From Tools To Actors: Understanding Non-Human Agencies In Intergenerational Interaction Design For Older Adults, Chen Li, Song Xu
From Tools To Actors: Understanding Non-Human Agencies In Intergenerational Interaction Design For Older Adults, Chen Li, Song Xu
IASDR Conference Series
This study adopts Actor-Network Theory (ANT) to examine how non-human actors exercise agency in intergenerational interaction design. Moving beyond the notion of gerontechnology technology as passive tools, we frame these technologies as active participants in shaping intergenerational connections. Through case-based analysis and material ethnography, we analyzed four design projects—Harmony Makers, CampChess, XiangqiMate, and SereniTea House. By systematically coding design documents, interviews, and user interaction videos, we identified five dimensions of non-human agency: Interaction Triggering, Relationship Coordination, Emotional Modulation, Cultural Invocation, and Identity Positioning. These dimensions highlight the distributed and relational nature of agency within intergenerational settings, where non-human actors not …

The findings reveal that these platforms …
The Paradigm Shift Of Inclusive Design, Ying Jiang, Ye Zhou
The Paradigm Shift Of Inclusive Design, Ying Jiang, Ye Zhou
IASDR Conference Series
Inclusive design has emerged as a vital concept under the orientation of "human-centered" approaches. With the growing imperative of sustainable development, the scope of inclusive design has gradually expanded into a broader framework of "humanity-centered" practices. From a relational perspective, inclusive design can be understood through four paradigmatic dimensions: the relationship between humans and products, between humans and others, between humans and the environment, and between humans and themselves. On one hand, human-centered inclusive design primarily focuses on the relationship between people and products, and interpersonal care, emphasizing how design products meet human needs and how individuals engage in collaboration …

From Body To Interface: Co-Design Gesture-Based Interactions With Experts For Immersive Experiences, Zixiao Liu, Shuo Yan, Haiyan Jiang, Fengyi Yan, Henry Been-Lirn Duh
IASDR Conference Series
This paper presents an expert-driven co-design process for defining gesture-based interactions in immersive environments. Existing co-design methods often struggles with expressing abstract design elements, reaching consensus among diverse users, and translating qualitative feedback into actionable outcomes. We propose a four-stage co-design process for improving gesture-based interaction design, consisting of data collection, co-design session, expert discussion, and design decision-making, which integrates expert knowledge with embodied practice. We developed this co-design framework and apply it to a foot-based interaction project exploring habitual foot actions as natural inputs for virtual- physical switching experience. Through collaborative sessions, experts defined and evaluated appropriate foot gestures …

History Drives Recall And Exploration: Human-Ai Collaboration In The Design Of Memory Aid Recommendation Systems, Jiaxin Jiang, Ziyun Tang
IASDR Conference Series
With the global rise of social media platforms, algorithm-driven recommendation systems have improved the relevance of content suggestions but have also introduced issues such as “filter bubbles,” a diminished sense of user control, and barriers to exploration. Most existing studies focus on optimizing algorithms, paying less attention to how users interact with these systems. To address this gap, we conducted an exploratory user survey (N = 30) and identified three core pain points: low utilization of history features, a lack of effective interest-management tools, and obstacles to discovering new content. Drawing on theories of human–AI collaboration and distributed cognition, we …

When Product Use Meets The Future: Proleptic Experiences And Narrative-Based Design Research, Po-Chuan Chen
IASDR Conference Series
This study explores how users mentally and emotionally project product experiences into the future through narrative-based accounts. Building on the concept of prolepsis—a narrative technique that introduces future events into present discourse—this research investigates how users articulate anticipatory product experiences that reflect both emotional states and temporal orientations. A four- phase research methodology was employed, consisting of Survey, Quantification, Categorization, and Interpretation. A total of 22 narrative examples of proleptic product experiences were collected and analyzed. Through content analysis and multidimensional scaling (MDS), two interpretive axes were identified: emotional orientation (Anticipation vs. Concern) and temporal specificity (Clear Time vs. Ambiguous …

From Scroll To Space: Reimagining The Spatial Order Of Chinese Landscape Painting In Vr, Mengyu Chen, Yan Dong, Qi Li, Wu Qiong, Shihan Qiu, Lanxi Xiao
IASDR Conference Series
Traditional Chinese landscape painting constructs spatial depth through scattered perspective and shifting viewpoints, enabling a layered, rhythmic experience of wandering the scroll. This spatial logic differs fundamentally from linear perspective and poses unique challenges for immersive translation. While VR offers new potentials for experiencing cultural heritage, most VR-based landscape reconstructions remain image-centric, lacking engagement with compositional and narrative structures inherent to the scroll format. This study investigates how the multi-layered spatial order and the rhythmically guided narrative of Chinese landscape painting can be reimagined in VR. Taking Early Spring as a core case, we propose a design framework integrating spatial …

