This essay, written for a conference marking the centennial of the Supreme Court’s decisions in Meyer v. Nebraska (1923) and Pierce v. Society of Sisters (1925), suggests that both the ongoing importance and the frustrating elusiveness of these decisions reflect the fact that questions of the formation of persons– as contrasted with matters of the expression or manifestation of personhood– are of crucial importance in the protection of liberty and yet are difficult to grasp and address within constitutional and liberal premises. Pierce v. Society of Sisters and Meyer v. Nebraska were cases about parental rights in general, and parental choice in particular. Both centered on a challenge to a state’s legal effort to reduce or eliminate the educational choices available to parents—in the former, by requiring students to attend public schools, in the latter, by requiring instruction in all schools, public and private, be conducted in English. Pierce and Meyer also were about state efforts to forge a homogeneous American citizenry by limiting the educational choices available to parents. The Supreme Court decisions in Meyer v. Nebraska and Pierce v. Society of Sisters left us a mixed legacy, one part blessing and one part curse. Many would agree on this but differ on which part is blessing and which part curse.

In my view the blessing is the doctrine of substantive due process protecting personal liberty. The Court did not use this language in these cases, but it did rule that the states’ attempts to interfere with parent rights in those cases violated the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and the Court made it clear that in future …

This paper was prepared for a Symposium, held in March 2024, marking the centennial of the Supreme Court’s decisions in Meyer v. Nebraska (1923) and Pierce v. Society of Sisters (1925). At their inception, Meyer and Pierce reflected constitutional principles of economic freedom and parental control of their children’s education. Part I traces the path of ideas put in motion by Meyer and Pierce. These include the decline of their economic freedom component and the broader grounding of their doctrines of parental authority. In 1923 and 1925, respectively, the U.S. Supreme Court rulings in Meyer v. Nebraska and Pierce v. Society of Sisters established limits on the ability of government to constrain what children’s education contains and where it occurs. The Court recognized the “right” of parents to exercise basic control over those things. For a century, the U.S. Supreme Court has provided substantive protection, through the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, to a parent’s liberty interest in directing the education and upbringing of her children. The seminal cases for this protection—Meyer v. Nebraska and Pierce v. Population aging impacts the utilization of health services, especially in Emergency Departments (EDs). A rising share of older adults in the US report ED use, especially frequent ED use, defined as ≥ 4 visits annually. Regular exercise is a practical non-pharmacological approach to maintaining physical and mental health through rehabilitation and prevention of chronic diseases due to its cardiovascular, cardiorespiratory, neurological, and neuromuscular benefits. Despite awareness of the benefits of exercise, a “lack of time” has proven to be the most common impediment to regular activity. Thus, a time-efficient and potentially enjoyable training modality with growing popularity is high-intensity interval training (HIIT). HIIT incorporates intermittent bouts of work and recovery intervals performed at an intensity close to maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max). This researcher embarked on a doctoral journey to study an existential problem impacting the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters in suburban Philadelphia, where he serves as municipal manager. The purpose of the study was to gain insightful answers to the specific problem of volunteer firefighters declining at a seemingly precipitous rate, especially in combination departments where paid and volunteer firefighters must work together to respond to emergencies in a timely manner. This research aims to place Park Field near Millington, TN in its greater historical context for West Tennessee. Mining the existing records archived after the closure of Park Field, Tennessee Council of Defense President Rutledge Smith’s papers, and numerous contemporary West Tennessee newspapers helped create this narrative of transition. On a macro level, World War I and the US Army shaped the region. Job creation and population shifts redefined Memphis, as it did many other southern cities in the era. Oliver Wolcott Jr. (1760-1833) was the nation’s second Treasury Secretary and a key figure on the national stage during the Federalist administrations of Presidents George Washington and John Adams. Upon his resignation from the federal government during the Jeffersonian takeover during the Election of 1800, Wolcott prospered for many years as a private citizen. He was later elected Governor of Connecticut, serving for ten years. This project examines his contributions to both national and state government during his nearly forty years of public service. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a commonly used sweetener in soft drinks and processed foods, and HFCS exacerbates inflammation when consumed in excess. Fructose, a primary component of HFCS; however, it is unclear whether fructose directly activates inflammatory signaling. Growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) is a receptor of the nutrient‐sensing hormone ghrelin. We previously reported that GHSR ablation mitigates HFCS‐induced inflammation in adipose tissue and liver, shifting macrophages toward an anti‐inflammatory spectrum. Simple Summary: There is considerable evidence to suggest that frequent ejaculation reduces the risk of prostate cancer. The more frequently ejaculation occurs without risky sexual behavior, the lower the risk of prostate cancer. The mechanisms regulating the reduction in PCa risk associated with frequent ejaculations are attributed to the suppression of the sympathetic nervous system, resulting in a relief of tension and a slowing of the division of prostate epithelial cells. It is suggested that ejaculation frequency affects gene expression in prostate tissue and subsequently influences the susceptibility of the tissue to tumor formation, leading to a reduction in the …

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a major health concern worldwide. This study focused on survival analysis and the factors influencing survival in infants with critical congenital heart disease (CCHD). A total of 79 infants diagnosed with CCHD were identified, with 48.1% (n=38) exhibiting duct-dependent pulmonary circulation, 35.6% (n=28) exhibiting duct-dependent systemic circulation, 6.3% (n=5) exhibiting critical non-duct-dependent, and 10.2% (n=8) exhibiting parallel circulation issues. Of the infants studied, 55.7% (n=44) were male, 78.5% (n=62) had a gestational age of ≥37 weeks, 62% (n=49) had a birth weight of ≥2,500 grams, 59.5% (n=47) exhibited normal fetal growth, 93.7% (n=74) experienced no …

Mental health issues are a prominent burden among adolescents and young adults in Southeast Asia, compounded by reluctance to seek help and low treatment rates. This mixed-method systematic review analyzed help-seeking profiles (preference, facilitators, and barriers) and evaluated implemented help-seeking programs. Data were sourced from electronic databases, hand-searched local databases, conference proceedings, and grey literature. Study selection followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines, focusing on 1) adolescents (10–19 years) and young adults (18–26 years) in Southeast Asia who were not receiving mental health care, 2) assessing help-seeking behavior, and 3) evaluating programs to increase help-seeking. A solution recommended by the World Health Organization to prevent and control noncommunicable diseases is the Sugar-Sweetened Beverage (SSB) tax. This study aimed to evaluate the Thai SSB tax efficiency affecting the change in post-tax individual-level consumption and find causal explanations for the people’s consumption behavior after the SSB tax was implemented. This study used a Productivity Model, and stratified random sampling was conducted by selecting 1,200 people. An in-depth interview was conducted to seek causal explanations for post-SSB tax consumption behavior with 15 key informants.
