Contradictionary Lies: A Play Not About Kurt Cobain, Katie R. Wallace
Contradictionary Lies: A Play Not About Kurt Cobain, Katie R. Wallace
ETD Archive
Contradictionary Lies: A Play Not About Kurt Cobain is a one-act play that follows failed rocker Jimbo as he deals with aging, his divorce, and disappointment. As he and his estranged wife Kelly divvy up their belongings and ultimately their memories, Jimbo is visited by his guardian angel, the ghost of dead rock star Kurt Cobain. Part dark comedy, part docudrama, this play shows how closely man emulates their heroes, and how in the void of depression, music serves an escape.
The Run Of Ourselves: Shame, Guilt And Confession In Post-Celtic Tiger Irish Media, Marcus Free, Clare Scully
The Run Of Ourselves: Shame, Guilt And Confession In Post-Celtic Tiger Irish Media, Marcus Free, Clare Scully
Articles
This article examines the emergence of the themes of shame and guilt in Irish print and broadcast media in the wake of Ireland’s 2008 economic collapse. It considers how the potential search for explanation of the crisis as a manifestation of unregulated banking and development sectors was displaced onto a confessional discursive pattern in which emphasis was placed on rampant borrowing and consumption as reflective of collective narcissism and acquisitive greed. Hence the logic that ‘hubris’ led inevitably to a national fall from grace and the corresponding resurgence of postcolonial shame; and the interplay between cultural nationalist and neoliberal discourses …

"Impracticable, Inhospitable, And Dismal Country": An Examination Of The Environmental Impact On Civil War Military Operations In West Virginia, John Martin Mcmillan
"Impracticable, Inhospitable, And Dismal Country": An Examination Of The Environmental Impact On Civil War Military Operations In West Virginia, John Martin Mcmillan
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
“Impracticable, Inhospitable, and Dismal Country” examines the role of the natural environment in the campaign fought along Tygart’s Valley River in West Virginia during the summer and early fall of 1861. In the weeks following the capitulation of Fort Sumter, it became clear that hostilities would break out in present-day West Virginia. Divided political sentiments between secessionists and Unionists, combined with vital transportation avenues including turnpikes, the Ohio River, and the critical Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, forced the region into the crosshairs of regular military operations. As soldiers from both Union and Confederate armies mobilized in West Virginia, they soon …
Musical Expression And Spanish Nationalism In Selected Works Of Tomás Bretón, Brent Matthew Darnold
Musical Expression And Spanish Nationalism In Selected Works Of Tomás Bretón, Brent Matthew Darnold
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This thesis examines the creation of a Spanish National Identity during the late nineteenth century within the orchestral works of Tomás Bretón. Style analysis and the use of musical narratological methods place these works in the context of Spain’s turbulent nineteenth century and its new formation of national identity comparable to those that had been formed across the rest of Europe. The two conflicting styles that Bretón employed in his compositions represent two different approaches to the establishment of a national identity during the period. Bretón’s own intent with these works and their actual reception by the Spanish public are …

Waxing Poetic: A Bengali Tale In Singapore, Zakir Hossain Khokan
Social Space
In 2003, I left my freelance journalist job in Dhaka for work in Singapore as a construction supervisor. My wife, Jui, and son, Zarif, stayed behind in Bangladesh. Coming to Singapore, I brought with me my love for poetry, journalism and photography. Outside my work hours, I would read up on Singapore and explore the local literary and poetry scene. In Bangladesh, one can readily fi nd poems published in books and newspapers; however, I could not fi nd a single poem in any of Singapore's newspapers, and this gave me the initial impression that Singaporeans do not like poetry.

The Kapo On Film: Tragic Perpetrators And Imperfect Victims, Mark A. Drumbl
Scholarly Articles
The Nazis coerced and enlisted detainees into the administration of the labour and death camps. These detainees were called Kapos. The Kapos constitute a particularly contested, and at times tabooified, element of Holocaust remembrance. Some Kapos deployed their situational authority to ease the conditions of other prisoners, while others acted cruelly and committed abuse. This project explores treatment of the Kapo on film. This paper considers two films: Kapò (1959, directed by Pontecorvo, Italy) and Kapo (2000, directed by Setton, Israel). These two films vary in genre: Kapò (1959) is a feature fiction movie, whereas Kapo (2000) is a documentary. …

