Context. The discovery of quiescent, dark matter (DM)-deficient ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) with overluminous globular clusters (GCs) has challenged galaxy formation models within the Lambda cold dark matter (Λ CDM) cosmological paradigm. Previously, such galaxies were only identified in the NGC 1052 group, raising the possibility that they are the result of unique, group-specific processes, and limiting their broader significance. The recent identification of FCC 224, a putative DM-deficient UDG on the outskirts of the Fornax Cluster, suggests that such galaxies are not confined to the NGC 1052 group but rather represent a broader phenomenon. This work is concerned with the study of explicit solutions for generalized coupled reaction-diffusion and Burgers-type systems with variable coefficients. Including nonlinear models with variable coefficients such as the diffusive Lotka-Volterra model, the Gray-Scott model, the Burgers equations. The equations' integrability (via the explicit formulation of the solutions) is accomplished by using similarity transformations and requiring that the coefficients fulfill a Riccati system. We present traveling wave-type solutions as well as solutions with more complex dynamics and relevant features such as bending. Reinforcement Learning For Aeromedical Evacuation In Nonstationary Combat Environments, Micah J. Kartchner

This research formulates the medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) dispatching problem as a sequential decision process and investigates the application of reinforcement learning under nonstationary conditions. We model the dynamic arrival rate of MEDEVAC requests using a nonstationary Hawkes process and design a Double Deep Q-Network algorithm that incorporates belief states to anticipate future requests. Through computational experimentation, we analyze the impact of belief formulation on decision quality and system performance. Results indicate that policies incorporating belief states significantly outperform myopic dispatching policies, reducing urgent casualty wait times by up to 49.68% and increasing on-time evacuations by up to 21.91%.

This thesis addresses the fragmentation and inefficiencies in current Rendezvous and Proximity Operations (RPO) mission planning by developing an integrated Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) framework. The research explores the design and implementation of RPO missions using System Modeling Language (SysML) and Matlab-based physics simulation to improve mission planning processes. Emojis have become an increasingly important aspect of consumer-brand interactions in the Indian subcontinent. However, the impact of emoji use on brand image and mental health remains underexplored, particularly in emerging economies like India, where structured research on this topic is limited. To address this gap, the present study analyzes over 4,600 consumer tweets related to 19 prominent brands across eleven industries. Using VADER sentiment analysis, the research develops a metric to assess consumer sentiment and brand engagement in relation to emoji usage. The findings indicate that effective integration of emojis contributes to positive consumer sentiment and enhanced brand engagement. …

The analysis of the reasons and circumstances of the detentions of priests from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC MP) in the context of the military conflict shows that these events are a result of the interplay between the threat to Ukraine's national security, violations of religious and civil rights, and external political aspects of the war with Russia. The detentions of UOC MP priests occur due to public calls for cooperation with the occupation forces, the spread of pro-Russian propaganda, the justification of Russian aggression, illegal possession of weapons and ammunition, as well as espionage activities. …

Abstract

This paper employs the oral history method to analyze Jewish conversion during the Holocaust. Between 1938 and 1945, the Slovak Republic was governed by the antisemitic Ľudák regime, whose policies culminated in the deportations of Jews to Nazi death camps. In a society heavily influenced by the Catholic Church, many Jews turned to conversion as a survival strategy. Although most regarded baptism as merely a formal, temporary measure, the decision was not easy, as converting to Christianity meant abandoning Judaism, the Jewish community, and the traditions of their ancestors. J.R.R. Tolkien’s menacing character of Shelob embodies the ultimate danger that faces Frodo on his journey to destroy the Ring of Power. Her actions, in combination with the language that Tolkien uses to describe her, invite the reader to view Shelob with revulsion and horror, designating her as Other. In this study, we report the predation of Hottentotta saulcyi (Simon, 1880) by the insectivorous mammal Hemiechinus auritus (Gmelin, 1770) in Şırnak Province, southeastern Türkiye. During a nighttime field trip, we observed a long-eared hedgehog biting a H. saulcyi individual on its prosoma. This observation confirms that long-eared hedgehogs feed on and prey upon scorpions.

The government cannot punish someone twice for the same offense. But determining whether two crimes are the same offense for double jeopardy purposes can be difficult. New Mexico courts approach this problem in a unique way. In 1991, the New Mexico Supreme Court created a multi-step test for double description cases that largely reflected federal law under Blockburger v. United States. Over time, the supreme court modified and expanded the inquiry. These departures have produced an overly complex analysis that has lost sight of the sole limitation on imposing multiple punishments: legislative intent. For years, the majority of courts have ruled that parents of children with disabilities were required to exhaust special education due process procedures before filing civil actions under other disability statutes. Change would come through Luna Perez v. Sturgis Public Schools. In Luna Perez, a deaf student, Miguel Luna Perez, was denied a free and appropriate education for eleven years. In America’s ongoing discussions regarding religious liberty, situations such as the conflict over New York’s yeshivas demonstrate how grave the stakes can be. Meyer and Pierce advanced the freedom of parents to educate children according to their faith and traditions, but as they relied on substantive due process, they do not offer a firm foundation upon which to build a legal case defending parents who want to enroll their children in yeshivas or similar faith-based schools. Fortunately, recent developments in First Amendment jurisprudence offer a much firmer foundation.

Background: Elevated levels of lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] and diabetes have been identified as potential risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD). This study investigates various Lp(a) levels’ impact on atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) events in pre-diabetics and diabetics.

Methods: We included retrospective studies in English until May 2023, exploring the link between high Lp(a) levels and cardiovascular outcomes in humans with diabetes, prediabetes, or normal glucose levels. Studies were sourced from PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, emphasizing detailed population and outcome data. We excluded studies with major methodological issues, low-quality data, missing key information, duplicates, and non-human subjects. We included high-quality …

Should police officers be able to file tort lawsuits for injuries that they suffer while on duty? In this article, written in response to Professor Sarah L. Swan's The Plaintiff Police, Professors Ellen M. Bublick and Jane R. Bambauer contend that racial equality is not served by complete immunities for civilian misconduct any more than “law and order” is served by complete immunities for police officers who abuse their power. One hundred years ago, in 1925, in a lawsuit brought by parochial and private schools, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously struck down an Oregon state law requiring children to attend only public schools. Two years earlier, in 1923, the Court struck down a state law prohibiting the teaching of foreign languages to young children. The modern interest in the twin cases of Meyer v. Nebraska, and Pierce v. Society of Sisters has sparked a renewed curiosity in the intellectual foundations and current applicability of those two cases. In this instance, I stress less the constitutional underpinnings of the cases in order to focus more on their natural law approach to the parent-child relationship. Based on Lockean principles, I conclude that the standard rules of abuse and neglect offer the sole justification for such intervention, where the state is put to a high standard of proof for intervention. The Education Trilogy cases were important milestones in American constitutional history. They protected private schools, religious and otherwise, from the threat of closure in many states. This preserved educational freedom for parents who preferred private education for their children. As a constitutional matter, the Trilogy became the foundation of a due process jurisprudence that moved beyond liberty of contract, property rights, and police power considerations to a broader protection of fundamental rights.
