The Flexi Disc: A Brief History And Timeline Of The Making And Distribution, Jada Villaroel Feb 2026

The Flexi Disc: A Brief History And Timeline Of The Making And Distribution, Jada Villaroel

SOURCE Explore Program

The Flexi Disc, popular between the 1960s and 1990s, was an innovative product which brought decades of cheap music distribution to the homes of many Americans. Within the Plastic Artifacts Collection at Syracuse University are several flexi discs used as advertising, ranging from current musical artists to large food chains preserved in mailing envelopes from several decades of the 1900's. Observing these artifacts provided data and information to answer the question: how were flexi discs able to be manufactured at such low costs while maintaining a profitable market? Multiple sources, including physical flexi discs and chat logs, from the Special …

Nanoscale Opportunities In Extracellular Matrix Mimicry, L. Andrew Lyon, Abbygail Caine, Elif Narbay, E. Daniel Cárdenas-Vásquez

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We present an overview of the composition, function, energetics, and dynamics of extracellular matrix and its relation to nanoscale structures and phenomena. These concepts are then related to the development of synthetic and biosynthetic materials that aim to mimic the extracellular matrix for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering technologies. Notable successes and advancements towards the goal of biomimicry are outlined, while remaining challenges and knowledge gaps towards that goal are highlighted. Finally, we frame the remaining challenges in the field in terms of nanoscience-related research opportunities that if solved, might prove to be transformative steps forward in the discipline.

Exosome Engineering For Blocking Gut Dysbiosis And Inducing Cell Death Mechanisms In Glioblastoma Multiforme, Ahalya Muraleedharan, Karthik Rangavajhula, Swapan K. Ray

Faculty Publications

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most lethal primary brain tumor in adults. Emerging evidence endorses that gut dysbiosis contributes to GBM progression through the gut–brain axis (GBA), promoting inflammation and therapeutic resistance via abnormal short-chain fatty acid production and cytokine dysregulation. Exosomes, naturally occurring nanovesicles (30–150 nm), offer promising therapeutic potential due to their blood–brain barrier permeability, biocompatibility, and versatile cargo capacity. This review examines exosome engineering strategies for dual targeting: inhibiting alterations in gut microbiome and inducing regulated cell death mechanisms such as apoptosis and ferroptosis in GBM. We describe exosome engineering with detailed focus on cargo loading approaches …

Hold Your Horses: The Eleventh Circuit Recognizes A Direct Cause Of Action Under The Takings Clause In Fulton V. Fulton County Board Of Commissioners, Brock Gumbel

Mercer Law Review

“[No person shall be] deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.” In just twelve words, the drafters of the Bill of Rights guaranteed property owners a significant protection. The Fifth Amendment Takings Clause is not an express ban on government takings. Rather, it guarantees that when the government takes property from private citizens, it must provide just compensation. Although this guarantee is generally well established, its enforcement in federal court introduces unique and significant challenges.

Plaintiffs must have a cause of action to invoke …

Egain Tube Memristors Offering Reliable Switching On A Biological Time Scale, Yuriy V. Pershin, Liya Patel, Bapi Bera, Doug Aaron, Stephen A. Sarles

Faculty Publications

Memristive devices have been considered promising candidates for nature-inspired computing and in-memory information processing. However, experimental devices developed to date typically show significant variability and function at different time scales than biological neurons and synapses. This study presents a memristive device comprised of liquid-metal eutectic gallium indium (EGaIn) contained within a mm-scale tube that operates via a bulk, voltage-dependent switching mechanism and exhibits distinct unipolar resistive switching characteristics that occur on a biological time scale (tens of milliseconds). The switching mechanism involves voltage-controlled growth and dissolution of an oxide layer on the surface of the liquid metal in contact with …

Stuck In The Waiting Room: Medina V. Planned Parenthood’S Restriction On The Enforcement Of Spending Statutes Through 42 U.S.C. § 1983, Rebekah Rooks Feb 2026

Stuck In The Waiting Room: Medina V. Planned Parenthood’S Restriction On The Enforcement Of Spending Statutes Through 42 U.S.C. § 1983, Rebekah Rooks

Mercer Law Review

42 U.S.C. § 1983 was originally enacted in response to Ku Klux Klan violence during the Reconstruction era that had gone largely unpunished in state courts. The statute granted individuals an alternative means to enforce their “rights, privileges, or immunities secured by the Constitution and laws” in federal courts. What began as a lifeline for civil rights violations soon expanded to allow enforcement of all rights secured by federal and constitutional law. This broad interpretation of § 1983 language expanded the statute’s reach to include private enforcement of federal spending statutes against the states. The expansion ignited extensive debate over …

