Jane, a 32-year-old individual, is facing federal criminal charges for an alleged white-collar offense that has a maximum punishment of one year in prison. On March 1, 2019, the court decides to assess Jane’s mental competency to stand trial due to concerns raised in the initial proceedings. The court, relying on the standards set forth by the United States Supreme Court,1 initiates a hearing to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to warrant a mental competency evaluation. After the competency hearing, the court concludes that there is a need for such a mental evaluation. Jane is then sent for an initial …

This review highlights the economic aspects of Egyptian fisheries and their impact on fishing communities. Local fish production increased by about 46% between 2012 and 2021, yet consumption demand continues to outpace supply, creating a food gap that is filled through imports. Fish imports peaked in 2019 at around 506 thousand tons, putting pressure on Egypt’s trade balance. Fish is a key dietary component for Egyptians, offering a relatively affordable source of protein compared to red meat and poultry. However, production from natural fisheries (seas, lakes, and the Nile) faces numerous challenges such as overfishing, pollution, weak management, and environmental …

The Second Council of Constantinople in 553, recognized by many Christian traditions as the fifth ecumenical council, represents a pivotal moment in the development and articulation of the Church’s understanding of the central mystery of her faith, that of the Incarnation of the Word of God who is Jesus Christ. Constantinople II provides a clarification of the symmetrical statement of Christology produced at the Council of Chalcedon in 451 by reading it in continuity with the preceding conciliar tradition, especially the Council of Ephesus in 431, and by retrieving neglected tenets of Cyril of Alexandria’s more asymmetrical account of Christology, …

From Collision To Coexistence: Data-Driven Approaches To Reducing Wildlife Rehabilitation Center Intakes, Alice Anastos

This project investigates the primary anthropogenic drivers of wildlife admissions at Lake Erie Nature and Science Center using a quantitative analysis of 10,172 intake records from the WILD-ONe database. Window collisions were by far the leading cause of admission, accounting for 54% of all intakes. Orphaning represented 12%, followed by vehicle collisions (5%) and domestic cat attacks (4%). By integrating findings from current wildlife rehabilitation research, this study identifies evidence-based strategies, such as bird-safe window treatments, public education on natural animal behavior, and targeted urban planning, that can substantially reduce preventable injuries. Objective: to study issues related to the lawyer and client interaction regarding building a legal position on the case and the plea process.Methods: the article uses the universal dialectical method of cognition, as well as general (analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction) and specific scientific research methods (formal-legal method).Results: As the United States has shifted to “a system of pleas,” the role of defense attorneys has swung from trial litigator to plea negotiator. The study results indicated that defense attorneys spend a significant amount of time meeting with clients. When rivers achieve a great enough flow rate, sediment along their riverbed becomes mobilized and transported downstream. This process is known as bedload transport. As bedload transport initiates, micro-collisions of various sediments and gravel generate underwater acoustic signals that can be detected by hydrophones. While there is extensive research on underwater acoustic theory and surrogate methods for monitoring bedload transport, there is a lack of heuristic work that analyzes collected bedload samples in conjunction with underwater acoustic recordings. In April 2024, the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) unanimously ruled that the exclusion of managerial employees from Quebec’s main statutory collective bargaining regime, combined with a failure to provide them with access to any other statutory labour rights, did not violate their constitutionally protected freedom of association. This decision raises many questions about the future of constitutional labour rights at the Supreme Court. In this brief comment I address what is arguably the biggest takeaway for workers such as the casino managers whose freedom of association is poorly or entirely unprotected by statutory rights: that despite the majority judgment’s …

The cerebral cortex provides the main input to the striatum, constituting the first step in cortico-basal ganglia loops. Decades of careful anatomical tract-tracing research have established the exquisite topography of each cortical region's projection to the striatum in nonhuman primates. In parallel, neuroimaging research has demonstrated the relationship between cortico-striatal resting-state functional connectivity and specific cognitive, behavioral, psychiatric, and neurological states in humans. However, still unclear is the extent to which functional connectivity recapitulates the specific topographies of cortico-striatal anatomical connectivity. The Power Of Positive Lesbian Representation In Television: How It Affects The Well-Being And Identity Formation Of Lgbtq+ Adults, Brittany Berry

To date, there are no studies which explore the effects that positively represented Black and lesbian characters in television have on LGBTQ viewers. Exposure to LGBTQ characters has the potential to validate LGBTQ identities and improve well-being. A comprehensive literature review and quantitative analysis using Żerebecki et. al.'s codebook reveals there are simply not enough characters depicted to provide such research. In an attempt to demonstrate the qualities possessed by positively portrayed Black, lesbian characters, this study analyses Taissa Turner from the hit series Yellowjackets available on the streaming network Paramount+.

Background: FHF (fibroblast growth factor homologous factor) variants associate with arrhythmias. Although FHFs are best characterized as regulators of voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) gating, recent studies suggest broader, non-VGSC-related functions, including regulation of Cx43 (connexin 43) gap junctions and hemichannels, mechanisms that have generally been understudied or disregarded.

Methods: We assessed cardiac conduction and cardiomyocyte action potentials in mice with constitutive cardiac-specific Fgf13 ablation (cFgf13KO) while targeting Cx43 gap junctions and hemichannels pharmacologically. We characterized FGF13 regulation of Cx43 abundance and subcellular distribution. With proximity labeling proteomics, we investigated novel candidate mechanisms underlying FGF13 regulation of Cx43. …

This paper articulates the central teachings of Pope Francis’s final encyclical, Dilexit Nos, and explains how these teachings can guide business leadership. Dilexit Nos offers spiritual guidance “on the human and divine love of the Heart of Jesus Christ.” This spiritual encyclical concludes with a reminder about the importance of the love of Christ for the work to which the social encyclicals Laudato Si’ and Fratelli Tutti call us. Pope Leo XIV recently clarified the import of Dilexit Nos for our love for the poor in an apostolic exhortation, Dilexi Te, which Francis had been writing prior to his death. …

Medication reconciliation presents significant challenges for healthcare professionals, particularly due to communication gaps that contribute to patient safety incidents. The aim of the study was to investigate the perceived effect of verbal orders on in-patient medication reconciliation and safety. The study was a cross-sectional survey with nurse employees of the three tertiary hospitals in Kebbi State, Nigeria as population of the study. The instrument for the data collection was a 21-items researcher-constructed self-administered questionnaire. Chi-square and binomial regression analysis were used in data analysis. Chronic inflammation is a major factor in various degenerative diseases. The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is often the main choice, but long-term side effects such as gastrointestinal irritation and nephrotoxicity limit their use. Therefore, natural alternatives such as Trigonella foenum-graecum (fenugreek) have attracted attention due to their bioactive compound contents with anti-inflammatory properties. This narrative review was conducted through a systematic search of articles from the last 10 years in PubMed and Scopus.
