Since Congress adopted the Hatch-Waxman Act in 1984, generic drug manufacturers have been able to come to market while certain uses of brand-name drugs are still patented by “carving out” the patented uses from their labeling. For example, suppose a brand-name drug is used to treat both tonsillitis and strep throat, but the drug company has patented only the specific method of using its drug to treat only strep throat. In this scenario, a generic manufacturer can still sell a generic version of the drug, but only for the non-patented use of tonsillitis treatment. To do this, the generic manufacturer …

This project, completed as part of the Honors and VCT Synthesis coursework at Bowling Green State University, focuses on improving the user experience of joining and participating in the university’s intramural sports program. Despite the program's popularity and impact on student life, usability issues within its IMLeagues platform and inconsistent or missing rulebooks have created barriers to entry and engagement. To address these challenges, the project involved the design and development of a standardized, user-friendly set of rulebooks for all intramural sports, a how-to guide for purchasing IM passes, and a quick-reference card for flag football referees. Within what Pope Francis calls “throwaway culture,” everything—non-human and human alike—is perceived according to the dictates of powerful individuals and impersonal analyses and systems. Throwaway culture’s anthropology is both individualist and collectivist. According to throwaway culture’s individualism, the human being is an isolated subject dualistically opposed to the world, engaged with the world through either appropriative consumption or defensive withdrawal. According to its collectivism, the human being is a meaningless object within a collective whole, determined by forces and realities wholly external to it. Inferring Daily Gas Consumption From Multiple Nonuniformly Sampled Billing Cycles With Hierarchical Constraints, Colin O. Quinn

Local natural gas demand forecasting is essential for local distribution companies (LDCs) to optimize resources, maintain efficiency, and meet regulatory requirements. However, inconsistencies arising from nonuniform billing cycles, hierarchical data structures, and aggregated forecasts often degrade accuracy. This dissertation introduces three methodological advancements to address these issues: the Multi-Source Iterative Shifting Disaggregation (ISD) algorithm, Single-Dimension Hierarchical Reconciliation, and Cross-Temporal Hierarchical Forecast Reconciliation. The ISD algorithm disaggregates multiple, overlapping, nonuniformly sampled time series into a coherent high-frequency signal. Unlike existing methods, ISD iteratively refines estimates through constrained load shifting, improving forecast accuracy. Applied to billing cycle data, ISD reduces the Weighted …

This dissertation investigates the problem of violence recognition in surveillance footage using computer vision and machine learning techniques. More specifically, our goal is to achieve interpretable and explainable deep learning models because violence recognition is a sensitive task. We first propose to perform violence recognition using a 3D convolutional neural network through intuitive hyperparameter tuning and transfer learning. We utilize a state-of-the-art 3D model used for general activity recognition that is lightweight and adjustable. Race, ethnicity, and gender significantly impact the wellness of Black collegiate athletes, particularly males. However, the literature on the wellness of collegiate-level student-athletes highlights a lack of diversity in gender and racial/ethnic representation, often overlooking Black student-athletes, who form the second largest group in college sports (Boyd et al., 2017; Elder et al., 2014; NCAA, 2012). Notably, there is an underrepresentation of males (Hinton et al., 2004; Stickler et al., 2022). This dissertation explores the associations between trauma disclosure likelihood, perceptions of positive and negative social reactions to trauma disclosure, trauma impact, trauma type, and posttraumatic growth (PTG). The study aimed to clarify the ability of these variables to predict PTG, with a particular focus on the mediating roles of positive and negative social reactions to trauma disclosure in the relationship between trauma disclosure likelihood and PTG. Using a cross-sectional design, data were gathered from 184 participants recruited primarily through an undergraduate participant pool, as well as through various trauma-related organizations and online forums. Mixed quantum/classical theory (MQCT) was used to study collisional energy transfer between the rotational states of molecules with the focus on reproducing quantum effects related to this process. Namely, rotational energy transfer in the N₂ + O system was studied to replicate quantum interference effects observed as oscillations of scattering cross section as a function of collision energy. Both MQCT code and the full-quantum code MOLSCAT were used for calculations, and results were in excellent agreement with the experiment and the full-quantum infinite-order sudden method from literature. Urbanization has significantly changed the natural cycling of base cations, primarily due to the use of deicer salts, such as sodium chloride, and chemical weathering of limestone and concrete infrastructure. An unintended consequence is the accumulation of salt across urban settings. These base cations, transported mainly by stormwater runoff, accumulate in soils, streams, lakes, and groundwater, posing risks to soil health, water quality, and ecosystems. To mitigate stormwater runoff and pollutants, cities have adopted stormwater best management practices, shifting from traditional gray to hybrid gray-green infrastructure. The Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) phenotype constitutes a group of the most heterogeneous tumors. These tumors are clinically aggressive with poor survival rates, lack targeted therapy, tend to be resistant to chemotherapy, and have a high risk of relapse. They account for 15-25% of the breast cancer cases in tumors of African ancestry, resulting in a 40% higher mortality rate. Mouse Mammary Tumor Virus (MMTV) is a retrovirus known to induce mammary tumors in mice by integrating its genetic material into the host genome. Julian Dodd has criticized Stephen Davies’s widely accepted view of the authentic performance of scored works of Western classical music and proposed a new theory according to which “interpretive authenticity” trumps compliance with the work’s score. I argue that the theories of the nature, meaning, and value of works and performances on which Dodd relies cannot be used to defend his theory. I then argue for an alternative view of authentic work performance that combines the best of Dodd’s and Davies’s ideas: an authentic performance is one that aims to evince understanding of the work through complying fully with its …

Scholars have debated the reach of the President’s power to remove government officers for over one hundred years. This old fight is now suddenly urgent as President Trump asserts far-reaching powers to control the federal bureaucracy and the Supreme Court transforms Unitary Executive Theory into caselaw. The Supreme Court’s recent decision in Trump v. United States has been criticized for its ahistorical approach to presidential immunity. This Essay offers the first account of the historical mismatch between the Trump Court’s decision to immunize presidential removal power and Founding era conceptions of the presidency. Unlike the presumptive immunity that the Court recognized for most other official presidential acts, the immunity afforded for presidential removal power is absolute. This symposium essay suggests that, given an ostensibly originalist Supreme Court, the future depends on getting the past right. The unitary executive theory is approaching its political and doctrinal zenith in 2025, at the very moment it is approaching an evidentiary crisis.
