Occupational Therapy Collaboration In Creating Accessible Theatre, Chanelle Bautista, Alyssa Cho, Jazmine Cunanan, Ariana Marino, Miko Ramo

Occupational Therapy | Graduate Student Research Posters

Sensory-friendly theatre programs aim to dismantle social participation barriers for individuals with sensory processing differences by creating a relaxed theatre experience that includes preparatory materials, environmental modifications, and specialized training (Umeda, 2017). We implemented a pilot sensory-friendly performance of Willy Wonka, Jr. in collaboration with youth actors at the Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley, CA on February 13th, 2022. Our program illustrates occupational therapists’ ability to collaborate with theatres and contribute knowledge on sensory processing differences and environmental modification to increase community cultural arts participation for people with disabilities and their families.

Fun With Palamon And Arcite: Rationale And Strategies For Teaching The Two Noble Kinsmen As The Culmination Of The Shakespearean Canon, Joanne E. Gates Jan 2022

Fun With Palamon And Arcite: Rationale And Strategies For Teaching The Two Noble Kinsmen As The Culmination Of The Shakespearean Canon, Joanne E. Gates

Presentations, Proceedings & Performances

Hardly noticed in the reception of Harold Bloom's Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human several years ago was his hint that not The Tempest but The Two Noble Kinsmen makes an appropriate final accomplishment. On one level, the play is merely a stage adaptation of Chaucer's The Knight's Tale, with a rather crude couple of subplots thrown in, perhaps to please the commoners. In an undergraduate forum, I am less inclined to evaluate Fletcher's contribution as distinct from Shakespeare, but I do think the play important for how it is representative of many of the co-authored English Renaissance plays …

Shakespeare As Opera In English: Britten's Dream And Adès' The Tempest, Joanne E. Gates Jan 2022

Shakespeare As Opera In English: Britten's Dream And Adès' The Tempest, Joanne E. Gates

Presentations, Proceedings & Performances

I assert that we learn Shakespeare better when we study him against the adaptation. Some of the adaptation choices made by opera composers and librettists-- and especially by stage designers in recent productions-- provoke us to critique a production concept for its innovative staging, forcing us to learn more about Shakespeare's original. The recent Metropolitan's The Tempest conveys the 2004 Thomas Adès Tempest as if an 18th century impresario Prospero had conjured or appropriated the contents of the Milan opera house to his island. Meredith Oakes's libretto simplifies much of Shakespearean language to efficient rhyming couplets, yet this opera eloquently …

Autobiographical Elements In Elizabeth Robins' Review Of Sarah Bernhardt's Hamlet, Joanne E. Gates Jan 2022

Autobiographical Elements In Elizabeth Robins' Review Of Sarah Bernhardt's Hamlet, Joanne E. Gates

Presentations, Proceedings & Performances

This paper analyzes the review that the American actress in London, Elizabeth Robins, published in 1900 in response to seeing Bernhardt's Hamlet. I will demonstrate how the essay reveals significant information about Robins' career on the American stage, for she felt compelled to compare Bernhardt's performance with details from Edmund Booth's Hamlet, which Robins so very vividly remembered because she had such direct contact with his performances. Booth's Hamlet, as Robins reveals in an unpublished autobiographical novel, was the inspiration and salvation for the young Robins. When she first earned her way into the "bill-posters' seats," at the top of …

Fashioning The Flapper: Clothing As A Catalyst For Social Change In 1920s America, Julia Wolffe Jan 2022

Fashioning The Flapper: Clothing As A Catalyst For Social Change In 1920s America, Julia Wolffe

Honors Program Theses

Fashion has been a catalyst for social change throughout human history. Fashion in 1920s America in particular reflects society's rapidly evolving attitudes towards gender and race. Beginning with how corsetry heavily restricted women for nearly four hundred years up until the twentieth century, this thesis explores how clothing has acted as a tool for societal progression following World War I and Women's Suffrage and during the Jazz Age and The Harlem Renaissance. Specifically, this thesis examines how the influence of jazz music and dance that originated from Black American communities led to the creation of the flapper evening dress. The …

