Professionalism And Dental Education: In Search Of A Shared Understanding, Sally Hanks Apr 2022

Professionalism And Dental Education: In Search Of A Shared Understanding, Sally Hanks

Peninsula Dental School

Professionalism has profound historical origins; however, the current health care environment in the UK dental sphere is changing, which presents new professional dilemmas that require continued learning and debate. Professionalism is a key aspect of the education of dental students and the lifelong learning and development of dental practitioners. However, 'being' professional can be challenging because while it is recognised as a social good, there is much debate on what professionalism means and how best it can be learned and assessed. Since 2017, the UK Council for the Dental Teachers of Professionalism, consisting of educators from UK dental schools and …

Performing Italian Identity: Through The Plays Gemini And A View From The Bridge, Angela Dicarolo Moser Apr 2022

Performing Italian Identity: Through The Plays Gemini And A View From The Bridge, Angela Dicarolo Moser

Theses and Dissertations

"Italian Identity"is the set of values and beliefs performed daily, that are markers of what it is to be "Italian,"whether those carrying those beliefs live in Italy or not. The latter point became evident in the United States following the vast wave of Italian immigration during the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Italian identity has been greatly influenced by Catholicism and its centering of values and beliefs on the family, heavily defined Italian life in America. One principal mode for constructing and disseminating these values and beliefs among Italian Americans was through the theatre. This thesis provides a close reading of …

Strengthening Adolescents With Anxiety Through Drama Therapy, Jeremy M. Moeller Apr 2022

Strengthening Adolescents With Anxiety Through Drama Therapy, Jeremy M. Moeller

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

In recent years social anxiety has become increasingly common in adolescents, requiring nurturance and assistance. With so many forms of therapy available, however, it may be hard for someone to find a practice that suits them. Drama therapy serves as a good option. It is a fairly new practice that helps adolescents to become more expressive and engaging in their everyday lives, decreases their social anxieties, and builds a new sense of confidence. By gaining a deeper knowledge of theatre and its history, adolescents are also provided with a new outlet through which they can explore and continue to grow …

Staging A Metaphor: Transplant As A Relationship In Lauren Gunderson's I And You, Georgia Su Ga Apr 2022

Staging A Metaphor: Transplant As A Relationship In Lauren Gunderson's I And You, Georgia Su Ga

Honors College Theses

First time directing offers many lessons to be learned. No two directors will learn the exact same things. For the sake of diversity of perspective, this is a positive thing. Directors are meant to be different from one another. It is necessary and eye opening to see one play presented in several different ways. While every directing process, vision, and final product varies from person to person, we can learn a thing or two from our fellow directors and gain inspiration.

Directing, especially for those just starting out, is an experiment for their methods, organization skills, rehearsal routines, collaborations with …

ETSU News

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 7, 2022) – As audience members make their first “flight” to Mars, Dr. Gary Henson often makes note of the audible gasps that fill the room.

“It makes the investment in the full-dome technology well worth it,” he said.

An associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Henson is the director of the East Tennessee State University Planetarium, a spacious theatre capable of stunning visual graphics thanks to a state-of the-art, full-dome digital projection system.

From Operetta To Broadway, Katelyn Blue Apr 2022

From Operetta To Broadway, Katelyn Blue

Student Scholar Showcase

Music compositions transitioned from the performance of operettas to Broadway musicals, as did musical study on a collegiate level. Although Universities did not begin teaching musical theater when the genre originally emerged, Broadway musicals have become a part of “classic” American repertoire. With the intent of improving music pedagogy and performance, the purpose of this research is to investigate the history of the Broadway musical in University settings. The particular problems of this study were to (1) explore the transition from operettas to musicals; (2) trace the development of musical theatere in collegiate study; and (3) to describe the University …

Beyond Citizens United: Democratizing The Economy In The Wake Of The Small-Dollar Revolution, Jay Hedges Apr 2022

Beyond Citizens United: Democratizing The Economy In The Wake Of The Small-Dollar Revolution, Jay Hedges

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

Citizens United increases the power of corporations over our political process. Under current corporate governance laws, permission for corporations to behave as political actors ignores the consent of a particularly important constituency of these business entities—labor. This neglect of workers reveals three democratic crises resulting from the corporate structure in the United States, which have only intensified following Citizens United. First, while the political speaking-power of corporations has been substantially increased, these entities lack legitimacy to speak on behalf of their labor constituency. Second, the use of corporate profits, generated by the corporation’s labor force, as the means …

Cultural, Political, And Choreographic Developments Of Feminism In Classical Ballet, Lydia Mariya Wirth Apr 2022

Cultural, Political, And Choreographic Developments Of Feminism In Classical Ballet, Lydia Mariya Wirth

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper explores how the ballerina can be better represented in the culture, aesthetics, and politics of ballet. Despite the patriarchal and misogynistic traditions that this art form is steeped in, women have made significant strides in reclaiming ballet as a tool of female empowerment rather than of suppression or objectification. A disparity of leadership positions, a traditionally disempowering training system, misogynistic ballet narratives, and patterns of abuse and harassment all combine to create a world that disempowers female dancers on multiple levels. Despite these realities, women have been at the forefront of narrowing wage and opportunity gaps, encouraging transparency …

Emerging Trends: Scenic Design Beyond The Stage, Kellie N. Murphy

LSU Master's Theses

The role of a scenic designer is so exciting but opportunities to design can fluctuate a bit. While the work is rewarding, the career itself can be much like a gig at times. Then when you factor in a major event such as a global pandemic, where does this leave a scenic designer in terms of employment and livelihood? Are there other possibilities for work with a Master of Fine Arts in Scenic Design? How do we continue to tell stories while providing for ourselves? Have artists considered how these skills are transferrable to other allied fields?

As a scenic …
