Neurocognitive Teaching Strategies In The English Language Learner Classroom, Susan Annette Biasco Jan 2025

Neurocognitive Teaching Strategies In The English Language Learner Classroom, Susan Annette Biasco

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The emergence of advanced medical technology in the past 30 years has allowed doctors and researchers to look inside the brain to more accurately model cognition and memory. The concept of neuroplasticity has replaced the outdated idea that we are born with all the brain connections we will ever have. Based on these new discoveries, neurocognitive teaching strategies seek to apply the model of how the brain learns best to classroom pedagogy. Teaching techniques that put the student at the center of the equation, instead of the teacher, have been repeatedly shown in the research to improve learning and knowledge …

Investigating The Relationship Of Feminization Of Education And Teacher Attrition, Kate Irene Toriseva Trosen Jan 2025

Investigating The Relationship Of Feminization Of Education And Teacher Attrition, Kate Irene Toriseva Trosen

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The feminization of teaching has taken place over multiple centuries, born of a mixture of social-political movements which reveal current complex issues leading to a shortage of young women entering and staying in education careers. Through a review of literature and study on the subjects of educational feminization, teacher attrition, and female workplace concerns and preferences, this thesis assessed the correlations between current teacher shortages and female-based causes and solutions. By assessing these reasons, studying the working habits of women, and evaluating teachers’ reported concerns and reasons for leaving the classroom, this literature review identified important causational effects directly related …

Hearts Hidden Message: Right Ventricular Thrombus Reveals Esophageal Adenocarcinoma, Devika Adusumilli, Seline Haci, Jafri Imran, Arman Vaghefi, Mehdi Khalafi, Ikponmwosa Iyamu, Sarvanan Balamuthusamy

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Introduction Right ventricular thrombi are uncommon, usually found with concurrent pulmonary emboli and associated with significant mortality. They often originate from deep vein thrombi but may also be due to primary intracardiac processes . A right ventricular thrombus can be an unexpected marker for underlying malignancies, including esophageal cancer. This occurs due to the hypercoagulable state often induced by malignancy. Here we report a presentation where the identification of a right ventricular thrombus led to the diagnosis of esophageal cancer. Case Presentation Our patient is a 57-year old male with no past medical history who experienced an episode of dizziness …

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

This quasi-experimental trial examined the relationship between Schistosoma haematobium infection and nutritional status, and the impact of single dose praziquantel (PZQ) therapy on undernutrition. A total of 353 children were examined, 112 of which were infected with S. haematobium and treated with PZQ. Children's heights, weights, and mid-upper arm circumferences (MUAC) were measured at baseline and one month post-treatment. Infected children had significantly smaller mean BMI-for-age z-scores (BAZ) (-1.16 vs. 0.11, p < 0.01) and weight-for-age z-scores (WAZ) (-0.61 vs. -0.31, p = 0.03) than the uninfected ones at baseline. S. haematobium infection was associated with underweight (adjusted OR: 1.76, 95% CI: 1.63-1.90). One month after treatment, BAZ, WAZ, …

Title 18’S Property Conundrum, Karen E. Woody, Joshua L. Clardy Jan 2025

Title 18’S Property Conundrum, Karen E. Woody, Joshua L. Clardy

Scholarly Articles

“Property,” in legal terms, carries significant weight. Once an object is heralded as “property,” that object becomes a step closer to being afforded the protections of the Constitution, offered equitable remedies at a court’s disposal, or even subjected to taxation by the state or federal government. Defining an object as “property” also puts it within the reach of the Title 18 property fraud statutes. Title 18’s fraud statutes have been often lauded by federal prosecutors for their “extraordinary utility.” In their current iteration, these statutes criminalize schemes to defraud “money,” “property,” and “the intangible right of honest services.” But what …

Kennedy V. Louisiana And The Future Of The Eighth Amendment, Alexandra L. Klein

Scholarly Articles

In 2023, Florida passed a law permitting the imposition of the death penalty for the rape of a child under twelve. Tennessee enacted a similar law in 2024. These laws conflict with Kennedy v. Louisiana, a 2008 decision in which the Supreme Court held that imposing the death penalty for the rape of a child violated the Eighth Amendment’s Cruel and Unusual Punishments Clause because it was inconsistent with the evolving standards of decency. Legislators in Florida and Tennessee have expressed their hope that the Supreme Court will overrule Kennedy v. Louisiana. These laws, which resemble state attempts …

