Analysis Of Students’ Misconceptions And Error Patterns In Mathematics: The Case Of Fractions, Zoe A. Morales
South Florida Education Research Conference
This study analyzed three fifth grade students’ misconceptions and error patterns when working with equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions. The findings revealed that students used both conceptual and procedural knowledge to solve the problems. They used pictures, gave examples, and made connections to other mathematical concepts and to daily life topics. Error patterns found include using addition and subtraction of numerators and denominators, and finding the greatest common factor.

Users Acceptance Of Online Enrollment Processes In A Higher Education Institution, Luis F. Rodriguez
South Florida Education Research Conference
Little is known about students’ perceptions of online enrollment processes. Student satisfaction is part of the assessment required for accreditation, but evidence suggests that college administrators are oriented to retention and graduation rates rather than to consumer perception. The purpose of this descriptive quantitative study was to develop and validate a model that enables the measurement of online enrollment processes by the analysis of the students’ perceptions. The theoretical framework used to support this study was the process virtualization theory while the conceptual framework was based on Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). TAM is the most valid framework for studying user …

What Factors Influence Persistence Rates In Active Older Adult Group Exercise Programs?, Jennifer Danilowski
South Florida Education Research Conference
The purpose of this research is to determine factors that influence the persistence rates of active older adults participating in group exercise classes. During the study, group participants and instructors in a Florida facility were asked to respond to surveys ascertaining motivational factors regarding participation in active older adult classes. Utilizing participant data, instructors were given a professional development course as part of the treatment. Data indicates participants prefer working in group settings to prevent health related illness, for socialization, and for instructors. Research demonstrates that the instructor plays a critical role in advancing exercise understanding and providing motivation that …

Department of Physics
A measurement of the inclusive ZZproduction cross section and constraints on anomalous triple gauge couplings in proton–proton collisions at √s=8TeVare presented. The analysis is based on a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6fb−1, collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measurements are performed in the leptonic decay modes ZZ →, where=e, μand =e, μ, τ. The measured total cross section σ(pp →ZZ) =7.7 ±0.5(stat)+0.5−0.4(syst)±0.4 (theo) ±0.2(lumi)pb, for both Zbosons produced in the mass range 60

Understanding Ten-Eleven Translocation-2 In Hematological And Nervous Systems, Feng Pan
Understanding Ten-Eleven Translocation-2 In Hematological And Nervous Systems, Feng Pan
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
I proposed the study of two distinct aspects of Ten-Eleven Translocation 2 (TET2) protein for understanding specific functions in different body systems.
In Part I, I characterized the molecular mechanisms of Tet2 in the hematological system. As the second member of Ten-Eleven Translocation protein family, TET2 is frequently mutated in leukemic patients. Previous studies have shown that the TET2 mutations frequently occur in 20% myelodysplastic syndrome/myeloproliferative neoplasm (MDS/MPN), 10% T-cell lymphoma leukemia and 2% B-cell lymphoma leukemia. Genetic mouse models also display distinct phenotypes of various types of hematological malignancies. I performed 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-Seq) and RNA …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Background
Intracranial volume (ICV) is an important normalization measure used in morphometric analyses to correct for head size in studies of Alzheimer Disease (AD). Inaccurate ICV estimation could introduce bias in the outcome. The current study provides a decision aid in defining protocols for ICV estimation in patients with Alzheimer disease in terms of sampling frequencies that can be optimally used on the volumetric MRI data, and the type of software most suitable for use in estimating the ICV measure.
Methods
Two groups of 22 subjects are considered, including adult controls (AC) and patients with Alzheimer Disease (AD). Reference measurements …

Background
The lives of half a million children in the United States are severely affected due to the alterations in their functional and mental abilities which epilepsy causes. This study aims to introduce a novel decision support system for the diagnosis of pediatric epilepsy based on scalp EEG data in a clinical environment.
Methods
A new time varying approach for constructing functional connectivity networks (FCNs) of 18 subjects (7 subjects from pediatric control (PC) group and 11 subjects from pediatric epilepsy (PE) group) is implemented by moving a window with overlap to split the EEG signals into a total of …

Morphological And Physiological Responses Of Seagrasses (Alismatales) To Grazers (Testudines: Cheloniidae) And The Role Of These Responses As Grazing Patch Abandonment Cues, Elizabeth A. Lacey, Ligia Collado-Vides, James W. Fourqurean
Department of Biological Sciences
Green sea turtles, Chelonia mydas, are grazers influencing the distribution of seagrass within shallow coastal ecosystems, yet the drivers behind C. mydas patch use within seagrass beds are largely unknown. Current theories center on food quality (nutrient content) as the plant responds to grazing disturbances; however, no study has monitored these parameters in a natural setting without grazer manipulation. To determine the morphological and physiological responses potentially influencing seagrass recovery from grazing disturbances, seagrasses were monitored for one year under three different gazing scenarios (turtle grazed, fish grazed and ungrazed) in a tropical ecosystem in Alcumal Bay, Quintana Roo, Mexico. …

The Argentine Dilemma: “Vulture Funds” And The Risks Posed To Developing Economies, Mine Doyran
The Argentine Dilemma: “Vulture Funds” And The Risks Posed To Developing Economies, Mine Doyran
Class, Race and Corporate Power
Post-crisis Argentina is a case study of crisis management through debt restructuring. This article examines how Argentina negotiated the external debt in the wake of the sovereign default in December 2001 and now confronts challenges posed by holdout creditors—the so called “vulture funds”. It argues that debt restructuring has put a straitjacket on the national economy, making it virtually impossible for healthy growth short of a break with the international economic order. While Argentina has successfully restructured a $95 billion debt with an unprecedented “hair cut” (around 70% reduction in “net value of debt”), a sustainable growth appears out of …

Czechs Look Back On 1989, A Revolution Betrayed: A Reflection On The Mythology Of The Velvet Revolution, Lukáš Rychetský, Jaroslav Fiala
Class, Race and Corporate Power
Twenty-five years ago today the Velvet Revolution kicked off in what was then Czechoslovakia to bring an end to the one-party government of the Communist Party. This exclusive translation of a feature from the Czech journal A2 Cultural Bi-Weekly explains that the events of 1989 were about more than just Václav Havel, a playwright and leader in the revolution who was elected president in 1990. A generation of unfulfilled promises later, Czechs are struggling to revive the spirit of not only democracy and humanism, but also socialism.
This article originally appeared in Ricochet, November 17, 2014.

Biosensors For Inorganic And Organic Arsenicals, Jian Chen, Barry P. Rosen
HWCOM Faculty Publications
Arsenic is a natural environmental contaminant to which humans are routinely exposed and is strongly associated with human health problems, including cancer, cardiovascular and neurological diseases. To date, a number of biosensors for the detection of arsenic involving the coupling of biological engineering and electrochemical techniques has been developed. The properties of whole-cell bacterial or cell-free biosensors are summarized in the present review with emphasis on their sensitivity and selectivity. Their limitations and future challenges are highlighted.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive dysfunction of memory and higher cognitive functions with abnormal accumulation of extracellular amyloid plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles throughout cortical and limbic brain regions. Withania somnifera (WS) also known as ‘ashwagandha’ (ASH) is used widely in Ayurvedic medicine as a nerve tonic and memory enhancer. However, there is paucity of data on potential neuroprotective effects of ASH against β-Amyloid (1–42) (Aβ) induced neuropathogenesis. In the present study, we have tested the neuroprotective effects of Methanol: Chloroform (3:1) extract of ASH and its constituent Withanolide A (WA) against Aβ induced toxicity, HIV-1Ba-L (clade …
