Reducing Discrimination In Organ Transplant Candidacy Evaluation Against Persons Who Use Drugs, Hannah Rahim, Bhsc
Reducing Discrimination In Organ Transplant Candidacy Evaluation Against Persons Who Use Drugs, Hannah Rahim, Bhsc
Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences
Many organ transplant centers deny persons who use drugs eligibility for receiving a transplant because of concerns about the impact of drugs on transplant success. These policies are often not based on sufficient medical evidence and are highly variable between transplant centers. Restricting persons who use drugs from organ transplantation can exacerbate existing racial and geographic inequities in access to organ transplantation. This paper explores discrimination against persons who use drugs in organ transplantation. I examine when considering a patient’s drug use in organ transplant eligibility assessment is illegal and when it is immoral and I offer recommendations for statutory, …

Shortness Of Breath In A 39 Year Old: A Rare Case Of Heart Failure, Mohammed Rashik, Olufunmilola Adeleye, Jason Thompson, Tasaduq Mir
North Texas Research Forum 2025
Currently, 2.6% of Americans suffer from heart failure. Common causes include coronary artery disease, chronic hypertension, arrhythmia, and myocardial infarction, often managed in clinical and hospital settings. A rare cause, however, is infiltrative cardiomyopathy, affecting just 0.04% of the U.S. population. This condition, often caused by amyloid buildup or sarcoidosis, is challenging to diagnose and typically requires a heart transplant due to its rapid progression. Thorough investigations into heart failure causes are crucial to identify this rare condition. A 39-year-old male with no significant medical history presented to the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) Family Medicine clinic …

The Birth Experience During The First Wave Of Covid-19 Lockdown In New York Hospitals: A Qualitative Study, Emily Morse Small M.S.
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
In 2020, alongside the onset of the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic, 209,338 births occurred in New York State (Osterman et al., 2022). While much of the public adjusted to working or learning in a virtual world, many hospitals in New York remained open to treat those in need of care. Women nearing the end of their pregnancy, many of whom felt that they had no other choice, found themselves headed to the hospital—to the labor and delivery unit. Many studies completed outside of the United States on the birth experience during the pandemic found an increase in the likelihood of negative …

Contraceptive Counseling For Transgender & Gender Diverse Patients: Provider Knowledge & Experience, Kathryn Callahan
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Many transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals have contraceptive needs. Contraceptive counseling in this population is often nuanced due to the diverse experiences and healthcare goals of TGD individuals. Testosterone therapy is an important component of gender affirming care for some transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. A common misconception among patients and providers is the role of testosterone in pregnancy prevention. Testosterone is not an effective form of contraception due to its inconsistent suppression of ovulation. Previous studies have shown that some patients who use testosterone for contraception do so based on guidance from their healthcare provider. Therefore, this …

Mass Sars-Cov-2 In A State Correctional System During The Pandemic, Charlotte Kim
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Mass screening has been shown to be more efficient in identifying infections in correctional facilities compared to symptom-based screening, but little is known about the impact of systematic mass screening on timely isolation of infectious cases over the course of the entire pandemic. Between March 2020 and May 2023, the Connecticut Department of Correction (CT DOC) performed a multifaceted SARS-CoV-2 testing strategy for its incarcerated population, which included RT-PCR for mass screening, as well as rapid antigen testing for contact tracing, symptom-based screening, and other miscellaneous reasons. Testing data reveals that mass screening identified 48% of all positive results, whereas …

"Reasonable [Cybersecurity] Measures" For Digital Trade Secrets: Lessons From Marketing, Raj Sachdev
"Reasonable [Cybersecurity] Measures" For Digital Trade Secrets: Lessons From Marketing, Raj Sachdev
Law Faculty Scholarship
The loss of digital trade secrets in marketing and beyond, often the source of competitive advantage, can have disastrous impacts on brands and companies. Bad actors want to get their digital hands on digital trade secrets, and other actors and factors may also cause a risk to their secrecy. The Defend Trade Secrets Act (DTSA) makes clear that “reasonable measures” must be taken to maintain the secrecy of a trade secret. Likewise, the Uniform Trade Secrets Act (UTSA) requires “reasonable steps.” However, in a digital age, the definition of what is “reasonable” is even more unclear than in offline settings. …

Involuntary: How A Lack Of Analysis Of Age Under The Fifth Amendment Highlights The Intersectionality Of Age And Race, Julia De La Fuente, Tonelli Anderson
Washington Law Review Online
In the wake of Miller v. Alabama and its progeny, there has been a wider acceptance that juvenile’s need more protections in our judicial system. This is a result of a growing body of research stating that young people’s brains do not fully develop until the age of twenty-five. States across the country are trying to implement this science to protect juvenile rights, especially when it comes to sentencing. However, it has yet to be incorporated in other respects, such as juveniles relinquishing their Fifth Amendment rights. Little attention has been paid to whether a juvenile’s statement in police custody …

