Changes In U.S. Indo-Pacific Military Strategy And U.S. Bases In Okinawa, Clifton W. Sherrill Feb 2025

Changes In U.S. Indo-Pacific Military Strategy And U.S. Bases In Okinawa, Clifton W. Sherrill

Naval War College Review

The U.S. forces based on Okinawa in Japan’s Ryukyu Islands are critical to America’s strategic position in the western Pacific, its defense cooperation with the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, and U.S. security guarantees to Japan itself. Local opposition to hosting those forces and the subsequent uncertainty and consolidation of bases have bearings on that position and demand reevaluation.

Proper Conceptualization Of Naval Operational Doctrine—A Case Study Of The Israeli Navy, Shaul Chorev Feb 2025

Proper Conceptualization Of Naval Operational Doctrine—A Case Study Of The Israeli Navy, Shaul Chorev

Naval War College Review

The character of naval warfare is changing profoundly, and traditional conceptions of victory may no longer apply. Naval warfare requires systematic reconceptualization to ensure that operational doctrine is applicable to the future environment and that navies are tasked with, train to, and are structured for missions they actually are able to accomplish. The Israeli navy’s early successes, more-recent challenges, and current contribution to the ongoing response to the 7 October Hamas attacks are illustrative.

A Forgotten Dimension Of Naval Diplomacy—The Production Of Social Capital In The National Interest, Nell Bennett, Adam Lockyer Feb 2025

A Forgotten Dimension Of Naval Diplomacy—The Production Of Social Capital In The National Interest, Nell Bennett, Adam Lockyer

Naval War College Review

Naval diplomacy is a key noncombat mission for fleets to engage in as they communicate their nations’ broader political objectives. Most literature focuses on how different platforms affect this communication but neglects the social dimension of naval diplomacy and how personal relationships supplement and impact the strategic landscape.

The Systemic Side Of Disinformation: The Reid Technique As Exploitative Knowledge Production, Jayden L. Perez Feb 2025

The Systemic Side Of Disinformation: The Reid Technique As Exploitative Knowledge Production, Jayden L. Perez

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

In this paper, the author analyzes the Reid Technique – the most commonly employed interrogation technique in the United States – to argue that it employs disinformation to reinforce the power and authority of the police while disregarding the harm caused to the individual suspect. Furthermore, the author shows how the Reid Technique reproduces the structural, systemic side of disinformation when false confessions lead to wrongful convictions that codify disinformation as legal precedent. In turn, these wrongful convictions are interpreted as high-quality data that gets incorporated into the fabric of what scholars and members of our society know about crime …

The Effect Of Temperature And Vegetative Substrate On The Short-Distance Dispersal Behavior Of An Invasive Weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) To A Protected Dune Thistle, Alyssa S. Hakes, Tina Czaplinska, Monica Paniagua-Montoya Feb 2025

The Effect Of Temperature And Vegetative Substrate On The Short-Distance Dispersal Behavior Of An Invasive Weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) To A Protected Dune Thistle, Alyssa S. Hakes, Tina Czaplinska, Monica Paniagua-Montoya

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The invasion of a seed-eating weevil, Larinus carlinae (Olivier, 1807) poses a threat to the persistence of native Pitcher's thistle (Cirsium pitcheri), a federally-threatened plant in sand dune communities of the western Great Lakes. At Whitefish Dunes (Sturgeon Bay, WI. USA), seed predation by weevils is higher for thistles surrounded by native marram grass (Ammophila breviligulata) than for those located in sandy habitats. In this study, we observed how the local abiotic and biotic environment affects the short-distance dispersal behavior of L. carlinae. Weevils were captured on site and individually released on the sand approximately …

Juvenile Justice And Delinquency – Reforming A Broken System, Brandie Olson Feb 2025

Juvenile Justice And Delinquency – Reforming A Broken System, Brandie Olson

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership

The juvenile justice system faces significant controversies, primarily concerning accountability and the treatment of young offenders. With rising juvenile crime rates, especially in urban areas like Hennepin County, there is an urgent need for reform. How does the system balance the urgency to hold young offenders accountable while providing the necessary support to foster their rehabilitation? Together, we must explore these challenges to pave the way for a more even-handed and effective juvenile justice system that prioritizes the future of our youth. As legal frameworks intersect with adolescent growth, three key ethical domains emerge: ensuring developmental appropriateness, upholding fair treatment, …

Harm Reduction In Corrections And Improved Treatment Programs, Aliceanne Pegg

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership

The prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C in the United States corrections system is discussed. The importance of implementing harm-reduction strategies to help reduce the spread of bloodborne viruses is described. Also examined are rural communities' barriers to behavioral health and substance use treatment programs. The need for these treatment programs will be defined, and a policy to correct the issue will be proposed. These programs are not without criticism, and the ethics of implementing these programs are often called into question. Ethical considerations of these programs are considered, and an action plan is described to …

Utilization Of Suprathel® In Delayed Surgical Management Of Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (Ten): A Case Report, Isabella Lipkin, Michelle Hughes, W. B. Hughes Md

Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations

Given the lack of established practice guidelines for the management of cutaneous symptoms associated with toxic epidermal necrolysis, treatments range from various dressings to skin substitutes. The following report details a case of a 21-year-old male patient with this diagnosis who presented nine days after rash eruption from an outside hospital with no signs of healing. The patient was then successfully managed surgically eleven days after symptom onset with debridement of epidermal blisters and placement of Suprathel®. To our knowledge, this publication is the first to describe the potential of this synthetic skin substitute in promoting epidermal regeneration for delayed …
