The Ironclad Economy, Ryan Thomas
The Ironclad Economy, Ryan Thomas
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
This paper investigates and describes the Confederate navy’s attempt to establish a naval presence in New Orleans. At the forefront of the Civil War, the Confederate States were pressed to create and sustain a working military presence within an evolving economy. The Southern economy was about to be ravished by the Union’s blockade. Both the Union and the Confederacy knew that establishing an early presence on the water would be of the greatest importance, of which the Union had a considerably large head start on the nonexistent Confederate navy. This paper covers the birth of the Confederate navy in an …

Beauty, Real Or Apparent: Christian Kings, Muslim Artisans, And The Development Of An Imperial Image Through The Silk And Horticulture Industries In Sicily. (Ca. 1090-1190), Casey K. Brown
History ETDs
In the wake of the Norman conquest of Sicily in the second half of the eleventh century, the Mediterranean island housed a diverse collection of Greek, Latin, and Muslim communities. Norman kings chose Palermo to become the seat of Latin-Christian Sicilian government for its productivity and strategic location and included the island into the complex world of self-fashioning politics and exchange. For Sicilian and ‘foreign’ Muslims alike, the imperious pose Roger II and his successors held created a precarious balancing act between the real and imagined worlds of Sicily. The content of this thesis is primarily concerned with the impact …

An Optimized Machine Learning And Big Data Approach To Crime Detection, Ashokkumar Palanivinayagam, Siva Shankar Gopal, Sweta Bhattacharya, Noble Anumbe, Ebuka Ibeke, Cresantus Biamba
Faculty Publications
Crime detection is one of the most important research applications in machine learning. Identifying and reducing crime rates is crucial to developing a healthy society. Big Data techniques are applied to collect and analyse data: determine the required features and prime attributes that cause the emergence of crime hotspots. The traditional crime detection and machine learning-based algorithms lack the ability to generate key prime attributes from the crime dataset, hence most often fail to predict crime patterns successfully. This paper is aimed at extracting the prime attributes such as time zones, crime probability, and crime hotspots and performing vulnerability analysis …

Spanish Fisheries Of Charlotte Harbor, E. A. Hammond
Spanish Fisheries Of Charlotte Harbor, E. A. Hammond
Florida Historical Quarterly
The fishermen from Cuba and other Spanish colonial settlements who had first sailed their smacks into the waters of Charlotte Harbor and Tampa Bay recognized that the bays, inlets, and rivers of the area abounded in edible fish and green turtle ready to be taken with minimal risk and perhaps even with substantial profit. The organic content of these waters provided ideal feeding haunts for many species for which there would be convenient markets. It may be reasonably assumed that commercial fishing, at least on a small scale, was carried on there in the latter part of the seventeenth and …

Black Slaves, Red Masters, White Middlemen: A Congressional Debate Of 1852, James E. Sefton
Black Slaves, Red Masters, White Middlemen: A Congressional Debate Of 1852, James E. Sefton
Florida Historical Quarterly
A list of the most noteworthy congressional debates over slavery would include those on the Compromises of 1820 and 1850, the Gag Rule, the slave trade, and the Kansas-Nebraska Bill, among others. Sometimes, however, debate on a comparatively minor episode of a large issue can be highly illuminating. In the spring of 1852, the House of Representatives devoted perhaps ten hours to a bill which brought to a close a bizzare story that had begun sixteen years earlier during federal efforts to remove the Seminole Indians from Florida. Ever since the United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1819, white …

Toward A Useful Synthesis Of Deweyan Pragmatism And Music Education, Illkay Ebru Tuncer Boon
Visions of Research in Music Education
The purpose of this work is to explore the possibility of incorporating pragmatism into music education. The paper discusses John Dewey’s pragmatism and analyzes the interpretations and influences of Deweyan pragmatism in music education with the help of interview responses of scholars worldwide. Finally, it seeks specific answers as to how Deweyan pragmatism can help the transformation of music education, particularly of music teacher education. The historical information was obtained through a close analysis and reviewing of Dewey’s writings, as well as other educational scholars’ writings on Dewey’s pragmatism. After gaining a personal insight and understanding how much Dewey’s pragmatism …

