Using Relational Database To Effectively Manage And Monitor Institutional Research Activities, Omer Alkelany Nov 2023

Using Relational Database To Effectively Manage And Monitor Institutional Research Activities, Omer Alkelany

Journal of Engineering Research

Abstract- One of the widely used database management systems is based on Relational Databases (RL). Although there are other systems to manage data, such as graph database, hierarchical databased, etc., RL has become popular due to its simplicity and intuitiveness. However, RL has challenges to model some data dependencies such as the well known Many-to-Many (M:M) relationships. This paper demonstrates the use of RL databases to effectively manage and monitor research activities in higher educational institutions. This management simplifies the generation of reports, time trends, and event tables. A comparison between RL and other database management systems is also presented …

Design And Implementation Of A 2.4 Ghz Millimeter Wave Radar System For Soil Water Content Detection, Amr Hussein, Ahmed M. Elkhawaga, Hossam Mohamed Kasem, Mohamed Dabaon Nov 2023

Design And Implementation Of A 2.4 Ghz Millimeter Wave Radar System For Soil Water Content Detection, Amr Hussein, Ahmed M. Elkhawaga, Hossam Mohamed Kasem, Mohamed Dabaon

Journal of Engineering Research

Because water has the highest real permittivity value, close to 80, compared to dry soils' real permittivity, which ranges from 3 to 15, measuring a soil's permittivity is strongly reliant on its moisture content. Furthermore, increased relative permittivity leads to a larger reflectivity coefficient. According to these perspectives, adding water to dry soil generates notable changes in wet soil permittivity and modifies the reflectance and characteristics of incident electromagnetic waves (EMWs) at the soil-air interface. Thus, the soil water content (SWC) may be reliably determined by recording variations in the properties of incident EMWs compared to a reference dry soil …

Evolutionary Conservation And Times Of Action Of Heterochronic Genes, Maria Ivanova Nov 2023

Evolutionary Conservation And Times Of Action Of Heterochronic Genes, Maria Ivanova

Theses and Dissertations

The heterochronic pathway of C. elegans is the most well-characterized system to date for controlling the sequence and timing of developmental events. However, we still have critical unanswered questions to address. First, little is known about the evolution of the heterochronic pathway, and of developmental timing in general. To determine if the roles of major heterochronic genes are conserved, I made mutants in orthologs of these genes in C. briggsae, using CRISPR/Cas9. My studies revealed a significant drift in the roles of some of the genes, although all of them are still involved in the developmental timing regulation, and several …

Back-Imaging Of Pressure-Sensitive Paint To Determine Close Proximity Ground Effects Of Propellers, Jacob Kulig

Honors Theses

The ground effects of propellers have been extensively studied. Although the flow field between a propeller and a ground plate has been theoretically and experimentally analyzed through a variety of methods, there are limitations to the current work, especially in globally analyzing the nature of the flow along the ground plate and unsteady analysis. This study provides a proof of concept that back-imaged pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) can successfully analyze the pressure along such a ground plate. The pressure field was successfully measured utilizing this technique. By analyzing the pressure field in the frequency domain, the unsteady characteristics of the flow …

Micro-Fibrillated Cellulose In Lignin–Phenol–Formaldehyde Adhesives For Plywood Production, Sheikh Ali Ahmed, Reza Hosseinpourpia, Stergios Adamopoulos

Michigan Tech Publications

Petrochemical-based phenol–formaldehyde (PF) adhesives are widely used in plywood production. To substitute phenol in the synthesis of PF adhesives, lignin can be added due to its structural similarity to phenol. Moreover, micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC) can further enhance the bond performance, mechanical properties, and toughness of adhesive systems. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the adhesion performance of lignin–PF (LPF) adhesives reinforced with MFC. In LPF formulations, three levels of MFC (0, 15, and 30 wt% based on the total solid content of adhesives) were added to the homogenous adhesive mixture. Three-layer plywood panels from birch (Betula pendula …

Study Of Si-Gan Photoconductive Switches Operating Modes Using Near-Ir Radiation, Nicolas Eduardo Gonzalez Padilla

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

One of the most promising solid-state devices for fast switching and radio frequency generation applications is the photoconductive switch (PCSS). These devices have been thoroughly explored since the late 1980s and exhibit remarkable switching properties in gallium arsenide (GaAs). With recent advances in wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductor manufacturing processes, there has been an increasing interest in using WBG semiconductors to implement PCSS. WBG semiconductors could exhibit the same switching characteristics as GaAs while overcoming their poor power management and short lifetime under pulsed power conditions, making PCSS a reliable option in high-power applications. Gallium Nitride (GaN) has emerged as one …

Tandem Travel: Reconsidering Road Narratives And Tactics For Subversive Travel, Nicole Emanuel Nov 2023

Tandem Travel: Reconsidering Road Narratives And Tactics For Subversive Travel, Nicole Emanuel

The Goose

Roads are frequently conceptualized as shared spaces that symbolize freedom, despite the fact that they are also tightly monitored sites where laws and public policy hold sway. The fundamental tension between movement on the one hand and restrictive regulation on the other makes the road a particularly paradoxical expression of “the commons.” Another contradictory aspect of roads is that they are often understood as atopic—places that are not really places, but merely a means of conquering time and space to connect a point of origin to a destination. What does it mean to live one’s daily life in such a …

The Goose

This paper, adapted from a talk given for the Institute of the Humanities at Simon Fraser University on April 26 2023, explores intersecting issues taken up by an in-progress long poem I am currently writing. That long poem, “The Middle,” explores questions of climate displacement, migration, and refuge via a writing-though of Dante’s Purgatorio—itself a poem of pilgrimage. A further context for both the poem and the paper about the poem is an ongoing project of walking in solidarity with refugees, asylum seekers, and immigration detainees that the author has been involved with since 2015. In seeking to “override …

On Foot, Dee Hobsbawn-Smith Nov 2023

On Foot, Dee Hobsbawn-Smith

The Goose

“On Foot” is an interdisciplinary examination of the importance of walking and running to the creative life. It is primarily a personal essay braided together with free verse poetry and a small proportion of inquiry into a few famous thinkers and writers who walked regularly. The essay traces a serious foot injury and the effects of that trauma, coupled with the threat of loss of sight, on a writer with a long history of walking and running as part of their creative process. The five poems unspool the sights and sounds of the natural rural world where they walk daily, …

Probability Distributions Arising In Connection With The Inspection Paradox For Bernoulli Trials., James E. Marengo, Anne Marino Himes, W. Cade Reinberger, David L. Farnsworth

Articles

In renewal theory, the Inspection Paradox refers to the fact that an interarrival period in a renewal process which contains a fixed inspection time tends to be longer than one for the corresponding uninspected process. We focus on the paradox for Bernoulli trials. Probability distributions and moments for the lengths of the interarrival periods are derived for the inspected process, and we compare them to those for the uninspected case.

Manipulating And Assaying Chromatin Architecture Around Enhancer Elements In Vivo, John Lawrence Carter Nov 2023

Manipulating And Assaying Chromatin Architecture Around Enhancer Elements In Vivo, John Lawrence Carter

Theses and Dissertations

There are about 20,000 genes in the human genome. The lowly nematode worm, C. elegans, has about the same number of genes. How could two organisms that are so different arise from a similar number of genes? The answer is epigenetics, or the factors that help control when and where genes are expressed. There are many layers that comprise the epigenetic control of genes. One of which is the structure or architecture of chromatin. Chromatin is a complex of DNA and proteins. Histone proteins with DNA wrapped around them form the fundamental component of chromatin, the nucleosome. Chromatin exists in …