IASDR Conference Series
At present, the protection of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) has entered the stage of systematic protection. The National Eco-Cultural Protection Zones (NECPs), first created by China, are an important model for protecting ICH in the social-natural-cultural ecosystem. However, their sustainable development faces continuous systematic challenges: (1) Intergenerational Transmission Fracture and Policy Misalignment (aging inheritors, youth out-migration, misaligned policies); (2) Digital Activation Gap (static digital archives failing to drive innovation); and (3) Fragile Protection Ecosystem (fiscal dependency, product homogenization, weak market competitiveness). Tobreakthis vicious cycle, we propose a novel Design-Driven Multi-stakeholder Collaborative Co-creation Governance Framework. Its core innovation elevates digital technology …

This study explores a service design model for elderly wellness tourism in Taiwan through the lens of well-being. Amidst rapid population aging in Asia, particularly in Chinese societies, wellness tourism is gaining relevance for promoting seniors’ physical and mental health. Beyond providing relaxation, such experiences can alleviate chronic conditions and serve as a means for intergenerational bonding and expressions of filial piety. While previous research has examined the link between wellness tourism and well-being, gaps remain in understanding elderly users’ perspectives within specific cultural contexts. To address this gap, the study adopts a well-being framework—integrating both hedonic and eudaimonic dimensions—to …
Making Meaning Manifest: Communication And Relevance In Design Thinking, Luke Feast
Making Meaning Manifest: Communication And Relevance In Design Thinking, Luke Feast
IASDR Conference Series
This paper examines communication in design thinking, drawing on Sperber and Wilson's Relevance Theory as an alternative to the prevailing information-processing model. While design thinking is commonly framed as problem-solving, we propose that designed artefacts function as ostensive stimuli that guide users' inferential processes rather than encoding fixed meanings. The ostensive-inferential model reveals how designers communicate through intentions, where users actively infer meaning based on evidence, context, and relevance. This framework explains complex communicative phenomena, including affordances, metaphors, cross-cultural design considerations, and ethical dimensions of design practice. This perspective has significant implications for design thinking education and practice, emphasising communication …

Developing Publics In Companies Through Infrastructuring For Data-Driven Workplaces In Japan, Masako Kitazaki, Riichiro Take, Ryoko Koborita, Yuichi Nakamura
IASDR Conference Series
This study investigates how the participatory design concept of infra structuring and the formation of a public manifests differently in Japanese workplaces under data-driven management. Building on recognized pillars for public formation—incorporation of authority, development of attachment, and cultivation of ownership—we explore how these elements are shaped by Japan's unique organizational and cultural dynamics. Although employees in Japan express concerns about data use in the workplace, such as potential increases in bias, discrimination, deskilling, and unsafe practices, these anxieties rarely lead to open discussion or collective action. We argue that socio cultural factors, including a deep-rooted emphasis on harmony and …

Sensing Soil Habitability: Relational Data For Multispecies Attunement, Diya Samit, Mathias Funk, Bahareh Barati
IASDR Conference Series
Design research increasingly engages with ecological complexity through the emerging bodies of More- than-Human design (MtHD) and biodesign. While these fields share topical concerns, they differ in their onto-epistemological orientations, particularly in how they employ data. Biodesign often harnesses data to engineer novel functions in living systems, whereas MtHD emphasizes relationality, care, and designing with other-than-humans. Despite growing interest in bridging these perspectives, data practices at their intersection remain predominantly representational or oriented towards instrumental control. This paper responds to calls for rethinking data by introducing Soil Habitability as both a conceptual and methodological lens, grounded in an exploratory research-through-design …

IASDR Conference Series
As global environmental challenges intensify, sustainable human-computer interaction (SHCI) research has gained increasing importance. Eco-feedback technology, which monitors and provides feedback on individuals' environmental impact, plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable behaviors. However, existing eco-feedback mechanisms exhibit significant limitations, including monotonous feedback formats and content, lack of fine-grained perception of individual energy behaviors and personalized feedback, and inadequate integration of multi-source energy information for real-time targeted responses. These limitations result in users' vague understanding of their energy consumption patterns and difficulty translating energy conservation awareness into concrete actions. This problem is particularly pronounced in office environments where users typically …
