Human Atrial Skinned Muscle Fibers Exhibit Reduced Length-Dependent Activation But Show Faster Force Development Kinetics Than Ventricular Muscle, Alexandre Lewalle, Gregory Milburn, Jania Bell, Kenneth S. Campbell, Steven A. Niederer
Physiology Faculty Publications
In humans, the left atria (LA) and the left ventricle (LV) play distinct physiological roles and express sarcomeric proteins with chamber-specific patterns. Despite these important differences, most multi-chamber descriptions of the heart assume uniform myocardial properties. To facilitate a more accurate representation of cardiac function, we measured and compared the contractile properties of isolated skinned human LA and LV muscle fibers at 37 °C. Our experimental measurements included the length-dependent activation (LDA) of force in the isometric steady state, the force response to small quick length changes, and tension redevelopment dynamics. The LV measurements display more pronounced LDA behavior compared …
From Classroom To Field: Rural Teachers’ Integration Of Science And The Outdoors, Steph N. Dean, Julieanne A. Wenner
From Classroom To Field: Rural Teachers’ Integration Of Science And The Outdoors, Steph N. Dean, Julieanne A. Wenner
Publications
This study explored how rural educators in the US use outdoor environments to enhance science instruction, addressing the educational marginalization of rural students. Using rural cultural wealth as a theoretical framework, we investigated how rural teachers integrate local nature-based resources and students’ out-of-school experiences into science learning. We conducted interviews and observations with rural teachers, using reflexive thematic analysis as our qualitative approach. Three key themes emerged that highlight the ways our participants use the outdoor environment to teach science: (a) harness rural community partnerships, (b) engage students through relational teaching, and (c) design learning opportunities that honor students as …

Slow Education, Sit Spot, And Holistic Well-Being: A Narrative Case Study In Secondary Science Education, Steph Dean, Jim Lane, Paul Bocko, Albert Gilbert, Devan A. Jones
Publications
The demands of a test-dominant education system point towards the need for students to have opportunities for unhurried learning engagements, a movement known as slow education. The purpose of this study was to examine the long-term influence of Sit Spot–a recurrent, structured time to reflect outdoors–on students’ holistic well-being. Using a narrative case study approach, we interviewed a secondary field ecology teacher and seven of his former students to understand the impact of high school Sit Spot experiences during a semester-long science class. Three primary outcomes emerged: (1) enduring impact on the whole person, (2) engagement with affect, and (3) …
Mutual Fund Fees, Stewart L. Brown
Mutual Fund Fees, Stewart L. Brown
William & Mary Business Law Review
Investors pay billions annually in fees for actively managed mutual funds, despite the availability of far superior, cost-effective alternatives like index funds. Mutual funds, with their unique legal structure, insulate management fees from competitive pressures, thereby enabling fund sponsors to maintain high fees. Contrary to the assumption that legal, regulatory, and governance mechanisms adequately protect investors, this Article demonstrates that such safeguards are largely ineffective. The competitive forces that would ordinarily drive fee reductions are rendered impotent by structural conflicts of interest, ineffective regulatory oversight, and the passive role of independent directors. Fund sponsors capitalize on economies of scale, reaping …

From Care To Capital: Rethinking Resilience In The Philippine Labor Export System, Alexa J. Abendano
From Care To Capital: Rethinking Resilience In The Philippine Labor Export System, Alexa J. Abendano
Senior Theses
Global migration has been a defining feature of the neoliberal world economy due to its ability to transform how nations manage care, labor and survival across borders. Within this system, the Philippines stands out as a country that has institutionalized labor migration as a development strategy since the 1970s. This paper examines how the Philippines states labor export policy shapes the vulnerability and resilience of migrant care workers, specifically those employed as domestic helpers in Hong Kong. By drawing on scholarship about global care economies, remittances, precarity, neoliberalism and resilience, this paper analyzes how emotional and reproductive labor are commodified …

