Classrooms continue to become more diverse, and the overall demands on educators have expanded (Howe & Lisi, 2020). These changes require teachers to engage in cross-cultural interactions, to adapt instructional strategies, to be aware of the mental health states of young people, and to be more active in social justice issues (Baldridge, 2014; Hahl & Lofstrom, 2016; Henderson et al., 2019). All disciplines have particular ways of knowing, common practices, and means of using language that mediate and potentially support engagement with the discipline. For multilingual learners, language demands of a discipline can be a closed door or a facilitated entryway. Drama and theater arts, the focus of our article, are often marginalized in curricula across the grades and therefore receive less attention to relevant disciplinary activities and language demands. Sensory-friendly theatre programs aim to dismantle social participation barriers for individuals with sensory processing differences by creating a relaxed theatre experience that includes preparatory materials, environmental modifications, and specialized training (Umeda, 2017). We implemented a pilot sensory-friendly performance of Willy Wonka, Jr. in collaboration with youth actors at the Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley, CA on February 13th, 2022. Our program illustrates occupational therapists’ ability to collaborate with theatres and contribute knowledge on sensory processing differences and environmental modification to increase community cultural arts participation for people with disabilities and their families.

Hardly noticed in the reception of Harold Bloom's Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human several years ago was his hint that not The Tempest but The Two Noble Kinsmen makes an appropriate final accomplishment. On one level, the play is merely a stage adaptation of Chaucer's The Knight's Tale, with a rather crude couple of subplots thrown in, perhaps to please the commoners. In an undergraduate forum, I am less inclined to evaluate Fletcher's contribution as distinct from Shakespeare, but I do think the play important for how it is representative of many of the co-authored English Renaissance plays …

I assert that we learn Shakespeare better when we study him against the adaptation. Some of the adaptation choices made by opera composers and librettists-- and especially by stage designers in recent productions-- provoke us to critique a production concept for its innovative staging, forcing us to learn more about Shakespeare's original. The recent Metropolitan's The Tempest conveys the 2004 Thomas Adès Tempest as if an 18th century impresario Prospero had conjured or appropriated the contents of the Milan opera house to his island. Meredith Oakes's libretto simplifies much of Shakespearean language to efficient rhyming couplets, yet this opera eloquently …

This paper analyzes the review that the American actress in London, Elizabeth Robins, published in 1900 in response to seeing Bernhardt's Hamlet. I will demonstrate how the essay reveals significant information about Robins' career on the American stage, for she felt compelled to compare Bernhardt's performance with details from Edmund Booth's Hamlet, which Robins so very vividly remembered because she had such direct contact with his performances. Booth's Hamlet, as Robins reveals in an unpublished autobiographical novel, was the inspiration and salvation for the young Robins. Fashion has been a catalyst for social change throughout human history. Fashion in 1920s America in particular reflects society's rapidly evolving attitudes towards gender and race. Beginning with how corsetry heavily restricted women for nearly four hundred years up until the twentieth century, this thesis explores how clothing has acted as a tool for societal progression following World War I and Women's Suffrage and during the Jazz Age and The Harlem Renaissance. Specifically, this thesis examines how the influence of jazz music and dance that originated from Black American communities led to the creation of the flapper evening dress. The …

The Rad Finder team was tasked with developing an array of detectors that could locate the position of a radioactive gamma-ray source in three dimensions. Since the strength of the source was to be unknown, standard triangulation algorithms would not work. Thus, the team had to develop a method of triangulation that, to the team’s knowledge, had never been done before. This project was sponsored by Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and overseen by Dr. Bahram Nassersharif from the University of Rhode Island. Theatre goers are typically acclimated to a passive experience that encourages distancing between the audience and the imagined world. Saint Sebastian has become a somewhat well-known symbol of queerness and homoeroticism, largely due to a pattern emerging within renaissance art that depicts him as scantily clad and in varying states of ecstasy at the moment of his initial martyrdom. This installation takes this somewhat surface-level association and draws personal parallels between the hagiography of Sebastian and a lived experience as a queer person living in the United States, using self-portraiture and poetry to encourage the viewer to interact with the piece and to draw these connections themselves. This thesis focuses on the design and creation of costumes for Cabaret the Musical and the research it takes to fully realize the concept. The first part describes the time in which the musical takes place to ground the play historically and explores the concept of gender as performance, focusing on the works of Judith Butler and Siegfried Kracauer. Through analysis of multi-media sources, I establish and explore the relationship between performances of racial and ethnic identity and K-pop. This is accomplished by analyzing trends of Indianness from the last decade through the lenses of Performance Studies and Psychology. This thesis utilizes a lens of performance to conduct a comprehensive case study of Elizabeth Holmes, a once world-renowned entrepreneur who used persuasion to defraud investors and create a company valued at $9 billion. Goffman’s model of self-presentation as performance is used as the overarching framework through which Holmes and her use of performance in corporate settings is explored. This thesis presents a literature review which details performance and its ability to persuade others, the role of corporate theatre in business leaders, entrepreneurial persuasion and business success, and how gendered self-presentation affects entrepreneurship. In this paper, I research the evolution of stand-up comedy throughout American history as well as key stand-up influences. I highlight the effect these comedians had not only on society but on my comedy as well. I also performed fifteen minutes of stand-up comedy in which I prepared material throughout ten weeks of deep research, performance, and corrections with my academic advisor Diego Villada. I detail the process of putting on a comedy show, how I felt before, during, and after as well as how I plan to apply what I have learned throughout this project to my future.

This thesis looks at a CBS and Warner Bros. (CW) television show, The Hundred, to examine prominent operatic themes and how it utilizes sound. The Hundred uses both its characters and plot to demonstrate a variety of dynamics, relationships and roles that are common opera staples. Todorov’s concept of the fantastic plays an essential part in the structure of the show, allowing a discussion of what qualifies as supernatural through the categorization of events under labels of the uncanny and the marvelous.
