Final Master's Portfolio, Oluwatobi Idowu
Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects
In this portfolio, Oluwatobi Idowu engages with texts and cultural artifacts that explore the concept of power, identity, oppression, and imperialism as they relate to Africa, African American and Indigenous cultures in North America. He also explores late capitalism in relation to Mark Fisher's central ideas about capitalist realism, and its effect on young people in the 21st century.

A Feminist Perspective On Social Media’S Impact On Body Image And Mental Health In Young People, Marykate Kiley
A Feminist Perspective On Social Media’S Impact On Body Image And Mental Health In Young People, Marykate Kiley
Academic Festival
The rise of social media platforms has been accompanied by a dramatic increase in body image issues and eating disorders in male and female young people (Rodgers et al., 2020). Potential reasons for the increase in social media use and the increase in negative body image have been suggested to be the high-risk nature of the adolescent age group, the normalization of oversexualized and unrealistic body types in social media, and the innate gendered etiology of body image (Borowsky et al., 2016; McLean et al., 2015; Rodgers et al., 2020). Although eating disorders affect both men and women, it seems …

As I watched construction crews this summer begin the process of turning Mac Hall into something new and wonderful (see page 8), I was reminded of my own history with that building. Nearly 50 years ago, Linfield was in serious financial trouble. Faculty members were asked to help clean the residence halls in preparation for fall semester, since the cleaning services staff had been severely reduced as part of budget cuts.

The Contribution Of Domestic And International Conflict In Renaissance Italy To The Sport Of Fencing, Amelia E. Nason
The Contribution Of Domestic And International Conflict In Renaissance Italy To The Sport Of Fencing, Amelia E. Nason
Young Historians Conference
Fencing, the art or practice of attack and defense with the foil, épée, or saber, has progressed over hundreds of years from the warfare of Germanic tribes to a regulated Olympic sport. This paper investigates the development of fencing during the fifteenth and sixteenth century Italian Renaissance and outlines a variety of ways that fencing culture mirrored Italy’s at the time, demonstrating that Italian fencing was a product of both international and domestic conflict beyond the sport itself. The competitive cultural influence of aesthetic epicenters such as the Florentine Republic over other European countries—particularly France, Spain, and Italy—was paralleled by …
A Double Edged Blade: Contrasting Theories Of Dissection Within 16th Century Italy, Sarah Zdebski
A Double Edged Blade: Contrasting Theories Of Dissection Within 16th Century Italy, Sarah Zdebski
Young Historians Conference
Up until the Middle Ages, dissection was largely nonexistent. Gory and unsettling to the modern eye, physicians and anatomists alike agreed that animal dissections and comparative anatomies were more than sufficient to map out the human body. When academic dissections did begin to occur with regularity, they were rigid and formal in nature, relying on inaccurate anatomical texts written over a millennia ago by the Greek physician Galen. Dissection was a visual exercise, conducted primarily in Italian universities to provide a gory illustration for the medical student. The established format for dissection at the beginning of the 16th century …

Play As Curriculum, Drew Chappell
Play As Curriculum, Drew Chappell
Theatre Faculty Books and Book Chapters
Play as an academic field comprises multiple disciplines, definitions, and objectives and acknowledges a link between play and learning. Historically and in contemporary societies, play has been used as a teaching methodology; this occurs in formal classroom pedagogy as well as outside the classroom as part of informal and improvisational curriculum. Because play generally includes a component of pleasure, as a methodology it compels entry into learning in a way other practices do not. Yet this playful learning can be problematic, depending on outcomes and structures that define the play/learning experience through narrative and power dynamics. Scholars may analyze various …
