New Judicial Federalism And The Establishment Clause: Classroom Ten Commandments As A Case Study In State Constitutional Protection, Caroline Mala Corbin Nov 2025

New Judicial Federalism And The Establishment Clause: Classroom Ten Commandments As A Case Study In State Constitutional Protection, Caroline Mala Corbin

Articles

Louisiana recently enacted a law requiring a Ten Commandments display in every public school classroom from kindergarten to college. Forty-five years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a nearly identical attempt to introduce Christianity into the public schools violated the Establishment Clause—the clause in the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment that requires some degree of separation between church and state.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Supreme Court has since reduced the Establishment Clause to a shadow of its former self. It replaced doctrinal tests that protected religious minorities with a history and tradition test that is easily manipulated and that presumes the …

The measurements were repeated after a 20-week controlled endurance exercise program. A substudy involving 78 participants from 19 ED families was used to evaluate associations between skeletal muscle traits and variations in ME. An increase in ME of …

Modernizing Family Courts: How Technology-Driven Triage Improves Access To Justice For Self- Represented Litigants And Enhances Efficiency For Lawyers, Ayyoub Ajmi, Alicia Davis Nov 2025

Modernizing Family Courts: How Technology-Driven Triage Improves Access To Justice For Self- Represented Litigants And Enhances Efficiency For Lawyers, Ayyoub Ajmi, Alicia Davis

Faculty Works

Family courts are overwhelmed by rising caseloads, increasing parental conflict, and limited judicial resources. With 80–90% of litigants self-represented (SRLs), case delays and inefficiencies affect all parties, including those with private counsel. High-conflict cases make up 10–30% of dockets, consuming judicial time and worsening outcomes for families, especially children. This article explores the Family Court Services Portal, a technology-driven triage tool designed to streamline family case processing, improve access to justice, and help courts allocate re- sources effectively. The portal integrates pre-screening triage automation, guiding parties through structured issue identification to support proportional judicial intervention and informed case management. Developed …

Necessity In Free Exercise, Brady Earley Nov 2025

Necessity In Free Exercise, Brady Earley

University of Chicago Law Review

The Free Exercise Clause is a broadly worded constitutional prohibition against government intrusion on religious exercise. To construct limits, courts have consistently required government officials to demonstrate the necessity of state action burdening religion. Yet government officials regularly fail to produce evidence of necessity, leaving judges to intuit or assume whether necessity exists. This Comment offers a better way. Using a method known as difference-in-differences (DiD), lawmakers can draw upon the experience of existing state laws to enact laws justified with evidence. This Comment demonstrates the value of DiD with a current free exercise controversy involving the Old Order Amish …

The Victims’ Rights Mismatch, Lee Kovarsky Nov 2025

The Victims’ Rights Mismatch, Lee Kovarsky

Michigan Law Review

A puzzling mismatch lurks inside victims’ rights law. Victims’ rights are most easily justified when held by living victims, but the cultural movement has triumphed largely as a response to crime-caused death. This Article identifies the mismatch between victims’ rights and their justifications in dead-victim cases, analyzes the normative questions involved, and recommends an institutional response. The mismatch persists because American jurisdictions assign a single bundle of rights to all people denominated as “victims.” In dead-victim cases, however, the primary bearers of interpersonal harm are gone. Instead, their rights are assumed by aggrieved family members and legal estates. In those …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

A woman in her fourth decade of life with metastatic ectopic Cushing syndrome due to a thymic neuroendocrine tumor developed an acute adrenocorticotropin (ACTH)-mediated hypercortisolemic crisis 5 days after initiating lutetium-177-labeled DOTA-[Tyr3]-octreotate (177Lu-DOTATATE) peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT). She presented with hypertension, rapid weight gain (8 kg in a week), psychosis, and biochemical evidence of severe hypercortisolism: serum cortisol: 141 µg/dL (SI: 3889.7 nmol/L) (reference range, 5-25 µg/dL [SI: 137.9-689.7 nmol/L]), plasma ACTH greater than 2000 pg/mL (SI >440.4 pmol/L) (reference range, 10-60 pg/mL [SI: 2.2-13.3 pmol/L]), potassium: 3.4 mEq/L (reference range, 3.5-5.0 mEq/L). Low-dose intravenous etomidate (0.02 mg/kg/h) was …

Direct-In-Nod Genetic Ablation Of Bcl3 Leads To Complete Type 1 Diabetes Protection., Jeremy Racine, Jennifer R Dwyer, Harold D Chapman, Amy Bell, Raymond F. Robledo, David V. Serreze Nov 2025

Direct-In-Nod Genetic Ablation Of Bcl3 Leads To Complete Type 1 Diabetes Protection., Jeremy Racine, Jennifer R Dwyer, Harold D Chapman, Amy Bell, Raymond F. Robledo, David V. Serreze

