An Imaginative Tale From The Father Of C. S. Lewis, Crystal Hurd Apr 2023

An Imaginative Tale From The Father Of C. S. Lewis, Crystal Hurd

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

“The Story of a Half Sovereign” resembles traditional work of the late nineteenth century. It possesses a trace of its ancestors in echoes of Dickens, as well as some similarities to the genuine issues featured in the Irish courts during Albert’s tenure as solicitor. However, beyond its significance as a simple story, “The Story of a Half Sovereign” serves to demonstrate the political and spiritual climate in which Warren and Jack developed. Their father’s insistence on personal integrity and biblical morality, his early frustrations with privilege among the ruling class, and his conviction to perform his Christian duty were not …

Culturally Responsive Domestic Violence Interventions For Immigrant Communities In The United States: A Scoping Review, Abha Rai, Kristen Ravi, Nibedita Shrestha, Luis R. Alvarez-Hernandez Apr 2023

Culturally Responsive Domestic Violence Interventions For Immigrant Communities In The United States: A Scoping Review, Abha Rai, Kristen Ravi, Nibedita Shrestha, Luis R. Alvarez-Hernandez

Journal of Social Work in the Global Community

Immigrants are at a higher risk of domestic violence (DV) victimization due to their unique positionality in the United States. The goal of this scoping review is to examine the extent to which cultural responsivity is incorporated in DV interventions developed for immigrant communities. Peer-reviewed articles between 2005–2021 were reviewed across 11 databases. Our sample included n = 15 articles that highlighted interventions designed for diverse immigrant groups, including Latinx and Asian groups. Building unique interventions for specific immigrant groups would allow for prioritizing the needs of survivors while engaging in direct service provision by social workers.

Analogous, Catherine G. Mcdonald Apr 2023

Analogous, Catherine G. Mcdonald

Recital Papers

The recording process and traditional fiddle could be perceived as unrelated; however, the evolution of both in many ways could also be considered analogous. Correspondingly, the culminating recording of this project arranged, recorded, and produced tunes that emulated the evolution of the traditional fiddle and its recorded medium. This process included historically accurate arrangements, instrumentation, performance technique, and locations for recording. The double-sided album compared the usage of analog and digital recording and production methods based on the appropriate era for each composition. The “A” side of this project was recorded entirely with analog recording methods. The musical works for …

Engaging Drama: Does Drama Increase Student Engagement In A Second-Grade History Class?, Jasmine Villanueva Apr 2023

Engaging Drama: Does Drama Increase Student Engagement In A Second-Grade History Class?, Jasmine Villanueva

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This research investigated how drama integration benefitted students’ academic achievement and their engagement in history. This study integrated drama and history in a second-grade class, by allowing students to create tableaus to present and share information. The study used pre and post assessments, an attitudes survey to measure students’ attitudes towards history before and after integration, and the researcher also recorded student engagement at the beginning and end of drama integration. This study showed significant improvement in student content knowledge through the use of tableaus, and inconclusive results as far as engagement and student attitudes were concerned.

The War On Games: The Just Say No! Arcade As A Pro-Social Third Place, Philip Truman Apr 2023

The War On Games: The Just Say No! Arcade As A Pro-Social Third Place, Philip Truman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

The Just Say NO! Family Arcade in Louisville, Kentucky operated from 1989 to 1996 and was the only anti-drug themed arcade in the world. Jack Turner, owner and operator, got special permission from Nancy Reagan and the Just Say NO! Foundation to use the branding and imagery associated with the Just Say NO! campaign. While anti-drug advertising, Just Say NO!, and D.A.R.E. were all relatively unsuccessful campaigns in preventing drug and alcohol abuse in American youths, the Just Say NO! Arcade provides an alternative angle in teaching prosocial behaviors. This research seeks to answer whether or not an arcade can …

"The Packed Reality Of Heaven": C.S. Lewis's Imaginative Re-Education Of The Modern Pilgrim, Monika B. Hilder

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

How to think of Heaven then, which Lewis says “is, by definition, outside our experience,” when the fact is that “all intelligible descriptions must be of things within our experience” is a question that Lewis took seriously, especially since the scriptural imagery “[a]t first sight . . . chill[ed], rather than awake[ned], [his] desire.” He asked how a “typical modern” like himself might interpret the heavenly concept of glory. The first idea of fame suggested to him hellish competition; the second idea of brightness suggested the “ridiculous” image of becoming “a kind of living electric light bulb.” Indeed, he contends …

The Stylistic Achievement Of Mere Christianity, Gary L. Tandy Apr 2023

The Stylistic Achievement Of Mere Christianity, Gary L. Tandy

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

This essay will not attempt to explain the cultural, sociological, and theological reasons for the ongoing relevance of Lewis’s Mere Christianity. It will, however, look closely at several aspects of the work in order to assess its rhetorical and literary achievement. It will also suggest that, while Lewis’ understanding of Christian doctrine and his mastery of logical argument are important (and have received the bulk of critical attention), the success of Mere Christianity has more to do with the style through which the author communicated its content. Specifically, Lewis’ rhetorical or apologetic theory led him to focus on the …

"A Dreadful Thing": C.S. Lewis And The Experinces Of War, Timothy J. Demy Apr 2023

"A Dreadful Thing": C.S. Lewis And The Experinces Of War, Timothy J. Demy

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

From a Christian perspective, war entails the death and killing of people who are all created in the image of God and therefore have inherent dignity and incalculable worth. And yet, even after experiencing war at firsthand, C. S. Lewis believed that war is sometimes justifiable and necessary.

Like others of his generation, Lewis was deeply affected by the experience of war. He lived through the First and Second World Wars, serving as an officer on the Western Front between November 1917 and April 1918. His brother Warren (“Warnie”) was a career officer serving in the British army in both …
