From Beyonce To Bohemia: Reforming Joint Copyright Ownership, William Frank Weber Jan 2022

From Beyonce To Bohemia: Reforming Joint Copyright Ownership, William Frank Weber

Duquesne Law Review

JaQuel Knight. Reading this name, for many, will give them no feeling of recognition. The same people that do not know his name will more than likely immediately recognize this next name, Beyonce. Her name immediately conjures up iconic images, songs, and music videos. She is a global star that has released six studio solo albums, all of which have reached number one on the U.S. Billboard charts.1 Two of Beyonce's hit songs are "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" and "Formation." "Formation," with its numerous Beyonce dance routines, the solo dance of a young, hooded boy in …

Kids, Culture, And Queerness: The Progression Of Lgbtq+ Representation In Children's Media, Sarah Stevens Jan 2022

Kids, Culture, And Queerness: The Progression Of Lgbtq+ Representation In Children's Media, Sarah Stevens

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Historically, popular media has functioned as a window into society’s ever evolving idea of normalcy. Children’s popular media, which contains elements of both entertainment and didacticism, is further burdened with the responsibility of influencing the perspectives of upcoming generations. This truth is particularly salient for the LGBTQ+ community, who have faced consistent misrepresentation or utter erasure from children’s media in the recent past. While there have been marked improvements in both the quality and quantity of queer representation in children’s media since 2015’s Obergefell v. Hodges case, there is still a significant need to acknowledge intersectional queerness and queer gender …

Challenging Oppressive Expectations In American Theatre From Within: A Comparative Analysis Of Whitney White And Elizabeth Lecompte, Jessica Yates Jan 2022

Challenging Oppressive Expectations In American Theatre From Within: A Comparative Analysis Of Whitney White And Elizabeth Lecompte, Jessica Yates

Theatre and Dance Honors Projects

What does it mean to be a theater director with identities and social positions that do not align with those of 19th century, Western European directors? Inspired by the incredible lack of qualitative information on most female directors and directors of color, the scholarly component of this Honors project consists of an analysis of the directing processes of Elizabeth LeCompte and Whitney White, in particular LeCompte’s Hamlet and White’s An Iliad.

For that, I draw from documentation on LeCompte’s and White’s filmed materials of their work, hours of recorded interviews about their processes, and articles about their productions. Both directors …

Internalized Misogyny As Displayed By Aunt March In Little Women, Sydney Lofton Jan 2022

Internalized Misogyny As Displayed By Aunt March In Little Women, Sydney Lofton

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

It seems that more women fight against each other than for one another. Women have developed a reputation for gossiping to disparage the reputation of each other, leveraging terms like “floozie,” “bimbo,” and “slut” against one another. While women will rage against men who support the patriarchy, women are often some of the strictest enforcers of its standards. In Kate Hamill’s playscript Little Women, an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel, it is Aunt March, not a man, who places pressure on Jo to assimilate to society’s expectation of women. This push of conformity may reflect Aunt March’s own …

What Is Normal In Mental Health?: A Script Analysis Of Next To Normal, Caitlyn Campbell Jan 2022

What Is Normal In Mental Health?: A Script Analysis Of Next To Normal, Caitlyn Campbell

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

Next To Normal, the Broadway musical by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, follows a dysfunctional family whose matriarch struggles with a multitude of mental health issues. Delving into hard topics, such as mental health and family relationships, the musical challenges what we consider to be normal family dynamics and mental states. These important themes are mainly demonstrated through Diana, a mother and wife who struggles with severe mental health diagnosis. Through this analysis, these difficult questions are unveiled while looking closely at the musical’s plot structure, characters, ideas, and dialogue.