Elixhauser Comorbidity Index To Predict Perioperative Bleeding And Adverse Spine Surgery Outcomes, Mitchell K. Ng, Michael A. Mont, Mosadoluwa Afolabi, Prathiksha N V, Amitha Kumar, Stephen S. Johnston

Rothman Institute Papers

Introduction: As spine surgery volume continues to grow, ensuring patient safety and minimizing complications are increasingly critical. Disruptive bleeding—defined as hemorrhagic events requiring clinical intervention—is a significant perioperative challenge. This study aimed to: (1) quantify disruptive bleeding incidence; (2) evaluate associations between patient demographics, Elixhauser Comorbidity Index (ECI), and bleeding risk; and (3) assess the impact of disruptive bleeding on mortality, ventilator use, length of inpatient stay, 90-day readmissions, and inpatient costs. Methods: A nationwide healthcare database was used to identify patients who underwent spine surgery in 2019. Patients were subdivided by the Elixhauser Comorbidity Index (ECI) from 0 to …

Atypical High-Burden Breakthrough Varicella: A Diagnostic Pitfall In The Two-Dose Vaccine Era, Smaran Marupudi, Jared Hensley, Robert Vezzetti

School of Medicine Publications

We present the case of a seven-year-old fully immunized male who developed an intensely pruritic, generalized maculopapular rash that progressed to vesicles. The patient’s rash was initially diagnosed by his primary care provider as possible scabies and treated with topical permethrin. Our examination revealed a diffuse maculopapular and vesicular exanthem with lesions at various stages of evolution, eventually progressing to secondary cellulitis. The patient’s presentation, consistent with varicella (chickenpox), highlights the diagnostic challenges of breakthrough varicella infection and potential complications in fully vaccinated children. Thus, we highlight the importance of having a high clinical index of suspicion for varicella, even …

Design And Control Of A Multi-Modal Electromagnetic Floor Array For Foot-Based Human Locomotion And Stabilization In Microgravity, Aryan Anand Feb 2026

Design And Control Of A Multi-Modal Electromagnetic Floor Array For Foot-Based Human Locomotion And Stabilization In Microgravity, Aryan Anand

Electrical Engineering Theses

Long-duration living and working in microgravity creates everyday mobility problems such as drifting, loss of stable footing, higher effort to move, and difficulty doing routine tasks safely. Many solutions have been proposed in literature, including handrails, restraint systems, and concepts for artificial gravity using rotation. Artificial gravity could improve comfort, but it is complex to build and operate for large spacecraft, especially when future missions may include not only trained astronauts but also common people. With companies like SpaceX pushing toward large-scale travel and long-term settlement goals, there is a need for simpler mobility support technologies that can work inside …

Reporting Workplace Violence: Why Is It A Challenge?, Rebekah Powers, Carol Boswell Feb 2026

Reporting Workplace Violence: Why Is It A Challenge?, Rebekah Powers, Carol Boswell

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA, n.d.) defines workplace violence to include "any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site.” Workplace violence is a developing challenge within health care settings following the adversities encountered with behavioral issues acknowledged after the pandemic. Workplace violence includes physical episodes, verbal episodes, threats, and sexual harassment experiences, yet remains underreported (NIOSH, 2020). Nurses and nurse aides are two groups who are at the highest risk of becoming victims of violence due to their involvement with direct patient care. An acute care …

From Phone Booths To Digital Booths: Rethinking Fourth Amendment Privacy In The Age Of Open Source Intelligence, Major Theodore H. Massey Iii Feb 2026

From Phone Booths To Digital Booths: Rethinking Fourth Amendment Privacy In The Age Of Open Source Intelligence, Major Theodore H. Massey Iii

Mercer Law Review

The use of Open Source Intelligence (“OSINT”) by the U.S. intelligence community marks a paradigm shift in national security practices, leveraging vast troves of publicly available and commercially acquired data. Yet this shift raises urgent constitutional questions regarding the applicability of the Fourth Amendment’s protections in the digital age. As OSINT practices increasingly rely on sophisticated aggregation techniques and artificial intelligence tools, the line between publicly available information and constitutionally protected privacy interests begins to blur. This Article critically examines whether certain forms of OSINT collection and analysis, particularly those that aggregate digital data at scale or use predictive algorithms, …

A Pathfinder Lunar Construction Mission Concept Using Regolith Filled Bags, Cameron S. Dickinson, Fu Nan Shi, Ketan Vasudeva, Rudranarayan M. Mukherjee, Joshua Blanchard, Steve Dubrule, Paul Van Susante, Et Al.