Cloud 10: An Exploration Of Immersive Theatre’S Many Benefits And The Process Of Creating My Own Cafe, Kyla Hunter Jan 2022

Cloud 10: An Exploration Of Immersive Theatre’S Many Benefits And The Process Of Creating My Own Cafe, Kyla Hunter

Theses & ETDs

Immersive theatre, at its core, prioritizes bodies and the human experience. Theatre goers are typically acclimated to a passive experience that encourages distancing between the audience and the imagined world. So, by utilizing immersive theatre as a tool, I will be bridging that gap and exploring how the benefits of this genre help to integrate non- traditional theatre goers into the world of theatre. I do this by examining immersive theatre's use of sensory stimulation, audience engagement and agency, interactivity, connectivity, and more. With this in mind, I’ve created my own immersive theatre piece, Cloud 10: an immersive and interactive …

I Must Be Burned Alive: Performance, Queerness, And Martyrdom Through The Lens Of St Sebastian, Elizabeth Barker Jan 2022

I Must Be Burned Alive: Performance, Queerness, And Martyrdom Through The Lens Of St Sebastian, Elizabeth Barker

Theses & ETDs

Saint Sebastian has become a somewhat well-known symbol of queerness and homoeroticism, largely due to a pattern emerging within renaissance art that depicts him as scantily clad and in varying states of ecstasy at the moment of his initial martyrdom. This installation takes this somewhat surface-level association and draws personal parallels between the hagiography of Sebastian and a lived experience as a queer person living in the United States, using self-portraiture and poetry to encourage the viewer to interact with the piece and to draw these connections themselves. This work takes several artistic interpretations of the same story and seeks …

Where Are Your Troubles Now? The Conceptualization, Design, And Construction Of Costumes For Cabaret The Musical, Madelyn Debrine Jan 2022

Where Are Your Troubles Now? The Conceptualization, Design, And Construction Of Costumes For Cabaret The Musical, Madelyn Debrine

Theses & ETDs

This thesis focuses on the design and creation of costumes for Cabaret the Musical and the research it takes to fully realize the concept. The first part describes the time in which the musical takes place to ground the play historically and explores the concept of gender as performance, focusing on the works of Judith Butler and Siegfried Kracauer. Delving into the expression of gender through dress, action, and performance allowed me to better understand the characters I costumed and aided in the design process. The second part of my thesis focuses on designing, constructing, fitting, styling and documenting a …

Comeback Stage: Trends Of Indianness In K-Pop | Performance Theory Feat. Video Essays, Kanti Gudur

Theses & ETDs

This interdisciplinary thesis examines trends of Indianness in the context of K-pop and is accompanied by a performance component in the form of a video essay. Through analysis of multi-media sources, I establish and explore the relationship between performances of racial and ethnic identity and K-pop. This is accomplished by analyzing trends of Indianness from the last decade through the lenses of Performance Studies and Psychology. The video essay and thesis are complements to each other, as they both examine the same sites of analysis, but are directed toward different audiences. The thesis prioritizes thoroughness and interaction with theory, while …

Production Managing Carrie: The Musical A Theatrical Case Study, Clayton Bauldree Jan 2022

Production Managing Carrie: The Musical A Theatrical Case Study, Clayton Bauldree

Theses & ETDs

This thesis focuses on the unspoken divide between performers and technicians in commercial theatre, caused mostly by directors, and how production managers can act as a bridge between them through the lens of a student production manager. Brought up throughout the thesis are also examples of how the work of technicians is just as artistic as the actors onstage. These points are shown in three parts, chapter one: which shows evidence of this divide via university marketing and technical theatre journals, chapter two: A day by day journal showing the in’s and out’s of production managing Carrie: The Musical and …

Performance As A Means Of Corporate Persuasion- An Elizabeth Holmes Case Study, Aleah Colon Alfonso Jan 2022

Performance As A Means Of Corporate Persuasion- An Elizabeth Holmes Case Study, Aleah Colon Alfonso

