The Apocalyptic Imagination And The Fundamentalist Mindset, Charles B. Strozier
The Apocalyptic Imagination And The Fundamentalist Mindset, Charles B. Strozier
New England Journal of Public Policy
This article explores the psychological meanings of the apocalyptic imagination in what I call a fundamentalist mindset. That mindset has its own long history but is newly relevant in the nuclear age. We no longer need God to bring about ultimate destruction. There are many facets of the fundamentalist mindset (for example, its intense literalism), but the focus in the article is on two: its kairotic sense of time and its rampant paranoia. These two facets interact synergistically around violence that is experienced by those who revel in it as moral in a totalistic sense. Killing becomes healing. The evil …
Suicide Terrorism: Performance Violence As Public Plunge, Gregory Saathoff
Suicide Terrorism: Performance Violence As Public Plunge, Gregory Saathoff
New England Journal of Public Policy
This article explores the relationship between the social psychology of the individual and the final abyss of suicide terrorism. The boy on the high dive is a metaphor for the fearful pause before the leap. For a young child, the dive is exciting and dangerous: the fearful pause is somewhat analogous to thoughts and feelings before the terrorist’s catastrophically destructive contemplated homicidal/suicidal behavior. If we think about the leap itself, there may be a better analogy. Is there any corollary to a specific group of suicide completers? What can be learned from others who have contemplated and undertaken perhaps the …
Why We Have The Center For The Resolution Of Intractable Conflict In Oxford, John, Lord Alderdice
Why We Have The Center For The Resolution Of Intractable Conflict In Oxford, John, Lord Alderdice
New England Journal of Public Policy
The Center for the Resolution of Intractable Conflict (CRIC) was formally established at Harris Manchester College by a decision of the Governing Body of the College in 2013 to facilitate research, teaching and training, seminars and conferences, and direct engagement in situations of political violence and long-standing community conflict in various parts of the world.
The CRIC is a very young institution, but already it is having an impact out of proportion to its size and modest resources. This is because the issues we are addressing have a heightened public profile and also because of the quality and leading-edge of …
A Policy-Oriented Framework For Understanding Violent Extremism, Wael Haddara
A Policy-Oriented Framework For Understanding Violent Extremism, Wael Haddara
New England Journal of Public Policy
Violent extremism represents a serious challenge to open and democratic societies. This article presents a framework for understanding violent extremism in the context of “lone-wolf” attacks in Western societies. The framework combines social, political, and psychological factors and highlights the importance of integrating the available evidence from multiple disciplines to develop cogent, effective policy. Specifically, in addition to a broad survey of motivational factors, the article draws on terror management theory to provide insight into the interaction between religiosity and violence.
Counterextremism programs are most successful at mitigating the risk of violence when they are focused on behavior, rather than …
Geographies Of Absence: Radicalization And The Shaping Of The New Syrian Territoriality, Omar Abdulaziz Hallaj
Geographies Of Absence: Radicalization And The Shaping Of The New Syrian Territoriality, Omar Abdulaziz Hallaj
New England Journal of Public Policy
In November 2015, the United States and the Russian Federation convened the main international stakeholders engaged in the Syrian conflict to broker the Vienna Accords. The unfolding political process culminated in the issuing of UN Security Council Resolution 2254. Since then the situation has evolved rapidly, ushering in a new outlook for the resolution of the six-year-old civil war. The conflicting parties in Syria have not yet fathomed the momentum of this deal. Some progress has been made as part of successive attempts to establish a “cessation of hostilities,” but there have not yet been any major breakthroughs because the …
Frankenstein: The United States In Afghanistan During The 1980s And 1990s, Michael R. Szymanski
Frankenstein: The United States In Afghanistan During The 1980s And 1990s, Michael R. Szymanski
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
For nearly the past quarter century, the United States has been involved in covert operations in a region of the world that most people could not locate on a map. Invisible wars being fought by the United States and other foreign intelligence agencies in Afghanistan sowed the seeds for the attacks on September 11, 2001. From the Soviet invasion in 1979 to the summer of 2001, intelligence agencies from around the globe have had a stake in supplying, training, and funding the very same people who carried out those terrible attacks. In the middle of this chaotic time period, Osama …
Redefining Legitimate Authority: Just War In The Era Of Terrorism, Christopher D. Mercado
Redefining Legitimate Authority: Just War In The Era Of Terrorism, Christopher D. Mercado
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
Recent attempts by political philosophers to determine if terrorism can be morally justified have analyzed terrorist groups from a just-war perspective; however, many times, these philosophers have subordinated the principle of legitimate authority to the other just-war principles or have neglected legitimate authority outright. Thus, the issue of who decides when, under what circumstances, and how to make war has been relegated to a secondary interest behind the issue of how war is made. This article fills the resulting hole in contemporary just-war literature by reevaluating the principle of legitimate authority. A proper, up-to-date definition of legitimate authority is here …
Confederate Raider...Criminal...Hero: Captain Jake Bennett’S Civil War, Randy Mills
Confederate Raider...Criminal...Hero: Captain Jake Bennett’S Civil War, Randy Mills
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
The story of how irregular warfare during the Civil War played out in border regions has been unevenly told. There exists a relatively large body of scholarly work, for example, on irregular Civil War activities in the border areas of Missouri and Arkansas and, more recently, in eastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia. Other areas besides these, however, also witnessed intense and brutal partisan fighting. These other locations have received little attention from historians. A case in point concerns the fierce irregular warfare that took place in western Kentucky and the forgotten story of guerilla fighter Captain Jake Bennett.
The Turk And The Yankee: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Between Turkish And American Managers, Heather Halub, Allison Sauber, James Stück
The Turk And The Yankee: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Between Turkish And American Managers, Heather Halub, Allison Sauber, James Stück
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
With Turkey’s developing role as a lead nation among emerging markets, the field of cross-cultural management becomes a key contributor to the interactions between Turkish and American professionals in the workplace. This study uses models of national cultural differences based primarily on the findings of Hofstede (1984), but it also incorporates those of Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner (1998) and the GLOBE project (2002), resulting in a comparative cross-cultural management analysis. In combining both academic theory and actual international experience, this paper illustrates that, through effective cross-cultural management, profound understanding and harmony can exist between international managers.
Colonial Dreams, Ambiguous Outcomes: German Settlers In The Balkans And The Volga River Basin, Timothy Olin
Colonial Dreams, Ambiguous Outcomes: German Settlers In The Balkans And The Volga River Basin, Timothy Olin
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
This article surveys the phenomenon of German colonization in Eastern Europe from a comparative perspective. On examination of the origins and outcomes of German settlement in the northern Balkans and southern Russia, a number of shared characteristics and circumstances appear. From beginnings in multinational empires to dissolution under the combined pressure of nationalism and communism, the German settler communities represent an interesting case study in the shift from an imperial to a national perspective in Eastern Europe. The Germans were successful in fulfilling the goals of the Russian and Habsburg imperial governments; they increased agricultural production and helped integrate the …