Exploring Public Opinions On Mining Governance And Preferences For Interventions To Enhance Battery Mineral Access, Mahelet G. Fikru, Sreeja Koppera, Nhien Nguyen
Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Based on an online survey of 1200 individuals, we examine support for new mining projects in the United States, opinions on mining governance, and preferences for various strategies to access battery minerals. We find support for domestic mining more so at the national (54 % support) than local level (32 % support), with a strong emphasis on environmental protection and multi-level governance. Respondents generally support government intervention to secure access to battery minerals, with over half agreeing with subsidizing electric vehicle (EV) producers and consumers to prioritize the use of domestic minerals in EV batteries. However, there is measurable opposition …
Differential Validity In Fair Lending, Spencer Caro, Talia B. Gillis, Scott Nelson
Differential Validity In Fair Lending, Spencer Caro, Talia B. Gillis, Scott Nelson
Faculty Scholarship
Fair lending’s disparate impact doctrine aims to address lending disparities. But which disparities? Traditional fair lending has narrowly focused on equal outcomes — examining differences in loan approval rates or interest rates. However, this singular focus overlooks other dimensions of disparities that are essential for fair credit access. This article challenges the conventional emphasis on equal outcomes, demonstrating how it has failed to address deep-rooted inequalities in traditional credit allocation while also stifling innovation in machine-learning and alternative data. We argue that disparities in the validity of creditworthiness predictions — the accuracy with which a model identifies creditworthy applicants — …

Physics-Informed Self-Supervised Diagnosis Of Rotating Machinery Using Latent Odes And Transformer Encoders, Md Al Amin, Mohammad Shafat Ahsan, Jannatul Maua, Mumtahina Ahmed, Kamruddin Nur
Student Publications [Scholarly]
This paper proposes a novel Physics-Informed Self-Supervised Diagnosis (PI-SSD) framework for rotating machinery fault detection, combining physical modeling, self-supervised representation learning, and uncertainty-aware classification. The architecture integrates a multi-resolution convolutional encoder, a windowed Transformer for temporal context modeling, and a latent neural ordinary differential equation (ODE) module that embeds mechanical priors, such as Jeffcott rotor dynamics, directly into the learning process. A masked segment reconstruction objective enables self-supervised pretraining using unlabeled healthy signals, while an evidential classifier head produces fault probabilities with calibrated uncertainty. We evaluate PI-SSD on two publicly available datasets, the NASA PHM’09 Gearbox dataset and the Aalto …

Hybrid Server–Ai Architecture For Persistent Generative Game Worlds: Achieving Scalable, Consistent, And Low-Latency Interactive Environments, Jay Ratican, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
Generative artificial intelligence has demonstrated remarkable capabilities in real-time content creation for interactive entertainment, yet current implementations struggle with the persistence, consistency, and scalability demanded by modern multiplayer and long-form gaming environments. This paper presents a hybrid server–AI architecture that fuses the deterministic reliability of authoritative multiplayer server frameworks with the creative flexibility of state-aware generative systems. The proposed three-tier design consists of (1) a deterministic server backend leveraging technologies such as Unity Netcode for GameObjects, Unreal Engine 5’s dedicated servers, and Amazon GameLift to maintain authoritative and persistent world state; (2) a state-aware generative layer responsible for producing real-time …

Despite improvement over the past few decades, particularly for white, cisgender women, intersectional gender-based inequality remains prominent within anthropological archaeology and beyond. Building on critiques of the leaky pipeline metaphor laid out in the introduction to this themed issue, and drawing on Black, Indigenous, and Posthumanist Feminisms, we advocate for a metaphorical shift focused on care, inclusivity, and diversity—that of a garden. The garden metaphor provides a way to express and explore the complex and intertwined ways disciplinary norms, institutions, and individuals structure and shape experiences in archaeology. After reviewing the garden metaphor and summarizing previous suggestions for improving equity …
One Step Forward, Three Steps Back: Picturing Working Men And Women In New Deal Government-Sponsored Art, Gabrielle Wills
One Step Forward, Three Steps Back: Picturing Working Men And Women In New Deal Government-Sponsored Art, Gabrielle Wills
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
The Depression era introduced both unprecedented and reoccurring anxieties that deeply affected average Americans. The question of how to respond aesthetically to major issues of economy, social instability, and an unsure future led artists to follow a canon of popular art that pointed to the idealized solidarity of an American people bonded by an imagined national community. Government-sponsored artists distilled ideals of national identity and unity in their depictions of working men and women, ignoring regional tensions and differences that had once divided the nation into disparate entities.