A Moral Framework For Commons-Based Geoengineering, Lisa L. Ferrari, Elizabeth L. Chalecki
A Moral Framework For Commons-Based Geoengineering, Lisa L. Ferrari, Elizabeth L. Chalecki
Political Science Faculty Publications
As climate conditions worsen and mitigation efforts continue to fall short, the likelihood increases that States or other international actors will look to geoengineering technologies for a remedy. The most basic of these methods, such as planting trees or sequestering carbon underground, can take place within sovereign territory. However, there are also many types of geoengineering that could be deployed in the global commons. This means that their impact would clearly be felt beyond one specific State or region, and, with certain approaches, such as stratospheric aerosol injection, likely worldwide. These commons-based geoengineering (CBG) technologies are largely untested and, in …

What The Shell? The Zooarchaeology Of Cerro San Isidro, Peru, Monica Fenton
What The Shell? The Zooarchaeology Of Cerro San Isidro, Peru, Monica Fenton
LSU Master's Theses
Zooarchaeologists have documented the importance of marine resources in the ancient Andes, and the first field season at Cerro San Isidro (Ancash, Peru) proves no different. The multi- component hilltop archaeological complex lies in the agriculturally rich Moro Pocket of the middle Nepeña Valley, at least an eight-hour walk from the ocean on the north-central coast. Between June and August 2019, members of the Proyecto de Investigación Arqueológica Cerro San Isidro carried out the first scientific excavations at this important ancient human settlement. Block excavations focused on a hypothesized elite compound, documenting intermittent occupations from the Late Formative (c. 600 …

Triumph Of The Commons: Sustainable Community Practices On Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Robert J. Dinapoli, Carl P. Lipo, Terry L. Hunt
Anthropology Faculty Scholarship
The history of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) has long been framed as a parable for how societies can fail catastrophically due to the selfish actions of individuals and a failure to wisely manage common-pool resources. While originating in the interpretations made by 18th-century visitors to the island, 20th-century scholars recast this narrative as a “tragedy of the commons,” assuming that past populations were unsustainable and selfishly overexploited the limited resources on the island. This narrative, however, is now at odds with a range of archaeological, ethnohistoric, and environmental evidence. Here, we argue that while Rapa Nui did experience large-scale deforestation …
Orphaned Landscapes: Violence, Visuality, And Appearance In Indonesia, Patricia Spyer
Orphaned Landscapes: Violence, Visuality, And Appearance In Indonesia, Patricia Spyer
Art & Visual Culture
Less than a year after the end of authoritarian rule in 1998, huge images of Jesus Christ and other Christian scenes proliferated on walls and billboards around a provincial town in eastern Indonesia where conflict had arisen between Muslims and Christians. A manifestation of the extreme perception that emerged amid uncertainty and the challenge to seeing brought on by urban warfare, the street paintings erected by Protestant motorbike-taxi drivers signaled a radical departure from the aniconic tradition of the old colonial church, a desire to be seen and recognized by political authorities from Jakarta to the UN and European Union, …

Cetacean Acousticwelfare In Wild And Managed-Care Settings: Gaps And Opportunities, Paige E. Stevens, Heather Hill, Jason N. Bruck
Faculty Publications
Cetaceans are potentially at risk of poor welfare due to the animals’ natural reliance on sound and the persistent nature of anthropogenic noise, especially in the wild. Industrial, commercial, and recreational human activity has expanded across the seas, resulting in a propagation of sound with varying frequency characteristics. In many countries, current regulations are based on the potential to induce hearing loss; however, a more nuanced approach is needed when shaping regulations, due to other non-hearing loss effects including activation of the stress response, acoustic masking, frequency shifts, alterations in behavior, and decreased foraging. Cetaceans in managedcare settings share the …