Michigan Tech Publications

Two challenges that have a permanent presence on the Moon are solar and cosmic radiation, as well as the large surface temperature variation between lunar day and night. To address these problems, we propose a lunar pathfinder mission concept that uses robotic systems to investigate whether regolith-filled bags can be used as a versatile construction medium for lunar surface structures and sensors to obtain data on the lunar regolith. The primary objectives of this mission are as follows: evaluation of the surface and subsurface regolith as fill material, lunar excavation using a robotic manipulator equipped with a bucket scoop, bag …

Toward A Model Of Agentic Professional Learning: A Phenomenological Study Of Collective Efficacy Development, Stephanie Thomas Feb 2026

Toward A Model Of Agentic Professional Learning: A Phenomenological Study Of Collective Efficacy Development, Stephanie Thomas

Education Dissertations

Collective teacher efficacy (CTE) refers to a faculty’s shared belief in its collective ability to take action and positively impact student outcomes in ways more influential than other predictive factors, including socioeconomic status or prior achievement. Research has shown that high levels of CTE are associated with improved student achievement as well as positive outcomes and productive behaviors among educators. However, limited attention has been given to how intentional design and facilitation of professional learning experiences could foster the development of CTE. Given the strong empirical evidence linking CTE with student achievement and the virtuous cycle, or bidirectional causality, between …

Identical Vanishing Of Coefficients In The Series Expansion Of Eta Quotients, Modulo 4, 9 And 25, Tim Huber, James Mclaughlin, Dongxi Ye

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Let A(q)=:∑∞n=0anqn and B(q)=:∑∞n=0bnqn be two eta quotients. In some previous papers, the present authors considered the problem of when

an=0⟺bn=0.

In the present paper we consider the “mod m” version of this problem, i.e. for which eta quotients A(q) and B(q) and for which integers m>1 do we have (non-trivially) that

an≡0(modm)⟺bn≡0(modm)?

(We say “non-trivially” as there are trivial situations where an≡bn(modm) for all n≥0). The m for which we found non-trivial (in the sense just mentioned) results were m=p2, p=2,3 and 5. For m=4 and m=9, we found results which …

Rapid-Response Reconnaissance Architecture Design For Planetary Defense With Nested Trajectory Optimization, Adam P. Wilmer, Justin A. Atchison, Marcus J. Holzinger, Robert A. Bettinger Feb 2026

Rapid-Response Reconnaissance Architecture Design For Planetary Defense With Nested Trajectory Optimization, Adam P. Wilmer, Justin A. Atchison, Marcus J. Holzinger, Robert A. Bettinger

Faculty Publications

Reconnaissance is a vital component in a comprehensive planetary defense mitigation strategy—aimed at preventing or reducing the impact threat posed by celestial objects on close-approach trajectories to Earth. It provides decision-makers with critical information on the physical and orbital properties of a near-Earth object (NEO), enabling better assessment of size, composition, and trajectory. This study investigates how to optimally pre-position a fleet of reconnaissance spacecraft prior to the discovery of a specific hazardous NEO. It evaluates response timelines and mission success rates for combinations of spacecraft launched from Earth and those maneuvering from pre-deployed locations within the Sun-Earth system. A …

How A 2 To 5-Year Experimental Lake Powell And Lake Mead Release Program Tied To Reservoir Inflows Can Be A Win For Adaptive Risk Management, Brittany Fager, Anabelle Myers, Erik Porse, David Rosenberg Feb 2026

How A 2 To 5-Year Experimental Lake Powell And Lake Mead Release Program Tied To Reservoir Inflows Can Be A Win For Adaptive Risk Management, Brittany Fager, Anabelle Myers, Erik Porse, David Rosenberg

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Lake Powell and Lake Mead are at risk of drawdown to their minimum power and dead pools in the next few years because current and proposed shortage and release operations tied to reservoir storage and sometimes prior natural flow cannot keep pace with U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s numerous scenarios of more volatile, declining, and longer-lasting periods of low flows. One experimental program to reduce risk can instead adapt reservoir releases to monitored changes in physical reservoir inflow and reservoir evaporation. First, stabilize reservoir storage by temporarily setting reservoir release to the physical reservoir inflow minus evaporation (the available water). Second, …