Faculty Research 2025

It was previously reported that genetic ablation of the NF-κB atypical inhibitor Bcl3 through congenic introduction of a 129P2-embryo derived knockout allele (Bcl3tm1Ver) accelerated autoimmune diabetes in the NOD mouse model. Conversely, we found that direct CRISPR-mediated ablation of this gene in the NOD/ShiLtDvs substrain completely inhibited diabetes development. Our CRISPR approach excised exons 3-7 within the NOD Bcl3 gene. These new NOD-Bcl3-/- mice had very low levels of insulitis, indicating protective mechanisms elicited early in the disease process. Dissimilar to reports of Bcl3 ablation in nonautoimmune C57BL/6-background mice, we found that splenic and lymph node B cells were not …

From Human To Mouse And Back Again: Genetic And Genomic Ta(I)Les Of Islet Dysfunction In Type 2 Diabetes., Romy Kursawe, Khushdeep Bandesh, Sai Nivedita Krishnan, Kevin S Liu, Redwan M Bhuiyan, Michael L. Stitzel

Faculty Research 2025

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a complex genetic disease with substantial environmental inputs leading to glucose homeostasis defects. Insulin production is central to proper glucose control, and islet cell dysfunction and death lie at the nexus of T2D genetics and pathophysiology. Comprehensive identification of genes and pathways contributing to these processes is essential for mechanistic understanding and therapeutic targeting. Here, we summarize the latest human and mouse T2D genetic and genomic studies and assess how these parallel variant-to-function efforts and associated data contribute convergent or complementary insights and new opportunities to dissect T2D islet (dys)function. We distill mechanistic and phenotypic …

Rapid Changes In Cholinergic Signaling, Myelination, And Thyroid Signaling Pathway Gene Expression In Amygdala Subnuclei In Response To Social Status Maintenance And Reorganization., Tyler M Milewski, Won Lee, Köll R Rada, James P Curley Nov 2025

Rapid Changes In Cholinergic Signaling, Myelination, And Thyroid Signaling Pathway Gene Expression In Amygdala Subnuclei In Response To Social Status Maintenance And Reorganization., Tyler M Milewski, Won Lee, Köll R Rada, James P Curley

Faculty Research 2025

Male CD-1 mice form linear social hierarchies and can rapidly reform them following social reorganization. Through tag-based sequencing in the medial amygdala (MeA), we identified several genes regulating cholinergic signaling, myelination, and thyroid signaling that rapidly shift expression 70 min after animals change social status. Here, we further characterize the expression patterns of individual genes within these pathways in both stable and reorganized hierarchies. We find that genes related to cholinergic signaling show higher expression in the MeA of dominant males in stable hierarchies as well as when reestablishing dominance in reorganized hierarchies. Dominant males also show higher levels of …

A Comparison Of Inadequate Doctrines: The Canadian “Honour Of The Crown” And The U.S. Federal Trust Responsibility, Jennifer Pahre, Cara Shanahan, Emma Troy, Brooke Conklin Nov 2025

A Comparison Of Inadequate Doctrines: The Canadian “Honour Of The Crown” And The U.S. Federal Trust Responsibility, Jennifer Pahre, Cara Shanahan, Emma Troy, Brooke Conklin

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

This article critically examines and compares the Canadian doctrine of the "honour of the Crown" and the United States' federal trust responsibility as legal frameworks intended to protect the rights and interests of Indigenous peoples. Through historical and doctrinal analysis, the authors argue that both doctrines, while rooted in fiduciary ideals, have been reinterpreted by courts and policymakers in ways that prioritize governmental interests over those of Indigenous communities. The U.S. trust responsibility, once grounded in treaty obligations and sovereign-to-sovereign relations, has devolved into a vague, largely unenforceable moral and legal obligation, allowing for unilateral federal and state action that …

Adopting new teaching and learning methods to improve learning outcomes is a critical concern in contemporary education. In line with this, the Makerspace movement, accompanied by Design Thinking, is being ingrained into teacher education as a strategy to enhance the performance of teacher educators and the quality of pre-service teachers. Borrowing from constructivism theory, Makerspaces provide opportunities for tutors, student teachers, and school learners to develop artifacts that aid and demonstrate their learning. This paper examines how Makerspace materials might be incorporated into teacher education and school classrooms, emphasizing strategies, empirical findings, and actionable recommendations derived from a study across …

Analysis And Simulation Of The Effect Of Voids In Dually Reinforced Particle And Short Fiber Composites, Matthew Mckinley Luci Nov 2025

Analysis And Simulation Of The Effect Of Voids In Dually Reinforced Particle And Short Fiber Composites, Matthew Mckinley Luci