Post-Traumatic Stress Dissorder In Law Enforcement, Todd C. Dearmond
Integrated Studies
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition that has been linked primarily to military personnel. However, first responders experience the same symptoms due to their extended exposure to traumatic events, the stress of the job, and having to make high-risk decisions daily. Symptoms of PTSD include reliving the event, hyper-arousal, and avoidance. These symptoms typically develop over a period of three months but can also take years to emerge after the traumatic event. The treatment and management of PTSD in first responders calls for a multifaceted approach because one treatment style does not fit all personnel. The effectiveness and management …

Preservice Teachers' Perceptions Of Gifted Students' Characteristics And Needs, Courtney Warren
Preservice Teachers' Perceptions Of Gifted Students' Characteristics And Needs, Courtney Warren
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Gifted students possess unique needs that require appropriately challenging opportunities to develop their advanced abilities. To meet these needs, gifted students must be correctly identified, which is often through teacher referral, thus subjecting the identification process to teachers’ knowledge and perceptions of giftedness. Teachers can also implement practices, such as differentiation, to meet gifted needs within their own classrooms. Thus, teachers must hold accurate perceptions of gifted students and their needs. However, teacher preparation programs often offer minimal training in giftedness. The purpose of the current study was to examine preservice teachers’ perceptions of gifted students’ characteristics and needs. Thirty-one …
True Love Stays, Sydney Thier
True Love Stays, Sydney Thier
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
True Love Stays is a love story, albeit an atypical one. Inspired by the bond I have cultivated with my dog, Ava, it explores the nature of relationships with other people and myself. As an essayist and a filmmaker, I was inspired by the way that writers like Jo Ann Beard, Joan Didion, and Leslie Jamison write about love and how Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Alice Birch approach the complexities of identity and relationships on-screen. This collected work is meant to be a multi-genre approach to unpacking how love, desire, and grief interact with identity formation through character-driven writing and an …

Examining The Impact Of A Mobile-Delivered Brief Intervention On Substance Coping Motives Among A Sample Of Interpersonal Trauma Survivors With Heavy Alcohol Use, Lily Milam
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Brief interventions (BIs) aim to reduce risky alcohol use but show limited effectiveness for interpersonal trauma (IPT) survivors, who may use alcohol to cope with trauma-related issues. BIs typically do not target coping-related motivations or include effective emotion regulation strategies, which may improve outcomes for at-risk groups like IPT survivors. Additionally, digital interventions often struggle with low engagement. This study examined a trauma-informed and peer-supported BI to reduce coping-related drinking motives in heavy drinking young adults and assess its effectiveness compared to a standard BI and assessment only condition. Participants (N=133, 79.2% Female, 91.2% White, M age=19.77) with a lifetime …

Expanding On The Relationship Between Incivility And Resource Depletion: Examining Race And Personal Tolerance For Mistreatment As Moderators, Aishwarya Kurmar
Expanding On The Relationship Between Incivility And Resource Depletion: Examining Race And Personal Tolerance For Mistreatment As Moderators, Aishwarya Kurmar
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Workplace incivility is ubiquitous, regularly impacting working adults. Through the framework of Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, I examined the relationship between workplace incivility and resource depletion using daily diary methodology. Workplace incivility negatively impacts employee outcomes at the organizational and individual level. As such, it was hypothesized that workplace incivility would have a positive correlation with increased resource depletion, measured as psychological fatigue. Under selective incivility theory, disenfranchised groups face increased instances of incivility. Following this theory, non-whites were hypothesized to experience a greater association between workplace incivility and resource depletion. Additionally, an individual’s personal tolerance of mistreatment for …

Kettlebell Swings As A Conditioning Activity On Standing Power Throw: Exploring Post-Activation Performance Enhancement In Rotc Cadets, Knik Durman
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) is a neuromuscular phenomenon where high-intensity conditioning activities (CA) temporarily improve explosive performance. While resistance and ballistic exercises are well-studied for PAPE, the effectiveness of kettlebell swings (KBS) in enhancing Standing Power Throw (SPT) performance remains unclear. Given the SPT’s role in the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), identifying effective PAPE strategies could improve ACFT scores. Using a randomized crossover design, this study examined whether KBS before the SPT enhanced throw distance in 19 ROTC cadets (male: n = 17, female: n = 2). Participants completed two conditions: (1) KBS (two sets of five reps with …
