This study explores the online learning experiences of students with disabilities (SWDs) at a South African university during the pandemic, investigating how institutional policy and AI-supported tools can address their challenges. Phase one used an interpretive qualitative approach involving semi-structured interviews with SWDs to identify key barriers, including inconsistent faculty practices, limited accessibility and emotional isolation. The findings highlight systemic gaps in digital support and the absence of inclusive pedagogical frameworks. Phase two expanded the analysis through a review of documents, focusing on university policies and the potential role of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), in promoting equitable access. …

Universities must actively engage with civil society to reduce inequalities and foster meaningful partnerships. This paper reports on a qualitative case study of a service-learning pilot project conducted in two large Information Systems courses involving over 250 students. Students collaborated in groups with local Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) to apply their theoretical knowledge to solve real-world problems. Data was collected via an online survey containing open-ended reflection questions, yielding 331 quotations from 289 respondents. This data was analysed using a deductive thematic analysis. Since mobile phones are increasingly becoming livelihoods-enablers to people in developing economies, inclusive interaction design are critical. This research on the age inclusivity of feature phones was motivated by some observation that elderly users had challenges with adoption of text messaging. We, therefore, hypothesized that elderly people had challenges with texting ‘cash’, ‘cheque’ or ‘visa’ on a feature phone. The paper investigates if the required agility and interface ergonomics were age discriminatory inhibitors of the adoption of text messaging given the diminishing dexterity and cognitive skills of seniors. This study explores AI development practices to understand how trustworthiness is built into AI systems, and how this generates trust in AI. Through a multi-sited ethnography based methodology, we analyze observations, interviews, and documentation from AI developers working on trustworthy AI. Our analysis shows two key practices: transformation and revelation. Through transformational AI development practices trustworthiness is (re)constituted, though more or lesser degrees. Through revelation practices, AI developers communicatively engage with others to generate trust. Machines are now commonplace work partners and Human-Machine Communication (HMC) is part of modern work. Guided by the machine heuristic and Social Exchange Theory (SET) this paper uses interviews with 22 workers to explore the socio-technical relationships between humans and machines at work. Participants worked with complex machines across a wide variety of industries and roles and findings reveal participants see machines as part of the work ecosystem, develop everyday machine heuristics to guide repeated interactions with machines, and that elements of human uniqueness persist in evaluations of humans and machines. This introduction traces the emergence of Human-Machine Communication (HMC) as a distinct field centered on communication across ontological boundaries. Arguing that HMC is not merely about interacting with machines but about how communicative presence and legitimacy are constituted, the authors introduce the Act–Mean–Relate (AMR) paradigm to conceptualize how machines’ capacity for action, signification, and relation enable communication. This Article aims to clarify the value creation principle and its role in shaping international tax policy that aligns taxation with the location of economic activity. It examines recent developments in international taxation, including aligning taxation with the place of substance, taxing “excess returns” and allocating taxing rights to market jurisdictions, each addressing different aspects of value creation. The Article advocates for a balanced profit allocation method that considers both supply-side and demand-side factors, offering a comprehensive approach to developing a fair and effective international tax framework.

Fighting corporate tax avoidance is not a suitable method to save the integrity of the corporate tax. Rather, more fundamental reform is needed focusing on taxing the individual shareholders at residence. For this purpose, this Article proposes a resident owner-based business income tax (ROBIT).

The ROBIT retains taxation at the entity level but provides for reduced flat tax rates for all business enterprises, taxation only of the rent by introducing an ACE regime, and exemption of inter-company dividends. Empirical literature on judicial decision-making has not yet considered the association between the normative value of fairness and judges’ decisions. Using a sample of tax cases at the Tax Court of Canada (2010–2019) containing 4,420 disputes, we investigate whether a litigant is significantly more likely to obtain a favorable outcome if there is a reference to fairness in the court judgment. Compared to disputes without a mention of fairness in the court judgment, disputes with any mention of fairness have a 51% greater likelihood of a successful outcome. On June 27, 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in Securities and Exchange Commission v. Jarkesy. It held that when the SEC sought a $300,000 civil penalty against Mr. Jarkesy for securities fraud, the Seventh Amendment entitled him to a jury trial in an Article III court. The week before, the Tax Court, an Article I court, issued a decision upholding the IRS’s imposition of a $6.3 million civil penalty against a taxpayer for tax fraud. No jury was available. This study discusses the moral legitimacy of constitutional adjudication in general, with a particular focus on the Indonesian Constitutional Court. Moral legitimacy is crucial as it justifies the necessity of Constitutional Court—not merely because of its existence is stipulated by the 1945 Constitution. This issue is also discussed in response to the legislature’s (the People’s Representative Council) adverse reactions to the Constitutional Court, including efforts to weaken its authority. Additionally, moral legitimacy is also related to the well-known critique of constitutional adjudication: the counter-majoritarian difficulty.
