Facial movement delivers rich emotional messages. This pictorial explores a novel concept in enhancing expressive facial communication – the Internal Facial Contour (IFC). The IFC device constructs a linear visual language on the face through a collection of face-worn wearables. These wearable augmentations deform in response to facial muscle movement, thereby suggesting emotional states. The shape of the IFC device naturally becomes visually wider and more open when smiling; in contrast, it becomes narrower and more closed when frowning. This study explores how accommodation can enhance travelers’ local experiences through product- service combinations. While prior research has focused on local immersion during sightseeing, little attention has been paid to how lodging environments support such experiences. To address this gap, in-depth interviews were conducted with millennial travelers (aged 20–39) who had repeatedly booked international accommodations. Using personal inventories and semi-structured interviews, the study identified products and moments that enriched emotional and cultural engagement. Thematic analysis revealed four key themes—Accommodation, Local Experiences, Products, and Emotion—highlighting how design elements in accommodations influence travelers’ emotional continuity. Addressing this gap, this study investigates the evolution of "object-space" order in domestic environments through an integrated approach combining computer vision technology and natural language processing. We present Squeeze Machine, an experimental interactive experience, aiming for a critical-heritage exhibition at MUNCH museum. Our design process weaved together three research threads: (1) designing embodied interaction for critical heritage, (2) using uncomfortable interaction, and (3) facilitating critical reflection focusing on social beliefs of authority. We conducted interaction tests at a university laboratory (N=16, 8 pairs). Participant responses illustrate that Squeeze Machine could evoke visitors to reflect on their personal experience, increase visitor curiosity about the exhibition and support reflection on curated artefacts. The exploration also brought out some challenges for applying discomfort through control in an exhibition context.

We proposed the design of a 4D digital viewing system for archiving the embodied creation process of Ikebana. Using twenty-two synchronized fixed cameras and a grasses type eye tracker, our system captures full-body motion, the evolving flower arrangements, and gaze behavior. Camera poses are estimated with COLMAP, and each video frame is independently reconstructed using 3D Gaussian Splatting, resulting in a space-time sequence that can be interactively viewed from arbitrary angles. This frame-wise reconstruction strategy lowers computational load and avoids temporal drift, enabling long-duration recordings on moderate hardware while maintaining spatial coherence. Economic factors play a key role in determining fertility and the number of abortions performed. Using detailed county-level data from Pennsylvania, we used fixed-effects analysis to examine how changes in these economic factors are related to the number of abortions. Our most robust estimate suggests that each percentage point increase in the poverty rate is associated with approximately 5 additional abortions per 1000 live births, but that increases in college education rates are associated with a decline in abortions. We also offer some preliminary evidence on the effects of partisanship, religiosity and proximity to an abortion clinic.

Strip and body-cavity searches are among the most egregious invasions of personal privacy that the government can impose. The Fourth Amendment, as interpreted by the Supreme Court, demands that courts thoroughly analyze these searches. Courts must consider not only the suspicion that warranted the search, but the way the search was performed. But in the prison visitor context, U.S. Courts of Appeals have not done so. Instead of evaluating whether the search in question was conducted reasonably, including reasonableness in scope, courts have considered only whether prison officials possessed reasonable suspicion. We examine the impact of extreme hydrogeological events on local governments’ fiscal responses in Italy between 2016 and 2022, with a focus on how local public finances contribute to disaster resilience. Leveraging the staggered timing of disaster declarations and employing a difference-in-differences framework, we estimate dynamic treatment effects on revenue and expenditure of municipal governments. Our findings indicate that local governments of affected municipalities significantly increase total and capital expenditures in the aftermath of disasters, particularly in functions related to emergency management, environmental protection and economic development.
