Back To School: Changes In Elementary General Music Curriculum Design After Covid-19, David Christian Moniz Apr 2022

Back To School: Changes In Elementary General Music Curriculum Design After Covid-19, David Christian Moniz

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this project is to identify how elementary general music curriculum can address the negative impacts of the sense of isolation felt by elementary music students because of COVID-19. When designed appropriately, components of the elementary music curriculum can help recover the sense of belonging lost during the implementation of forced remote and hybrid learning platforms. With the use of large-group surveys, this qualitative research study investigates the sense of isolation felt by elementary general music students after remote school attendance, hybrid school attendance, and non-attendance. These perspectives did not exist until recently, as the effects of the …

Indigenous Pennsylvania: Past, Present, And Future, Sarah E. Gilsoul

Student Publications

Gettysburg College recently adopted an official Land Acknowledgment Statement. However, there is little publicly accessible media that helps students, or the greater Gettysburg community, understand Indigenous presence in our region. This project, Indigenous Pennsylvania: Past, Present, and Future seeks to address the primary question, “How can we represent Indigenous presence within our region to be informative and inclusive of Indigenous worldviews and perspectives?” The study tackles two sub-questions: a) what are the best digital tools to generate a virtual and informative interactive map that can represent Indigenous senses of space, time, and land relations? and b) what aspects of Indigenous …

Concept Album, Apryl Berney Apr 2022

Concept Album, Apryl Berney

Assignment Prompts

Context: I designed several assignments to accompany the March 1st symposium “Listen Differently: Black Feminism, Music, and Popular Culture.” My first assignment is a Concept Album – it allows students to be creative yet also analyze and interpret the musical catalogs and existing work of women of color in popular music. My hope with this assignment is that by studying the music of women of color, students will better understand Dr. Tricia Rose’s analysis in her book Hip Hop Wars: What We Talk About When We Talk About Hip Hop.

Unconstitutional State Special Laws: Is Rational Basis Review The Rational Solution?, Chloe Slusher Apr 2022

Unconstitutional State Special Laws: Is Rational Basis Review The Rational Solution?, Chloe Slusher

Missouri Law Review

For centuries, scholars, judges, and lawmakers have argued over the role of the judiciary in striking down laws created by a democratically elected legislature. This problem has come to be known as the “Countermajoritarian Difficulty.” The famous Carolene Products footnote offers one widely accepted answer to the Countermajoritarian Difficulty. It stipulates that the judiciary should only invalidate laws that violate fundamental rights specified in the Constitution, disadvantage discrete or insular minorities, or undermine the political process. This approach promised judicial deference and allowed the legislature to create economic regulations. Debates on this subject typically involve federal courts. However, the Supreme …

Entropic Interactionist Theory: Reading Social Constructionism Through Thermodynamics And Samuel Beckett, Brie Barron Apr 2022

Entropic Interactionist Theory: Reading Social Constructionism Through Thermodynamics And Samuel Beckett, Brie Barron

Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism

This essay aims to explain the breakdown of social constructs through the concept of Entropic Interactionist Theory. EIT argues that it is the nature of creations to be vulnerable to the same forces as their creator, and that social constructions (like identity, for example) are subject to the very same physical forces that give rise to humanity’s creative impulse. At its core, EIT is informed by social constructionism and Nietzschean sociological theory, but it names the second law of thermodynamics and the concept of entropy as the driving force behind societal disintegration. The complication with this theory is that it …

Honors Theses

The history of gender performance is long and complex, spanning across different times and places that are each fascinating in their right and worth being studied. This thesis focuses specifically on the drag performances that take place in and around Dayton, Ohio. The research presented here is based on explorations of two distinct time periods 100 years apart from each other, the turn of the 20th century and the modern day. These two distinct times and cultures are each characterized by the performances that occurred, how they were received by audiences, the identities of the performers and the degree of …
