Lately, people have been finding giant pet goldfish in lakes across America. You may see these tiny fish swimming in bowls at the county fair, but left alone in a lake or large pond, where they are dropped perhaps by a well-meaning child, they can grow to 20 pounds or more—and destroy ecosystems. The goldfish is a cautionary tale that has been told time and again in different forms, like Pandora’s box.

Exposure to stress and trauma activates key adaptive pathways, including the sympathetic adrenomedullary system and the immune system, which can result in long-term health impacts of trauma especially when experienced during sensitive developmental periods. Alterations in these systems are measurable through non-invasive methods including skin conductance response (SCR), fear potentiated startle (FPS), and inflammation. Research regarding the impact of trauma, and more specifically posttraumatic stress disorder, has primarily focused on adults, and there is a paucity of neurobiological research in displaced populations—like refugees—who may experience higher rates of trauma exposure and related psychopathology. It has become exceedingly common in our legal system that courts, in the guise of respect for precedent, compound upon errors. Legal precedents are written documents, but "[t]he reality we can put into words is never reality itself." As such, we seldom find a court decision that embodies the entire legal reality regarding the questions presented. In this respect, the legal system inherently suffers from a lack of what mathematicians call completeness. This video essay analyzes the early filmography of George Lucas as a critique of auteur theory. Dissecting THX 1138 (1971), American Graffiti (1973), and Star Wars (1977) based on their autobiographic qualities, this short documentary investigates the advantages and disadvantages of viewing a complicated cinematic work through the lens of an individual author. Analysis focuses on Lucasfilm founder George Lucas and his reputation for controversially altering his works through special edition re-releases, calling into question the sanctity of theatrical releases and the confines of a film auteur. Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States. While there are several treatment options available, none of these interventions specifically target the neural circuits known to contribute to alcohol use, abstinence, and relapse. In the following chapters, this dissertation will introduce transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) as a potential neural-circuit based therapeutic tool for AUD. Following a brief introduction to the neural circuitry involved in AUD (Chapter 1), Chapter 2 reviews the results of a multimodal randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial evaluating 10 sessions of TMS delivered to the frontal pole as a therapeutic …

A composer and bassist whose scores reflect his involvement in theater, dance, film and symphonic music, Doug Lofstrom also formed The New Quartet, a chamber ensemble which performs original music and arrangements, Trillium, and, most recently, joined the group The Last Word. What can the shifting British interpretations of sati in the period between 1650 and 1830 tell us about the changes in how the British saw themselves as colonizers? This is the central question that this thesis seeks to resolve. From 1650 to about 1750, British interests in the Indian subcontinent were similar to other Europeans traveling in the area, characterized by the establishment of trading posts and dependence on the governing Mughals. This exhibit to accompany the Thirteenth Biennial Virginia Garrett Lectures on the History of Cartography featured not only cartographic materials showing Texas’ physical and political boundaries but also original rare prints, books, broadsides, letters, sheet music, paper money, and photographs. These materials reflect the ideas and ideals that shaped early Texas history, which itself has undergone shifting interpretations that continue to change with time.

Objectives. This Place Is A Message is a populist performing arts piece created by Faultline Ensembles to explore the relationship between the individual emotional experience and the collective trauma of the climate change crisis. Through personal narratives and emotional appeals, this production seeks to build community solidarity through community-led storytelling and harness participatory theater for climate change communication to be used to find climate solutions in a joint manner. Methods. Data was collected and analyzed using a mixed-methods approach utilizing self-reported surveys, including audience pre-show (N=75) and post-show (N=48) assessments and a survey of cast and crew members (N=14). The question of literature’s utility in relation to the “real world” has been asked since at least the time of Plato. This essay examines an extreme instance of this problem by investigating two works, Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron (1349-1353) and Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven (2016), that argue for the value of art in the midst of catastrophe. Boccaccio’s collection of 100 tales, written in the context of the Black Plague, and Mandel’s post-apocalyptic novel about a world devastated by a killer flu, overlap and diverge in instructive ways in making their cases for the important role of literature in …

In 2015, a team at the University of Maryland Libraries collaborated on a pilot project to digitize 100 VHS tapes from the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange collection and, in doing so, established organizational workflows for video digitization and access. After completing the pilot phase of the project, staff who worked on the project published a case study in this journal that articulated a question echoed throughout that process: “Is this enough?” Enough descriptive metadata?