This scoping review examines perspectives on post-secondary STEM education to promote STEM education within Virginia's correctional facilities, assesses programs to improve rehabilitation, reduce recidivism, and address systemic inequalities by developing the scientific potential of incarcerated individuals. The review finds that while STEM education in correctional facilities faces limitations, its potential benefits are being realized nationwide. Virginia has made strides through initiatives like House Bill 2158, which aims to expand higher education access for incarcerated individuals. Examples such as the programs at J. Sargeant Reynolds …

The Employment Effects Of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions During The Covid-19 Pandemic In The United States, Christine Oduor Jan 2025

The Employment Effects Of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions During The Covid-19 Pandemic In The United States, Christine Oduor

Economics Honors Projects

This paper analyzes the impacts of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs) and Economic Support policies on employment across U.S. states during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. It utilizes a Two-Way Fixed Effects estimator to assess the overall impacts of these policies, along with sector-level analysis over different time snapshots to understand the effects on various employment sectors at different time periods, extending to August 2024. The results show that stricter NPIs negatively affected employment, especially in close-contact industries like leisure and hospitality. Business services employment sectors were the least affected and recovered quicker post-pandemic. Economic support policies partially mitigated these effects, with …

Floquet Theory For First-Order Delay Equations And An Application To Height Stabilization Of A Drone’S Flight, Martin Bohner, Alexander Domoshnitsky, Oleg Kupervasser, Alex Sitkin Jan 2025

Floquet Theory For First-Order Delay Equations And An Application To Height Stabilization Of A Drone’S Flight, Martin Bohner, Alexander Domoshnitsky, Oleg Kupervasser, Alex Sitkin

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we proposed a version of the Floquet theory for delay differential equations. We demonstrated that very natural assumptions for control in technical applications can lead us to a one-dimensional fundamental system. This approach allowed researchers to work with classical methods used in the case of ordinary differential equations. On this basis, new original unexpected results on the exponential stability were proposed. For example, in the equation x' (4)+a(t)x(t—-T(7)) = 0, t € [0, co), we avoided the assumption on the smallness of the product sup,j9,.) 41 SUP;< {9,00) TD) < 3/2 for asymptotic stability. We obtained that in the case of w-periodic coefficient and delay, the fact that the period w was situated in a corresponding interval can lead to exponential stability. We then applied our new tests of stability to the stabilization of a drone's flight, where smallness of the noted above product could not be achieved from a technical point of view. For an equation with periodic coefficient and delay, we got a formula of the solution's representation on the semiaxis.

Caves, Calculus, And Climate Change: Measuring And Modeling The Discharge Of Biz Falls In Mammoth Cave National Park, Ava Lich

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Climate change poses a significant global challenge, with increasing levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide as a primary driver of rising temperatures and environmental disruptions. Karst systems, such as those in South-Central Kentucky, play a role in sequestering atmospheric CO₂ through the dissolution of limestone, a process that forms unique landscapes while mitigating climate impacts. This study investigates the discharge dynamics of Cascade River in Great Onyx Cave to enhance understanding of the relationship between hydrology and carbon sequestration in karst environments. A barrel weir equipped with pressure transducers was employed to collect and measure water flow, and Torricelli’s law was …

The Importance Of Pragmatics In The Foreign Language Classroom, Emma Marie Hatsuko Van Ermen Jan 2025

The Importance Of Pragmatics In The Foreign Language Classroom, Emma Marie Hatsuko Van Ermen

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pragmatics has received relatively little attention in language instruction, as it is often regarded as a higher level skill and has only recently gained prominence in linguistic research. This literature review examines the role of pragmatics in foreign language teaching and explores why it is a critical component of language acquisition. First, pragmatics is distinguished from other linguistic branches, such as syntax and semantics, to clarify its unique function in shaping context-dependent communication. Then, the importance of pragmatics in language learning is discussed and the benefits of explicit teaching are highlighted. Finally, common methods for teaching pragmatics such as audio-visual …

Metaphors For Metamorphosis: The Poetics Of Kenosis And The Apophasis Of Self In Saint John Of The Cross, George Faithful

Social Justice | Faculty Scholarship

Spanish mystic Saint Juan (John) of the Cross (1542–1591) began writing poetry while imprisoned by his own monastic order. He developed manuals for contemplation, in part, in the form of commentaries on his principal poems. Their first-person narrators were women who underwent metamorphoses in order to pursue love: one became a dove in her despair; another became flame itself; the last disguised herself as a knight. Juan explained that all three represented the soul that is seeking God. For readers, these metaphors could engender cognitive dissonance, through which they might step outside of themselves and move closer to union with …
