Creation And Covenant - A Hermeneutical Approach To The Correlation Of The Seventh-Day And The Biblical Sabbath, Sergio L. Silva Jan 2015

Creation And Covenant - A Hermeneutical Approach To The Correlation Of The Seventh-Day And The Biblical Sabbath, Sergio L. Silva

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

For centuries, scholars have debated the nature of the relationship between the seventh day (Gen 2:1-3) and the biblical Sabbath (Exod 20:8-11). While Covenant Theologians insist that the seventh day works as the theological foundation of the biblical Sabbath, New Covenant Theologians reject this relationship and insist the Sabbath is an institution given exclusively to the Israelites. This article argues that according to an exegetical-historical and theological reading of selected texts on the Sabbath, one must regard the seventh day as the theological foundation of the biblical Sabbath to sustain a consistent and coherent theological system that uses Scripture as …

Modern "Sappers And Miners": The Rehnquist And Roberts Courts And The Civil Rights Act Of 1964, Jonathan K. Stubbs

Law Faculty Publications

o orient readers on what is at stake, Section I provides a brief overview of the substantive provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Section II considers reasons why the Act was premised on Congress' Commerce Clause authority rather than the enforcement power that the Constitution confers upon Congress under the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments. Section III evaluates several recent Supreme Court decisions that give the Commerce Clause a restrictive interpretation. For illustrative purposes, this section ex- plores the impact on Title Two of the Act. Finally, the article closes with a few observations of the implications of the …

Nlrb Elections: Ambush Or Anticlimax?, Jeffrey M. Hirsch Jan 2015

Nlrb Elections: Ambush Or Anticlimax?, Jeffrey M. Hirsch

Emory Law Journal

The National Labor Relations Board¿s (NLRB) new election procedures represent a comprehensive reform of its representation process. As is the case for many broad reforms, the new rules have prompted significant criticisms and accolades. Many employers have decried the new rules as implementing an unfair ¿ambush¿ election process that will deprive employees of needed information and employers of their right to express their views about unionization. In contrast, unions have largely applauded the new rules as an improvement on an election system that they view as stacked against them. The truth appears far less monumental. Although the NLRB¿s new rules …

What Is The Relationship Between Adolescent Adjustment And Distress From Ostracism?, Taylor A. Nelson Jan 2015

What Is The Relationship Between Adolescent Adjustment And Distress From Ostracism?, Taylor A. Nelson

Honors Capstones

This investigation examined the relationship between adolescent adjustment and distress from ostracism. Specifically, it looked at whether peer victimization and maternal consulting about peer relationships moderate the relationship between adolescents' overall depression and distress from ostracism. Several questions were of interest. First, is the relationship between adolescents' overall depression and distress from ostracism moderated by maternal consulting? It was hypothesized that higher levels of overall depression in conjunction with higher levels of consulting will be related to lower levels of distress. Second, is the relationship between adolescents overall depression in distress from ostracism moderated by victimization? It was hypothesized that …

Empowerment Unit Plan For Haitian Restavek Children, Ashley Craig Jan 2015

Empowerment Unit Plan For Haitian Restavek Children, Ashley Craig

HIM 1990-2015

Restavek, French for "one who stays with", is a word used to describe child slaves in Haiti. These children are given away by their parents at a young age because of financial hardships or for hopes of life in the urban areas to be better than life in the rural areas. The Restaveks, far from their family and anyone they know, end up as slaves without access to education, healthcare, and sometimes food. As a result, many of these children suffer from malnutrition, abuse, and illnesses. The majority of Restaveks are young girls. In the communities, they are shunned and …

Classroom Projects As Embodied And Embedded Outcomes Assessment, Garnet C. Butchart, Margaret Mullan Jan 2015

Classroom Projects As Embodied And Embedded Outcomes Assessment, Garnet C. Butchart, Margaret Mullan

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

Although educators already recognize the value in engaging student learning through classroom projects and service-learning, assessment of student learning through classroom projects may be accompanied by a shift of attention from mastery of ideas to embodied knowledge. We argue that embodiment is the basic semiotic condition of being human—of being both an expressive and perceptive (communicative) being among others. Linking this philosophy of communication principle to the topic of assessment, the article offers assessment research a focus of attention on learning settings: from embodiment as learning context, to the built environment of classrooms, as well as to group interaction. We …

Accessing Shared Culture For Conflict Transformation: The Arts Of Pattani, Hilde Kvam Jan 2015

Accessing Shared Culture For Conflict Transformation: The Arts Of Pattani, Hilde Kvam

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Since 2004 antagonism between the Malay-Muslim population in the South of Thailand and ethnic Thai-Buddhist groups has escalated. The effect has been increasing acts of violence, rebellions and state of emergency. The antagonism between the two ethnic groups has been most pronounced in the Pattani region where Islam is identified as a non-Thai culture. Throughout centuries this region has been populated with peoples holding diverse religions, customs and cultural traditions who until modern times have coexisted relatively peacefully, inspired and enriched each other. In this area, arts and culture among Malays and Thais have shared roots with artistic forms and …
