Celebration of Research

This project observes the enrollment rate of women at Northwestern College and why it is inconsistent. Data is used from satisfaction surveys of 2020 and 2021 enrollees, with the data being analyzed using R Studio. Types of data observed include type of visits students went on, types of scholarships, and interest in a Christian college atmosphere.

Little Shop Of Horrors Dramaturgy, Rachel Smart

The role of a dramaturg is one of the most difficult to define in theatre. While dramaturgy is almost always a research position, the responsibilities that a dramaturg will take on will vary from production to production depending on the needs and vision of the director and crew. For this reason the artistry of a dramaturg is incredibly fluid, adjusting constantly. My role as dramaturg for Little Shop of Horrors this fall illustrated this, for I took on a variety of responsibilities some traditional to dramaturgy and others new to me: researcher, dialect coach, and front of house designer.

This is a performance about remembering—remembering an array of verbatim scripture pieces that are knit together in a way that draws attention to an overarching theme. Lines were separated in a way that conveyed what each Biblical character was remembering, and in a way to answer the question that sparked this project, “How do we portray the voice of God in religious drama?” In Remember, each actor took on the voice of God at certain points, at other times they were spectators in biblical times, and sometimes they were themselves in modern times remembering these words. Scene design is more than providing actors the pieces with which they interact. It is part of creating the story’s whole world. In the Northwestern College Theatre Department’s 2021 children’s show, Charlotte’s Web, based on E.B. White’s classic novel and adapted by Joseph Robinette, all aspects of the show sought to draw in the eyes and imaginations of the thousands of children that graced our seats. From the arena seating arrangement to giant sparkling spiderwebs in each vomitorium, I wanted to create an immersive experience that enveloped the audience in the whimsy of talking animals and the realism of a …

As a costume designer for Northwestern’s Spring 2021 production of Eurydice, I did research into the different time eras and historical clothing of the eras throughout the play. The play is a Greek myth, set in the 40s, so my research included looks into both the Greek styles and that of the 40s and 50s, as well as a look at how the myth has been depicted in art throughout history. After gaining a deeper understanding of the repeating designs and silhouettes I saw throughout my research, I then turned to designing. I used the classic silhouettes of the times …

Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice

Mentor programs are an important component of transition programs, which help students successfully navigate the shift from middle school to high school. With that being said, little research has examined the impact of participation in a mentor program on the mentors’ servant leadership skill set. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate the impact of a peer mentor program and challenge course training component on the mentor’s perceived servant leadership skill-set. The Bear Essentials

Bear Essentials is an online newsletter published by the Student Activities Council of Des Moines Area Community College. The newsletter was established in early 2020 when DMACC closed its facilities due to the coronavirus pandemic. The newsletter covers topics such as upcoming virtual activities and events, college resources, and community service opportunities. When asked about the origins of the newsletter, Student Activities Advisor Erin Smith said, "We wanted students to know they were not alone, the entire DMACC Community was coming together to help support one another in any way possible."

The entertainment industry is driven by contractual agreements between actors, film studios, and countless behind-the-scenes players. When disputes inevitably arise, it is often within the parties’ best interests to resolve the issues quickly and privately, without garnering media attention. Arbitration provides disputants this avenue and it is why binding arbitration clauses are so prevalent within the industry. Arbitration clauses within a contract state that, should an issue arise between the parties, the parties will submit the dispute to arbitration. Arbitration allows for the parties to select an arbitrator, with a facilitator overseeing the negotiation, resulting in a legally binding outcome. …

Many Nollywood Christian films tap into a plurality of myths and idiosyncrasies prevailing in Nigeria in particular and the Christendom in general. Some of these myths and idiosyncrasies revolve around the perceived magical powers of the Bible, particularly the Holy Book’s ability to neutralize or prevent the designs of paranormal and satanic entities. In line with such Christian myths, many Nollywood Christianity-based films deploy various typologies of artifacts, signs and special effects to represent the Bible as an object which is more than a mere carrier of holy scriptures and the voice of God. Navigating The Public Funding Landscape: Lessons From One Small, Isolated, Rural, Arts Organization, Elise L. Kieffer

This study follows the experience of one arts organization in an isolated, rural, Appalachian community of Kentucky, to explore the relationship between the NEA and the state arts agencies with which they partner. Using the case study of Burkesville Academy of Fine Arts as an inspiration, this question is explored: If BAFA had received necessary technical support from the KAC, is it likely that it might have been awarded funding by the NEA? The study compares BAFA to organizations in comparable communities who received NEA funding. Following findings, suggestions for policy and practice are provided.

Fall 2020 marked the first fully virtual semester for P-12 classrooms across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Teachers were faced with challenges such as the digital divide, device access, and materials access (Prichard Committee, 2020). Toward improving the success of our teacher education candidates to teach in virtual environments, a task force was formed to investigate the use of Google Classroom, a free learning management system (LMS) which allows third-party creation, distribution, and collection of common P-12 classroom artifacts (Clark, 2020), Google Apps for Education (GAFE), and Google Level I certification.