Theses & ETDs

This thesis utilizes a lens of performance to conduct a comprehensive case study of Elizabeth Holmes, a once world-renowned entrepreneur who used persuasion to defraud investors and create a company valued at $9 billion. Goffman’s model of self-presentation as performance is used as the overarching framework through which Holmes and her use of performance in corporate settings is explored. This thesis presents a literature review which details performance and its ability to persuade others, the role of corporate theatre in business leaders, entrepreneurial persuasion and business success, and how gendered self-presentation affects entrepreneurship. The methods section delineates how grounded theory …

15 Minutes In Heaven, David Perkins Jan 2022

15 Minutes In Heaven, David Perkins

Theses & ETDs

In this paper, I research the evolution of stand-up comedy throughout American history as well as key stand-up influences. I highlight the effect these comedians had not only on society but on my comedy as well. I also performed fifteen minutes of stand-up comedy in which I prepared material throughout ten weeks of deep research, performance, and corrections with my academic advisor Diego Villada. I detail the process of putting on a comedy show, how I felt before, during, and after as well as how I plan to apply what I have learned throughout this project to my future.

Inside, Outside, And Upside Down: Finding Creative Solutions In Sound Design For Covid-Conscious Theatre, Emily Damm Jan 2022

Inside, Outside, And Upside Down: Finding Creative Solutions In Sound Design For Covid-Conscious Theatre, Emily Damm

Theses & ETDs

When COVID-19 first hit, it stopped live theatre in its tracks, on both a local and global level. As theatres started to reopen, productions looked different. Performances were now held outside and with safety precautions such as social distancing and the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment for actors and audience members, there very quickly arose a new issue of the sonic intelligibility of a performance. The objective of this project was to observe and record the best practices of using sound in outdoor performance spaces on campus through practical experience and take note of the changes that COVID-19 has had …

Opera And Sound As Interpretive Frames For A Cbs And Warner Bros. Tv Show: The Hundred, Emma Garza Jan 2022

Opera And Sound As Interpretive Frames For A Cbs And Warner Bros. Tv Show: The Hundred, Emma Garza

Theses & ETDs

This thesis looks at a CBS and Warner Bros. (CW) television show, The Hundred, to examine prominent operatic themes and how it utilizes sound. The Hundred uses both its characters and plot to demonstrate a variety of dynamics, relationships and roles that are common opera staples. Todorov’s concept of the fantastic plays an essential part in the structure of the show, allowing a discussion of what qualifies as supernatural through the categorization of events under labels of the uncanny and the marvelous. Instances of sound are also highlighted through a lens of feelings such as fear. All examples are connected …

Embracing The Reggio Emilia Approach To Early Childhood Education, Tarabeth Brumfield Heineman Jan 2022

Embracing The Reggio Emilia Approach To Early Childhood Education, Tarabeth Brumfield Heineman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Each year, hundreds of early childhood educators from the many parts of the world travel to a small town in the northern part of Italy to study the arts-based, project focused, a child-initiated method known as the Reggio Emilia approach. This unique approach focuses on infant-toddler through preschool and primary education. While teachers are engaged in professional learning and growth, it is hard to determine how many early childhood programs and classrooms are truly influenced by the Reggio Emilia approach. The purpose of this study was to explore and examine the experiences of five teachers from West Virginia who have …

Patriarchal Colonization Of The Female Body In Machinal And Clit Notes, Saide Harb-Ranero Jan 2022

Patriarchal Colonization Of The Female Body In Machinal And Clit Notes, Saide Harb-Ranero

The Graduate Review

Machinal written by Sophie Treadwell in 1928 and Clit Notes written by Holly Hughes in 1996 are two plays half a century apart yet bring forth the female body upstage and center. I see Machinal bringing attention to the societal machine that takes control of the focal character, Helen, from the first act. Clit Notes shows how a woman’s body could be removed from its first society, her parental home, simply for existing in a body that refuses to fit in a patriarchal box that is designed according to its perception of what that body should be doing. Regarding the …
