Mental Health Of Creative Professionals In Ministry, Anna G. Fawkes

Selected Honors Theses

This study examines the perceptions of creative professionals working in ministry. A “creative” is defined as anyone whose job relies on their ability to create and innovate, and the focus of this research is on creatives that serve in church environments where their creativity and spirituality are intertwined with their work. A quantitative research approach was designed to study the creative’s perception on six key-areas of their work/life balance. The resulting survey was administered online to willing participants who identified themselves as creative professionals in ministry. In the 1969 landmark case Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, the Supreme Court reassured students that they do not “shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.” Ever since then, the exact scope of students’ free speech rights has been unclear, but the high court has used Tinker’s substantial disruption test to clarify its scope in successive legal challenges. By classifying the COVID-19 pandemic as a victim crisis that effects all organizations, this study explores the crisis response of local nonprofit organizations in a small midwestern town and finds that these organizations have held a greater focus on priorities other than reputation repair and maintenance during the COVID-19 pandemic. When an organization faces a crisis — any phenomenon that challenges their reputation — their response is important to repair or maintain that reputation and thus their ability to profit, operate, or survive. Existing literature provides strategies for responding to a crisis based on its severity, attribution of responsibility, and …

Death Of A Salesman: A Theatrical Examination Of The “American Dream” On The Human Psyche And The Effects On Aging On The Mind., Kylie Chisnell

Honors Projects

Willy Loman is a salesman who is nearing the end of his life. As his mind begins to deteriorate, the viewer experiences several memories, dreams, arguments, and conversations that Willy has had. The Loman family in the play is in a perpetual cycle of denial, confrontation, and contradictions. Willy is most notably difficulty on his eldest son, Biff, who does not seem to live up to Willy’s expectations. The play tragically ends with Willy’s suicide and funeral. This theatrical version of the play will focus on the problematic issues that arise from chasing the notion of the “American Dream.” It …

Context: I designed several assignments to accompany the March 1st symposium “Listen Differently: Black Feminism, Music, and Popular Culture.” One assignment is a Mixtape assignment. It encourages students to apply Dr. Tricia Rose’s analysis of sexual politics from her seminal work Black Noise to popular songs from the last 5 to 10 years. The assignment should help students investigate how songs by women of color, especially Black women, changed since the mid-1990s when Dr. Rose’s critique of hip hop was first published.

This project facilitated the composition of a series of resources for the Bridgewater College Writing Center website, part of the MyBC online portal. The result was thirty resources on writing-related topics such as the writing process, including prewriting, drafting, and revising; citation styles and avoiding plagiarism; and grammar, mechanics, and style. These resources are available to Bridgewater College students, faculty, and staff. The primary purpose of these resources is to assist Writing Center tutors during tutoring sessions with students and to provide supplemental writing assistance for students. Law Faculty Scholarship

In Fundamental First Amendment Principles, published in the Northern Illinois University Law Review, David L. Hudson Jr. and Jacob David Glenn distill the complexity of modern free-speech jurisprudence into ten foundational principles that structure First Amendment analysis. The Article emphasizes that the core of the First Amendment lies in protecting criticism of government and prohibiting viewpoint discrimination, while also safeguarding symbolic expression, offensive and unpopular speech, and the right not to speak. At the same time, the authors underscore that not all speech is protected, identifying historically recognized categorical exceptions such as incitement, true threats, obscenity, and defamation. In Valparaíso, Chile, there is a teeming queer presence in the streets and public spaces. Expressions of queerness can be seen in Plaza Anabel Pinto in the way in which people dress or style their hair, can be heard from the small plaza in front of the Severin Library with the voguing/kiki music blasting at nights, and is grafittied on the walls all around the city. This presence and visibility is met with violence and accompanied by precarious life situations. It was my goal through this investigation to explore this relationship between violence and visibility as it is contradicted and …
