This week, East Tennessee State University held a ribbon-cutting at the newly renovated Gilbreath Hall, the university’s oldest academic building. The event was part of the university’s Founders Week, a celebration of its founding in October 1911.

Named for ETSU’s first president, Sidney Gilbreath, Gilbreath Hall underwent significant renovations last summer, transforming its classrooms and offices with state-of-the-art technology and amenities that will improve the student experience.

“Gilbreath Hall has become a historical landmark for our campus,” said ETSU President Dr. Brian Noland. “It also is a symbol of our collective belief in a brighter future. This most recent renovation …

Kevin Rafter’s short book is an entertaining taste of the use and abuse of the arts in Ireland by successive Taoisigh(the plural form of the title of the Irish elected head of state, ‘Taoiseach’). It covers a century of cultural policy juxtaposed with artistic responses of the times, to reveal a story of official neglect and the privileging of economic concerns. Autistic Adults’ Experiences Of Managing Wellbeing And Implications For Social Prescribing, Charlotte Featherstone, Richard Sharpe, Nick Axford, Sheena Asthana, Kerryn Husk

Autistic people demonstrate poor outcomes on objective measures of wellbeing, yet research centring lived experience provides a more nuanced picture. There is growing support for person-centred, holistic and community approaches to enhancing wellbeing for autistic people. Social prescribing may be one such approach. This qualitative study explored the concept of wellbeing for autistic adults – including barriers and self-management – and the implications of this for modifying social prescribing. It involved semi-structured interviews with 21 autistic adults in the UK. Reflexive thematic analysis of the data supports research suggesting that self-determination may underlie many aspects of wellbeing for autistic people. …

This essay is an analysis and expanded defense of John Sutton’s essay “Exograms and Interdisciplinarity: History, the Extended Mind, and the Civilizing Process.” The first section of the essay surveys the extended mind literature, following the first and second waves of the Extended Mind theory. The second section explains Sutton’s exograms as external representations of internal thought. This section also details his argument that exograms extend the mind because, historically, exograms play a role in the internal functioning of a mind. The third section defends Sutton’s argument from objections against their place in mental processes, namely memory. The fourth section …

This essay occupies a niche wedged between Philosophy and Art, exciting both the creative and inquiring mind. Drawing on both foundational and recent work in the philosophical study of knowledge and aesthetic theory, this paper synthesizes two fields within the humanities: epistemology and live theatre. This presentation challenges the academic barriers that keep philosophy and the performing arts from fully participating in interdisciplinary communication, and challenges the conceptual definition of knowledge itself. Renowned author Jeff VanderMeer is coming to East Tennessee State University later this month.

Dubbed “the weird Thoreau” by The New Yorker, VanderMeer’s work has captured a range of awards. His “Southern Reach” trilogy, a New York Times bestseller, has been translated into over 35 languages. The first novel in the series, “Annihilation,” won the Nebula Award and Shirley Jackson Award, and Paramount made it into a movie in 2018.

Background: Delayed placental separation either after vaginal birth or caesarean birth is an important cause of postpartum haemorrhage, among other causes such as uterine atony. Intra-umbilical oxytocin has been shown to reduce the time to placental delivery after vaginal birth. However, the efficacy of intra-umbilical oxytocin to reduce the time to placental delivery following caesarean section birth is not known. Objectives: To explore the preliminary efficacy, feasibility and safety of intra-umbilical oxytocin to reduce the time to placental delivery at caesarean section. Cold Mountain Poems (CMPs), which have been neglected in the history of Chinese literature for ages, captured the attention of most Americans immediately after its being translated into America by the American poet Gary Snyder in 1950s, however. Naipaul’s (1932-2018) first Islamic travelogue Among the Believers: An Islamic Journey (1981) contains his experience of a visit from August 1979 to February 1980 to the four non-Arab Muslim-majority countries – Iran, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Similarly, his last Islamic travelogue Beyond Belief: Islamic Excursions among the Converted Peoples (1998) has a description of another visit to the same countries for five-month in 1995. It attempts at revisiting and reproducing the realities of misreading and variation upon modern Chinese introduction of the term “tragedy” (beiju) at different socio-historical periods, and has observed the interplay between two trends, namely, Westernization and localization, through the negotiation of “the tragic” into modern Chinese literary practice.