The Tragedy Of Lutheran Jurisprudence, Augusto Zimmermann
The Tragedy Of Lutheran Jurisprudence, Augusto Zimmermann
The University of Notre Dame Australia Law Review
The teachings of Martin Luther (1483–1546) launched the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. Luther believed in a discontinuity between God and humans that makes it impossible to provide an account of morality by reference to natural law. Rather, Lutheran jurisprudence rejects natural-law theory and it largely remains in the shadows of narrow legal positivism. According to Lutheran jurisprudence, lawfully promulgated decrees are laws even if they are completely arbitrary in their purpose and effect. Luther derived his doctrine on civil government exclusively from Chapter 13 of St Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. He saw in this passage no legitimate …

C. S. Lewis' Ambivalence Toward Rhetoric And Style, Gary L. Tandy
C. S. Lewis' Ambivalence Toward Rhetoric And Style, Gary L. Tandy
Faculty Publications - Department of English
While C. S. Lewis has been called by many names (scholar, teacher, speaker, philosopher, literary critic, and theologian, to name only a few), rhetorician is the name he often used to describe himself, and, based upon his life and body of work, it is perhaps one of the most appropriate titles for him. As James Como asserts, "[Lewis'] rhetorical temper provided a compulsiveness and a posture that could be resolved only in argument. Training, taste, and talent equipped him for an academic and apologetic career, to the exclusion of nearly all others ... Lewis was the quintessential Homo rhetoricus, knew …

A Viennese In London: English Reception, Joshua Iyer, Stephanie Tillman, Ashley Ramirez
2018 Festschrift: Franz Josef Haydn's "The Creation"
In a culture conducive to refining his compositions, Haydn was able to find success through his patrons and musical techniques. London was the largest musical city at the time, where advertising played a key role in the attendance at concerts. Haydn attended performances there which educated him on London’s music. His patrons (such as violinist Johann Peter Salomon and author Charles Burney) were immensely helpful in his growing musical career in London. Haydn’s shift in compositional style accordingly reflected his stay in London. He combined the music he heard in the city with his own musical language to create his …
The Final Campaign Against Boris Pilnyak: The Controversy Over Meat: A Novel (1936), Ronald D. Leblanc
The Final Campaign Against Boris Pilnyak: The Controversy Over Meat: A Novel (1936), Ronald D. Leblanc
Languages, Literatures & Cultures
This paper examines how the modernist Soviet writer, Boris Pilnyak (1894-1938), became the target of a renewed campaign of vilification in 1936-1937 that led to his subsequent arrest, interrogation, conviction (on trumped up charges of espionage and terrorism), and execution in 1938. The accusation of having produced slanderous, if not treasonous, literary works that were “counter-revolutionary” and “anti-Soviet” in nature that had been leveled against Pilnyak in the late 1920s as a result of the publication of two controversial works of fiction, “Tale of the Unextinguished Moon” (1926) and Mahogany (1929), was renewed in 1936-1937 as part of an anti-formalism …

Women And Dao In Gao Xingjian’S Works, Jianmei Liu
Women And Dao In Gao Xingjian’S Works, Jianmei Liu
Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報
Drawing on the existing scholarly studies that have gone beyond the misogynist paradigm, such as those by Mabel Lee, Gilbert Fong, Terry Siu-han Yip, Kwok-kan Tam, and Mary Mazzilli, I intend to explore the connection between the Zen Buddhist comprehension of Dao and the representation of women in Gao Xingjian’s novels and plays. As desire and sexual relationships play a very crucial part in the realm of Zen, the role of women is inevitably bound up with self-awareness and self-reflection, which are enshrined by Gao Xingjian as necessary on the path toward individual enlightenment. According to Gao, even if women’s …

Virtual Reality Technology And Customer Delight In Theme Parks: The Role Of Experience Quality, Chenge Jia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the rapid development of Virtual Reality (VR) technology, theme park companies are eager to apply VR technology to their attractions. Operating as highly hedonic consumption businesses, theme parks need to make sure that they offer unique and memorable experiences to customers in order to enhance their competitive advantages. However, empirical data is needed to understand whether and how VR technology will enhance visitors' experiences, including the quality of their experience, customer delight, and customer loyalty. Therefore, this study aims to examine how VR influences visitor's theme park experience quality, customer delight, and customer loyalty. Based on an in-depth literature …
