & ETDs

Iron tetra-amido macrocyclic ligand (TAML) complexes are a class of biomimetic catalytic oxidants whose design and function embody the principles of green chemistry. This study develops a computational method to geometrically optimize a number of these structures – used to generate and select possible TAML conformers. A target structure was selected, and a synthetic scheme was constructed in an effort to produce the structure with less waste and derivatives than conventional methods. The computational model yielded accurate results for existing class of TAMLs, the best conformers were those that have been extensively characterized by Dr. Terrence J Collins. The synthetic …

Constructing A Digital Elevation Model Of The Lower Maumee River, Connor Geis Jan 2017

Constructing A Digital Elevation Model Of The Lower Maumee River, Connor Geis

Theses & ETDs

High-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs), especially those that include both topography and bathymetry, have proven to be an invaluable resource for scientific applications in various areas of research, particularly the fields of ecology and water chemistry. The importance of coastal environments and ecosystems located near the terrestrial/aquatic interface are widely recognized but often, topographic and bathymetric data are collected independently for different purposes, making it difficult to use the data together. This project focuses on sourcing and processing the best publically available topographic and bathymetric data, in an effort to create a topographic/bathymetric digital elevation model of the Lower Maumee …

In Search Of A Modern, Chinese Theater: The Politics Of Performance In The Twentieth Century, Samantha Sanford Jan 2017

In Search Of A Modern, Chinese Theater: The Politics Of Performance In The Twentieth Century, Samantha Sanford

Theses & ETDs

This thesis looks at the development of modern Chinese theater in the twentieth-century, both as a theatrical genre and a literary historiographical category. By moving chronologically through various theatrical reform attempts by intellectuals across the political spectrum, this thesis discusses the politicization of Chinese theater, the development of hybrid mixtures of Chinese and European theater, and the creation of historiographical periods and categories. Additionally, discussing what is and is not considered a “modern” genre of theater dissects the modernity in twentieth-century Chinese culture as a post-colonial notion. After Western theater entered the Chinese consciousness in the mid-nineteenth century, Chinese dramatists …

Terror And Territory: A Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Isil, Robert Riley Strider

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), alternatively the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), is one of many non-state organizations that resulted from the extensive foreign intervention in the Middle East leading up to current conflicts there. Like the wider network that it used to be part of, ISIL is considered to be a great threat to modern first world countries. Using data from the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), this paper analyzed the relationship between the amount of territory ISIL held from June 2014 to December 2015 and the attacks it carried out in that time, …

Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms In Pathological Gambling: Potential Evidence Of Anti-Reward Processes, Cheryl L. Green, Ramzi W. Nahhas, Arielle A. Scoglio, Igor Elman

Population and Public Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Excessive gambling is considered to be a part of the addiction spectrum. Stress-like emotional states are a key feature both of pathological gambling (PG) and of substance addiction. In substance addiction, stress symptomatology has been attributed in part to "anti-reward" allostatic neuroadaptations, while a potential involvement of anti-reward processes in the course of PG has not yet been investigated. Methods: To that end, individuals with PG (n = 22) and mentally healthy subjects (n = 13) were assessed for trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress symptomatology (PTSS) using the Life Events Checklist and the Civilian Mississippi Scale, respectively. Results: In …

American University Law Review

On September 22, 2016, Yahoo! Inc. ("Yahoo") announced that a data breach and theft of information from over 500 million user accounts had taken place during 2014, marking the largest data breach ever at the time. The information stolen likely included names, birthdays, telephone numbers, email addresses, hashed passwords, and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers. Yahoo further disclosed its belief that the stolen data "did not include unprotected passwords, payment card data, or bank account information." Just two months before Yahoo disclosed its 2014 data breach, it announced a proposed sale of the company's core …