Graduate Theses - Mechanical Engineering

This thesis investigates dual-reinforced polymer composites tailored for flywheel energy storage, combining short, chopped carbon fibers for load bearing with iron particulates for multifunctionality. A unified experimental–computational workflow was developed: tensile coupons were fabricated and tested, machine compliance was quantified using neat resin and removed from all curves, and elastic moduli were extracted with robust MATLAB routines. Parallel finite-element models in ANSYS 2023R reproduced the dog-bone geometry with standardized meshing, named selections, and displacement-controlled loading. Four material states—neat resin, resin and iron, resin and short carbon fiber, and the iron and fiber hybrid— were evaluated. Results show carbon fibers dominate …

Rico V. United States, Meagan R. Hurley Nov 2025

Rico V. United States, Meagan R. Hurley

Articles

Isabel Rico was serving a term of supervised release when she absconded from federal supervision. Years later, the government sought to revoke her release, arguing that her fugitive status “tolled” her supervised-release term. The Ninth Circuit agreed. Other circuits, however, have rejected the fugitive-tolling doctrine in the supervised-release context. The Supreme Court will now decide whether federal courts may judicially adopt fugitive tolling, or whether Congress’s silence in the supervised-release statute forecloses it.

Scaling Up Cooperative Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning, Minghong Geng Nov 2025

Scaling Up Cooperative Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning, Minghong Geng

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Multi-agent systems (MAS) involve multiple autonomous agents that coordinate their actions to achieve shared or competing objectives in dynamic environments. Over the past decade, multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) has emerged as a powerful paradigm for enabling collaborative behaviors among autonomous agents within MAS to solve complex tasks. This dissertation discusses a critical scalability gap that exists between current MARL capabilities and real-world deployment requirements. Most existing MARL research focuses on small-scale laboratory problems, often struggling to coordinate large agent populations and facing challenges with extended decision-making horizons. In contrast, many real-world applications demand coordination among hundreds or thousands of agents …

Prior Experience And State Legislative Effectiveness, Eric R. Hansen, Sarah A. Treul Nov 2025

Prior Experience And State Legislative Effectiveness, Eric R. Hansen, Sarah A. Treul

Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

How do the prior experiences of lawmakers shape their performance in office? Representatives who have held prior elected office or professional backgrounds in relevant fields—specifically law, government, or politics—seem to have an advantage in winning elections. It is unclear whether those experiences help them become more effective legislators. Using a variety of data sources, we assess whether lawmakers with relevant prior experiences are more effective in advancing bills in the 50 state legislatures. We find mixed results. We find that state senators are more effective than their colleagues if they first served in the state house, but that prior local …

Is There An “I” In Team?: Racial And Gender Differences In Interdependent Teamwork, Lucy Z. Bencharit, Cade R. Creason, Julia Lee Cunningham, Isabella V. Gasparyan, Dia Dhariwal, Hazel R. Markus

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The popular adage “There's no ‘I’ in team" aims to encourage Americans to place the team’s needs ahead of their individual goals, which research shows is essential to effective team functioning (Wageman et al., 2012). However, do Americans actually follow this recommendation in practice? Decades of research in cultural psychology has consistently shown that our cultural contexts (e.g., race, gender, and nation of origin) thoroughly influence the degree to which individuals hold independent (i.e., focus on one’s unique goals and preferences) and/or interdependent (i.e., focus on the needs of others and the environment) models of self and personhood (Markus & …

Composition Pedagogy As Ai‑Native Coding: From Design Kit To Scholarly Framework, Daniel Plate, James Hutson Nov 2025

Composition Pedagogy As Ai‑Native Coding: From Design Kit To Scholarly Framework, Daniel Plate, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This article advances a field-ready framework that reconceives first-year composition as AI-native coding, translating a complete “design kit” into scholarly method, evaluative protocol, and curriculum architecture. Background: Contemporary composition pedagogy emphasizes process, genre awareness, and collaborative revision; meanwhile, modern software practice operationalizes iteration through version control, test-driven development, and continuous integration. The uploaded kit demonstrates that these cultures are isomorphic: writing stages align with SDLC phases, and automated pipelines can lint prose, execute argument “tests,” and publish artifacts with auditable histories. Approach: The study systematizes that kit into (1) a conceptual map that recasts authorship as orchestration and verification, (2) …

Experimental Investigation: Performance Of Ranque–Hilsch Vortex Tubes Under Various Surface Boundary Conditions, Ahmad Al-Najjar

Theses

The Ranque–Hilsch vortex tube (RHVT) is a passive thermofluid device that splits compressed gas into simultaneous cold and hot streams through strong swirling flow inside a slender tube, without moving parts. This study experimentally examines how external boundary conditions applied to the tube wall influence RHVT performance. Three wall conditions were imposed: (i) externally cooled (cooling), (ii) externally heated (heating), and (iii) adiabatic (insulated). Tests were conducted with air over an inlet pressure range of 2–6 bar. The primary objective was to understand the extent to which wall thermal condition modifies temperature separation and energy efficiency. Performance was quantified using …