Designing Diplomacy: Jack Masey And Multiscreen Cinema At Expo 67, Brian Real Jan 2022

Designing Diplomacy: Jack Masey And Multiscreen Cinema At Expo 67, Brian Real

The Journal of e-Media Studies

The United States Information Agency (USIA) was America’s international public diplomacy arm throughout the Cold War. The agency used various media to counter Soviet messaging and portray the United States in a positive light. One of the agency’s most effective means of conveying such messaging was through exhibitions, such as trade fairs and world’s fairs. Jack Masey was a skilled designer and diplomat whose experiences on the ground in India and Afghanistan in the early 1950s would shape the USIA’s approach to exhibit design and execution for decades to come. One of his most significant contributions to the agency’s success, …

“Subverting” The Neoclassic Constraints: The Presence Of Magic In Early Commedia Dell’Arte, Yangzhou Bian Jan 2022

“Subverting” The Neoclassic Constraints: The Presence Of Magic In Early Commedia Dell’Arte, Yangzhou Bian

Theatre Student Scholarship

The project is an initiating discussion about the dramatic function and social-ideological implication of magic and magical elements in the surviving corpus of the Italian improvisational theater commedia dell’arte scenarios from the early seventeenth century. The essay begins with a cursory exploration of the position of commedia dell'arte amongst other notable theatrical forms blossoming across the European continent in the late renaissance. The study then focuses on eight plays selected from the 1611 Scala Collection to further examine the use of magic by commedia performers, followed by individual analysis of plot construct and dramaturgical theories. Finally, observations and connections made …

Mei Lan-Fang: The Masculinist Idealization Of Femininity, Yangzhou Bian Jan 2022

Mei Lan-Fang: The Masculinist Idealization Of Femininity, Yangzhou Bian

Theatre Student Scholarship

Mei Lan-fang was the most well-known Beijing Opera practitioner specializing in the impersonation of historical and mythological female characters. His captivating performance style is known as “The School of Mei”. It balances the external stage presence and internal precision and attends to the minutiae. His performances were drawn predominantly from the classic repertoire, and they have won him the position that “no other Chinese actor attained and retained” (Scott ii). Despite the general perception of Mei’s contribution to the emancipation of women through his work and his self-assertion of sympathy towards their suffering, the underlying motivation may not be as …

The Application Of Antitrust Law To Labor Markets -Then And Now, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2022

The Application Of Antitrust Law To Labor Markets -Then And Now, Richard A. Epstein

Articles

As of late, there has been a concerted push in the Biden administration, backed by prominent academics, to expand the application of antitrust law against major employers who are said to exercise monopsony power that reduces aggregate demand and thus leaves too many workers on the sidelines. The effort takes place chiefly in two major areas: stricter attacks on covenants not-to-compete, and more intense review of mergers under the Clayton Act.

This paper begins with an historical account of the law in both areas, from which it concludes that there is no good reason to alter the status quo ante. …

Of Law And Men, @Badgaltranny - Jan 2022

Of Law And Men, @Badgaltranny -

JCLC Online

This article was written in conjunction with the 2021-2022 Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology Symposium: Do Hate Crime Laws #stophate, #stophatecrimes, and #standagainstthehate? that occurred on April 8, 2022.

I, an Indian-American transgender woman, share stories of my sexual escapades with seven Trump supporters to move us towards new mountains in jurisprudential scholarship. I do so with the hope that my stories will expose some long-sunken truths (truths perhaps buried by our own law schools) about the human desires which drive people to police, and democracies to dominions.

The rabid protestations of Law Professor Storyhaters, triggered by the …

Principled Practice For Drama And Theater Arts With Multilingual Learners, Sergio L. Sanchez, Steven Z. Athanases Jan 2022

Principled Practice For Drama And Theater Arts With Multilingual Learners, Sergio L. Sanchez, Steven Z. Athanases

Benerd College Faculty Articles

All disciplines have particular ways of knowing, common practices, and means of using language that mediate and potentially support engagement with the discipline. For multilingual learners, language demands of a discipline can be a closed door or a facilitated entryway. Drama and theater arts, the focus of our article, are often marginalized in curricula across the grades and therefore receive less attention to relevant disciplinary activities and language demands. In response to this pattern, our paper has several aims. We highlight ways language demands are embedded in drama and theater arts curricula and activities. Second, we describe and analyze ways …
