Weapons Of Mass Construction: The Role Of Intellectual Property In Nigeria's Film And Music Industries, Ana Santos Rutschman Jan 2015

Weapons Of Mass Construction: The Role Of Intellectual Property In Nigeria's Film And Music Industries, Ana Santos Rutschman

Emory International Law Review

Intellectual property has influenced the recent extraordinary growth of the film and music industries in Nigeria. This growth, largely attributable to the introduction of digital technologies, has also been shaped by an intricate interplay between unbridled piracy and market-induced compliance with IP norms within the same industry. As a signatory of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, Nigeria is bound by IP protection standards applicable to both developed and emerging economies. In developing countries, this kind of legal harmonization often translates into a rigid enforcement of IP that risks stifling industrial production. Nigerian film and music industries, …

An Analysis Of The Title Role In Scapino!, Joe D. Bussey

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to serve as documentation of the performance of the title role in Scapino!. It is separated into three parts including a play analysis, a character analysis, and a summation of the rehearsal process. Each section is linked directly to the plays commedia roots, and draws a link between Moliere’s original play Les Fourberies de Scapin, and the work that resulted from the Young Vic’s production Scapino!. The conclusions that are reached serve as an informational tool for the performance of the character of Scapino.

There Are No Racists Here: The Rise Of Racial Extremism, When No One Is Racist, Jeannine Bell Jan 2015

There Are No Racists Here: The Rise Of Racial Extremism, When No One Is Racist, Jeannine Bell

Articles by Maurer Faculty

At first glance hate murders appear wholly anachronistic in post-racial America. This Article suggests otherwise. The Article begins by analyzing the periodic expansions of the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the protection for racist expression in First Amendment doctrine. The Article then contextualizes the case law by providing evidence of how the First Amendment works on the ground in two separate areas — the enforcement of hate crime law and on university campuses that enact speech codes. In these areas, those using racist expression receive full protection for their beliefs. Part III describes social spaces — social media and employment where …

Mediated Motherhood: Discourse And Maternal Identity In The Digital Age, Melissa A. Vaillancourt Jan 2015

Mediated Motherhood: Discourse And Maternal Identity In The Digital Age, Melissa A. Vaillancourt

Dissertations - ALL

The ubiquity of the smartphone is both celebrated and contested, since the possibility of constant connectivity is seen as simultaneously inviting and exciting on the one hand, and demanding and burdensome on the other. This thesis uses discourse analysis to analyze a television interview and an online comment forum to shed light on the ways in which experts and mothers talk about the impacts of technology on family interaction and parenting practices. I consider how both experts and parents discursively construct the family-technology relationship by analyzing how parents communicate about technology use (both their own and their children's), the emotional …

Revisiting The Ghosts Of Vatican Ii: Gender In Catholic Horror Cinema Of The American 60s And 70s, Currie D. Mckinley

Honors Theses

This thesis contextualizes 1960s and 1970s American horror films against the historical backdrop of Vatican II with the intent of discovering how the texts, reception, and legacies of the films could illuminate the gender politics of the various changes implemented over the course of Vatican II. The first chapter analyzes the text of Rosemary's Baby as a metaphor for restrictive policies on birth control on the part of the post-Vatican II papacy. The second chapter considers the implications of disagreements between the author and director of The Exorcist with regard to how different individuals wanted the Catholic Church to present …

Hirarc Study For Occupational Safety And Health Evaluation Of Clinical Waste Handlers At A Hospital And An Incineration Plant / Kauselya Muniandy, Kauselya Muniandy

Student Works (2010-2019)

Clinical waste poses serious threats and hazards to human health. Clinical waste, which is categorized as a scheduled waste in Malaysia, has been increasing over the years. Thus, proper clinical waste management is important as improper clinical waste handling has led to many incidents involving handlers over the years (Arab et al., 2008). However, research on hazard and risk assessment for clinical waste management has been very limited, and there is a serious dearth of information for risk control planning. This project seeks to document the hazards found during clinical waste collection and disposal practices in a healthcare establishment and …

Hands Percussion : Moving Towards A Malaysian Identity / Jotsna Nithyanandan, Jotsna Nithyanandan

Student Works (2010-2019)

This study examined the idea behind the compositions of Malaysian Chinese Shigu drumming performing group Hands Percussion (HANDS) that have incorporated Gamelan, and the Indian Tabla drumming patterns as part of their repertoire. HANDS began with the 24 Seasons Drums, when it was founded in 1997, as a Malaysian Chinese percussion ensemble. This dissertation elucidates how HANDS later forms a multi-ethnic identity in its production that moved away from a single ethnic Chinese performing art group. This study touches on issues of culture and intercultural exchanges on the premise that HANDS is based in Malaysia, a country that is pluralistic …

Both Sides Of The Mirror: How Illinois Equal Suffrage Association Combated Female Opposition And Won The Vote, Janet E. Gatz

Honors Capstones

This project attempted to find how suffragists in the Illinois Equal Suffrage Association combated opposition from the woman run Illinois Association Opposed to the Extension of Woman's Suffrage. I hoped in this thesis to shine a light on a little discussed part of Illinois history. Mainly, how suffragists combated opposition from some of the very people they were trying to help.
