Käthe Kollwitz’S Imagery Of Maternal Loss, Emma Claire Wolin

Käthe Kollwitz (1867 – 1945) created imagery of maternal loss that was a radical departure from the sentimental and tender depictions of motherhood that were common in the late nineteenth century. Kollwitz’s imagery of maternal loss is compelling for her portrayal of the suffering a mother experiences at the loss of a child. Though her imagery has its roots in the Christian tradition of the Pietà, or Mary mourning the dead Christ, Kollwitz removes it from the religious realm and suspends the mother and dead child in time and place. Shakespeare's Globe Theater in London, England is a recreation of the Globe Theater of Shakespeare's day. Through my thesis I seek to address the Globe's particular relationship with its audience, both in the physical location and online. The first chapter is spent connecting the Globe's presentation of itself and its operational definition of authenticity, as well as how the Globe seeks to relate to its audience through in-person performances. Andy Warhol’s remarkable work, the Exploding Plastic Inevitable Show (EPI), serves as an insight into the complex nature of postmodern art. It is a recursive guide, a mise en abyme, of present-day multi-media aesthetics. The show was a progenitor of postmodernist art-production and theory, and explored emerging technology’s role in mediating the sensory and intellectual relationship between art and audience. The EPI show is a conceptual schematic; through its aesthetic juxtapositions it expresses quite elegantly manifold ideas of the meaning of art, life, and culture. This paper places my feature film, The Forum in historical and cultural context. The Forum is an experiment in using Brechtian dramaturgical principals as a means of incorporating emerging media forms such as social networking and texting into film. The principles of alienation, gestus, historicization, realism and dialectics are traced through the filmography of Jean-Luc Godard in order to demonstrate a Brechtian foundation for cinema in the information age and the need for a 21st century update of his theories. Major depressive disorder is often characterized by disrupted cognitive control, a psychological symptom which can be traced to metabolic dysfunction in specific brain regions. Such biological disturbances come in the form of increased and decreased metabolism in regions which exhibit anticorrelated activity. These alterations are often seen in conjunction with regional volumetric reductions, which may be a result of neuronal and glial degradation. This paper essentially attempts to take my thesis presentation and place it square in the middle of the ongoing STEM-STEAM debate as a practical example of how the arts and the sciences are far more synergistic than many people believe them to be. This thesis analyzes and interprets Caryl Churchill's momentous play, Top Girls. It follows the story of Marlene, a 1980s business woman, and her biological daughter Angie, who has been given to the care of Marlene's sister so she could pursue a career. For three decades, the critical literature surrounding the play has been dominated by binary oppositions. Most notable are the binaries between family & career and socialism & capitalism. The initial purpose of this thesis was to provide a definition for the genres fantasy and science fiction, and to understand the ways in which these genres differ. I discovered that it is best to view these genres as “fuzzy sets,” meaning that science fiction and fantasy exist as a spectrum of fundamental elements that are commonly manifested in literary works of either kind. In this thesis, I analyze J.R.R. This thesis explores silent film comedy in conjunction with comic theory. The leading actors in these films had a lot of creative control and would portray the same character from film to film. This thesis uses the works of Mack Sennett, Charles Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Harry Langdon as its focus. Their popularity was immense, and they represent an instantly accessible, populist form of comedy. Comic theory is a sprawling, contentious discipline, and comedy itself is difficult to define. This thesis studies the nature of translation and adaptation, specifically regarding Griselda Gambaro’s Antígona Furiosa. It considers the historical, cultural and linguistic elements of translation, as well as the challenges of performance within the context of translation. The second chapter of the thesis consists of an original translation of Gambaro’s Antígona Furiosa, and the third chapter is a discussion of its performance. A copy of that performance is included on a DVD.

Dancing Out Of Bounds: The Disruptive Image Of The Tavern Dancer In The Babylonian Talmud, Katherine Renee Mullin

This thesis examines the image of the tavern dancer in two passages from the Babylonian Talmud. Using contemporaneous descriptions of dance and taverns in combination with modern scholarship of late antiquity, this thesis unpacks some of the implications of this image in the context of broader concerns in rabbinic literature of the time. Modern dance theories are used to facilitate this exploration, and generate a model for understanding rabbinic anxieties about the body of the tavern dancer. This thesis examines the notion of feminist theater in two chapters. The first chapter looks at the theater collective At the Foot of the Mountain as representative of second wave or cultural feminist theater in the United States. Through a collaborative working method and aesthetic vision informed by feminism, At the Foot of the Mountain strove to create theater as part of a uniquely “female culture.” The second chapter presents an understanding of feminist theater in response to the essentializing tendencies of cultural feminism. Scholarship and Professional Work – Education

Applied theatre and youth participatory action research engage students in powerful discussions on complex issues. A culturally responsive middle level teacher used applied theatre to motivate and empower academically and linguistically marginalized students and study the outcomes with the support of her university advisor. Their findings suggest that implementing strategies associated with applied theatre, youth participatory action research, and culturally responsive teaching have the potential to can help students develop new perspectives, learn to work with others, gain a sense of community, increase confidence through student voice, and obtain a greater comfort level with public speaking. Perspectives on South America: Reminiscence of the University of Dayton Global Education Seminar

The Global Education Seminar offered opportunities to faculty to experience life in another culture with hopes of returning to campus to educate colleagues and students. This article argues that travels to Argentina and Peru accomplished some of that objective. Among the educational aspects, the experience addresses the question: “what does it mean to be black in those countries?” The conclusion was revealing in several ways, and among them was that racism was displayed in different ways in different societies. Additionally, the experience helped to reinforce the differences between cultural immersion and tourism. In the end the experience enriched participants’ knowledge …

They are elements of the: scenic investiture affecting, synesthetically, light space rhythm pattern sound, but they also resound at the deepest level of the: mise-en-scene, through self time memory consciousness as well. Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

Social and communication behaviors are often a focus of instruction for individuals with autism. A theatre rehearsal and production process is challenging and joyful work that nurtures the development of social and language skills. This study evaluated and described social and language behaviors for students with autism both before and after a 10-week theatre experience. The results indicated that, when compared with a control group, the students with theatre experiences had significant and positive changes in the development of social and language skills. Most particularly, these students had significant improvement in social responsiveness, acknowledgement of the perspective of others, and …

Faculty members, as language policy implementers, retain significant control of the enactment of policy in local contexts. In order to better understand the relationship between de jure language policies at multiple levels of the policy hierarchy, in addition to faculty members? acceptance or rejection of these policies, this study investigated faculty perspectives on language policy, specifically at a southeastern university in the United States. This study employed multiple methods of research including a policy examination and a survey.