National And International Indices Of Well-Being: A Critical Analysis, Donna Mclean
National And International Indices Of Well-Being: A Critical Analysis, Donna Mclean
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
Over the past decade, increasing effort has been made to develop both national and global indices of well-being. Much like earlier sustainability indices directed at questions of economics and environment, well-being metrics seek to chart the quality of life of citizens in order to (1) support administrative decision making and policy formation, (2) encourage consensus building and public participation in defining what’s important, (3) educate and advocate, and (4) facilitate research through data collection and analysis. This paper explores a number of indices of well-being, including the Canadian Index of Well-being, the OECD Your Better Life Index, and the Happy …

Transforming Conflict: A Grounded Theory Study Of Six Behavior Domains Of Leaders In Five Different Fields, Scott A. Dick
Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of this grounded theory research consisting of five collective phenomenological studies was to generate a theory that explains how exemplar leaders from five different fields use six domains of conflict transformation behaviors to establish common ground and produce breakthrough results. The six domains of behavior are communication, collaboration, ethics, emotional intelligence, problem solving, and process. Methodology: The sample was composed of 75 exemplar leaders from five different professional fields and included an analysis of over 1,300 pages of interview transcripts as the main data source for the study. Findings: The results found that exemplar leaders establish, build, …

Indian And Chinese Engagement In Latin America And The Caribbean: A Comparative Assessment, R. Evan Ellis Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
This monograph comparatively examines the content and country focus of high-level diplomacy for each of the two actors, as well as the volume and patterns of trade, the activities of Indian and Chinese companies in the region, and their relationship to their respective governments in eight sectors: (1) petroleum and mining; (2) agriculture; (3) construction; (4) manufacturing and retail; (5) banking and finance; (6) logistics and port operations; (7) technology such as telecommunications, space, and high technology; and, (8) military sales and activities. This monograph finds that Indian engagement with the region is significantly less than that of the People’s …
Marijuana Regulation And Federalism, John M. Greabe
Marijuana Regulation And Federalism, John M. Greabe
Law Faculty Scholarship
[Excerpt] "Federal law makes the cultivation and use of marijuana illegal for all purposes. Yet, over the past two decades, 28 states plus the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes, and eight states plus the District of Columbia have legalized it for recreational purposes. Marijuana regulation thus provides a useful and timely example for exploring the ways in which the distribution of power between the federal government and the states can facilitate policy change."
1967 - California Ranchos And Farms; 1846-1862, Including The Letters: Of John Quincy Adams Warren Of 1861, Being Largely Devoted To Livestock, Wheat Farming, Fruit Raising And The Wine Industry, Paul W. Gates.
Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
Published in 1967, the book, containing letters of John Quincy Adams Warren, was edited by Paul W. Gates who describes the importance of early agriculture in California. Gates writes about the complications created by the Mexican land grants and the beginning development of irrigation. He examines the early American period of California husbandry and beginnings of commercial farming. Gates provides detailed information concerning California ranchos and farms, summarizing livestock, grain, fruit and wine industries during the 1850s. The 1861 John Quincy Adams Warren letters included in the book were written by Warren throughout his travels in Southern California, the Bay …
Homeowner Preferences After September 11th, A Microdata, Adam Nowak
Homeowner Preferences After September 11th, A Microdata, Adam Nowak
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
The existence of homeowner preferences - specifically homeowners' preferences for neighbors - is fundamental to economic models of sorting. This paper investigates whether or not the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 (9/11) impacted on local preferences for Arab neighbors. We test for changes in preferences using a differences-in-differences framework in a hedonic pricing model. Relative to sales before 9/11, we find properties within 0.1 miles of an Arab homeowner sold at a 1.5% discount in the 180 days after 9/11. The results are robust to a number of specifications including time horizon, event date, distance, alternative ethnic groups, and …

Affective Terrains: Art, War, And National Belonging, Susan Cahill
Affective Terrains: Art, War, And National Belonging, Susan Cahill
Canadian Military History
This paper examines how cultural representations affirm national belonging within the context of Canada’s involvement in the War on Terror. To do this, it takes as its central case study an exhibition of official war art, 11 Artists for 11/11 (2012), which was mounted on public display in celebration of Remembrance Day. This paper approaches the exhibition and the works included in it by addressing their representative and non-representative (or affective) qualities, in order to think through the ways in which visual narratives of military history participate in shaping sentimental attachments to Canadian identity and being Canadian.
