The Identity Crisis In China’S National Drama: Vilification And Erasure Of The Homosexuality Of The Dan In Peking Opera, 1910–45, Xiaoyao Lu
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
The homosexuality of male dan actors — female impersonators — in the renowned Peking Opera has long been the subject of tabloid speculation and intellectual criticism since the 19th century, and yet little is said about it in modern-day China. While scholars have ascribed the cause of this change in perceptions of dan homosexuality to events of 1910–20s, including the work of Mei Lanfang, domestic political and economic change, and Japanese influence, I argue that Western and Soviet influence spanning from 1910–45 was the driving factor behind the vilification and heterosexualisation of dan actors.
I show the absence of homophobic …
From Stage To Screen: The Enduring Influence Of Commedia Dell'arte., Corinna Di Niro
From Stage To Screen: The Enduring Influence Of Commedia Dell'arte., Corinna Di Niro
Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai
This presentation discusses how the principles of Commedia dell’Arte (henceforth Commedia), a vibrant 16th century Italian theatre form, have seamlessly transitioned into film, leaving an enduring impact on the silver screen.
During the silent film era, renowned stars Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton showcased Commedia through their exaggerated physicality and gestures, inspired by iconic characters such as Arlecchino and Pierrot. The frantic pace and chaotic energy in Keystone comedies also echoed the Commedia spirit, with improvisation and slapstick the key to provoking laughter (Scheide, 2012).
The popularity of 'Rom-Coms' overtime can be attributed to its use of Commedia's archetypal characters, …

Una Casa Para Una: Construyendo Identidades Políticas Y Bilingüismo En A House Of My Own: Stories From My Life De Sandra Cisneros, Vanessa M. Lent
Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture

The Storytelling Study: Understanding Ourselves And Others Through Storytelling, Georgia Moses
The Storytelling Study: Understanding Ourselves And Others Through Storytelling, Georgia Moses
Graduate Student Independent Studies
Study on oral storytelling in early childhood education is ample. Study on oral storytelling in the elementary grades, however, is limited. This is likely due to the connection between storytelling and dramatic play, a creative and imaginative exercise that loses value in many classrooms as children grow. The emergent themes across the developmental stages of seven, eight, and nine year olds illustrate the need for and power of storytelling in second and third grade classrooms. The Storytelling Study is an interdisciplinary, multimodal curriculum in which children foster deeper understandings of themselves and others through the exploration of oral storytelling. The …

Creating And Delivering Audio Descriptions For Videos, Rosiana Natalie
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Despite anti-discrimination regulations mandating the provision of audio descriptions (ADs), the majority of online video content remains inaccessible to blind and low-vision (BLV) individuals. This is because these ADs are either absent or fail to adequately address the diverse and unique needs of the audience. Traditionally, content creators have relied on professionals to author ADs. However, this gold standard may not be accessible for some content creators because this method is still costly and has a long turnaround time. Moreover, when ADs are available, they tend to be static and unalterable, failing to cater to the unique preferences of BLV …

In this thesis I will document and explore my process from researching the show to putting it on stage. Theatre is different from concert lighting which I have experience in but lighting in a theatre capacity is still new and through every show I was able to learn something new. Through this program I have learned how to successfully take a script from the paperwork to the stage.

Improving Students’ Sense Of Belonging At School: A School Improvement Plan, Madison Alvarado
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Robust research proves the importance of students' sense of belonging at school and its correlation to academic achievement, positive behavior choices, and a student's overall well-being. This school improvement plan was created to implement strategies that will lead to a significant increase in students' sense of belonging at school. The plan includes incorporating professional development that provides educators with a well-rounded understanding of what a sense of belonging entails, along with structures to help increase it in the students they support. The plan also introduces a student program designed to boost students' positive interactions and, thus, increase their sense of …

Teachers' And School Directors' Perceptions Of The Benefits Of Arts-Integrated Instruction K-2: Before, During, And After Covid-19, Alison H. Mehler
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences and perceptions of teachers who use arts-integrated instruction and their directors of K-2 students before, during, and after the unique period of online instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic, which began in March of 2020. Arts integration is a method of teaching in which students are taught comprehension of subject areas (i.e. – math, science, reading, social studies) through art forms. These art forms include music, theatre, dance, art, and writing. I collected he qualitative data for this research through virtual interviews with five female participants. I transcribed these interviews and …

The Blessed Assembly: Irreplaceable Physical Co-Presence In Worship And Healthy Hybridity Reimagined After The Pandemic In The Digital Age, Yvette, Ying Wai Lau
Doctor of Pastoral Music Projects and Theses
Because of the unprecedented and unexpected force of the pandemic since 2020, most churches around the world have experienced some online worship during the lockdown of their cities or the mandated closure of the church buildings. For many people, online worship seems to be an equivalent, if not better, alternative for gathering together—a physical co-presence in worship—even after the pandemic has ended. As necessary and vital as online worship experiences have been for Christians during the pandemic, the witness of the church from Pentecost throughout Christian history indicates that gathered worship in physical spaces is irreplaceable for faith formation and …
