The role of a scenic designer is so exciting but opportunities to design can fluctuate a bit. While the work is rewarding, the career itself can be much like a gig at times. Then when you factor in a major event such as a global pandemic, where does this leave a scenic designer in terms of employment and livelihood? This research investigates, at the time of writing, the methods and practices that have proven successful or not for teaching online scenic painting courses. Through the grounding offered by the data collected in this survey, this paper seeks to establish a baseline of common methods and practices currently utilized for scenic painting courses in the online learning environment. Ethnodramatic theatre performances are based on real people’s lived experiences, often collected through interviews, while reminiscence theatre pieces specifically consider the experiences of older adults, usually reflecting on their earlier life experiences. Our project had several goals for each participant group who were or will be involved. Our overarching goal for the project is to show both older and younger generations that love stories connect us all. We aimed to share senior citizens’ experiences in order to demonstrate that their stories continue to speak to contemporary youth. This dissertation consists of two parts. The first part consists of a synthesis of contemporary music composition pedagogy practices for the undergraduate and graduate level sequences. A conversation of the study of music composition pedagogy is used to investigate current pedagogical practices in music composition and present those findings as a resource guide for new and future teachers. The second part presents an Exploration of Time, Sound, and Space, an Aleatoric Event Score Collaboration with the LSU Museum of Art. The date of 10 May 1940 is well known for the start of the German blitzkrieg and the end of Neville Chamberlain’s tenure as British Prime Minister. That fateful day also opened a chapter in Canada’s war story that, in the end, saw more than 2,600 Canadian servicemen deployed to far-away but strategic Iceland. The Canadian commitment to that remote island from June 1940 to April 1941 was a metaphoric stepping-stone in the long Allied struggle against the Axis powers in the North Atlantic, building what ultimately became a secure strategic bridge for the deployment of the forces that liberated …

In September 1914, forty-one-year-old artist Arthur Nantel, from Montreal, Quebec, enlisted as a private in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Travelling overseas with the First Contingent, his trial by fire came during the Second Battle of Ypres, in April 1915. Captured during the battle, Private Nantel spent the rest of the war as a prisoner in Germany. During his captivity, Nantel left a unique visual legacy of his experiences. Based on several documents written by Nantel in 1919 and on thirty-one of his works of art held at the Canadian War Museum, this article explores his war service and works of …

This article endeavours to understand the strenuous circumstances which caused neurasthenia and nervous debility in Canadian nursing sisters during the First World War. By examining the treatment they received for their condition at the Canadian Red Cross X Special Hospital and at Northwood Hospital for Sick Sisters in Buxton, this article also explores how Canadian medical authorities handled the nurses’ treatment and momentarily challenged previous conceptions concerning mental illness in women.

The play is centered around a woman named Agnes, discovering and participating in her recently deceased, younger sisters Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Through Agnes’ fantasy filled journey, she undergoes each stage of grief through the game’s monsters and cast of characters, which allows an understanding and acceptance for her sister’s tragedy. There is a paucity of research exploring sources of resilience among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) young people with multiple marginalized identities. Information and communication technologies (ICT) offer unique opportunities for authentic self-expression, which is not always possible offline. The primary aims of this study were to understand unique sources of resilience among TGD youth in their online and offline lives. Using photo elicitation and grounded theory methods, we conducted online in-depth interviews with TGD young people (N = 29) between the ages of 14-25 across the United States identifying with at least one of the following social statuses: (a) …

Little Shop Of Horrors Dramaturgy, Rachel Smart

Celebration of Research

The role of a dramaturg is one of the most difficult to define in theatre. While dramaturgy is almost always a research position, the responsibilities that a dramaturg will take on will vary from production to production depending on the needs and vision of the director and crew. For this reason the artistry of a dramaturg is incredibly fluid, adjusting constantly. My role as dramaturg for Little Shop of Horrors this fall illustrated this, for I took on a variety of responsibilities some traditional to dramaturgy and others new to me: researcher, dialect coach, and front of house designer.

This is a performance about remembering—remembering an array of verbatim scripture pieces that are knit together in a way that draws attention to an overarching theme. Lines were separated in a way that conveyed what each Biblical character was remembering, and in a way to answer the question that sparked this project, “How do we portray the voice of God in religious drama?” In Remember, each actor took on the voice of God at certain points, at other times they were spectators in biblical times, and sometimes they were themselves in modern times remembering these words.
