Among the more startling friendships of early 18th-century London’s literary scene is that of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and Mary Astell. Their commonalities—remarkable self-education, political activism, and prolific writing—are dwarfed by vast differences of class, politics, and character. Astell, a curiously conservative woman nearly twenty-three years Montagu’s senior, spent her unmarried life squarely in the middle class. Montagu, on the other hand, began her life in England’s loftiest social echelons—the daughter of a Duke, she eloped with untitled Edward only to see him become one of England’s wealthiest men. In 1968, university and college students across the United States demanded a larger voice in university governance. Sit-ins, rallies, and demonstrations were common, whether for civil rights, free speech, women’s rights, or against the Vietnam war and the draft. For instance, students took over the office of the President of Columbia University to protest the University’s appropriation of land that might have benefited the Black community. In this context, the students at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, had the chance to consider how they were going to pursue their own calls for change. Although they did not engage in …

Printers in the early years of the French Revolution faced an unprecedented problem with new, unprecedented legal flexibility. Though the most cohesive government-coordinated efforts to overturn old symbols and refashion France’s national identity would not come until the Republican period, French engravers in the early years of the Revolution found existing Old Regime symbols and visual codes inadequate tools, so sought “a visual formula for [this] unprecedented historical change.” Furthermore, while the National Assembly did not completely do away with the Old Regime censorship systems that it ostensibly abolished with the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, printers …

Gender Disparities In Sheltered Status And Systemic Drivers Of Homelessness In Johnson City, Tennessee, Preet Patel, Dr. Opal Frye-Clark

Journal of Appalachian Health

The article examines the homelessness crisis in Johnson City, Tennessee, a mid-sized Appalachian city. First, analysis of Point-in-Time (PIT) counts from 2023 to 2025, conducted in 2025, showed persistently high unsheltered rates (35.88% – 47.17%), with men comprising 60 – 65% of the unhoused population. Men experiencing homelessness also had approximately half the odds of being counted as sheltered compared with women, indicating a gender disparity in sheltered status. Second, an interview with an experienced public health practitioner from the Appalachian Region contextualized these findings by identifying systemic drivers, including the regional housing crisis and policy restrictions, and supporting equitable …

Introduction: Tobacco retailer availability contributes to youth tobacco use, and retailers are concentrated in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. However, few studies have examined how school-centered retailer exposure intersects with neighborhood opportunity in a predominantly rural Appalachian state.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the association between neighborhood opportunity and school-centered tobacco retailer exposure across Tennessee (TN), including differences by rurality and Appalachian status.

Methods: We constructed a tract-level, school-centered youth tobacco exposure index for TN using tobacco retailer locations and public and private K-12 school data. The index incorporated retailer proximity, density, and distance-decay accessibility measures. Child Opportunity …

The United States of America and the People’s Republic of China established full diplomatic relations on January 1, 1979, after decades of the United States failing to fully recognize the legitimacy of the government in mainland China. This “normalization” of relations between the United States and China was completed by the Carter administration and Deng Xiaoping after more than a year of negotiation between the two parties. The governments of the United States and China were motivated to normalize their relations due to many factors, and they overcame significant obstacles to do so. Cicero’s attack on Clodia Metelli in Pro Caelio was not a personal animus but a carefully wrought composition of rhetoric that rendered her an ideological emblem of late-Republican instability, reaffirming male authority through the reprobation of a wealthy, autonomous woman. This is supported by demonstrating that Cicero deployed similar characterizations of women across his career; against Sassia in Pro Cluentio and through Chelidon in the In Verrem, establishing it as a structural technique rather than a one-off tactic, and that Roman anxieties about women’s independent wealth provided the cultural conditions that made such rhetoric persuasive. While Eugenics and the American West have been thoroughly studied, the connection which highlights the continuous pattern of white supremacist ideals between the two has not been examined sufficiently. Drawing on writings from Frederick Jackson Turner, John O’Sullivan, and research by Douglas Sackman. This article articulates how the 19th-century American viewed nature as something to conquer, and those who did not share this view were deemed inferior. This photo essay explores the affective infrastructures that sustain and shape return migration between the Philippines and the Arab Gulf states. By affective infrastructures, I refer to the material, moral, economic, and relational arrangements that make migration possible, and that continue to structure life after return. Rather than addressing migration as a linear trajectory (departureemployment-return), the essay presents it as processual, and encrypted in houses, debts, bodies, aspirations, and memories. The fieldwork is grounded in Tampakan, a rural municipality in South Mindanao, a region that contains one of the largest Filipino emigration basins to the Gulf. Illustrating how return reshapes …

This paper examines the role of Big Tech in India through the conceptual lens of parallax, understood as the analytical distortion that arises when platform power is assessed from shifting institutional, legal, and geopolitical vantage points. Existing scholarship and policy debates tend to frame Big Tech in India either through Global North regulatory paradigms emphasizing monopoly power, market foreclosure, and the need for ex-ante constraints or through a domestic developmental narrative that positions digital platforms as engines of innovation, inclusion, and infrastructural expansion. Problem: The objective of this project was to evaluate and describe the flow of patients who have delayed discharge after they have participated in an enhanced therapy program. Approach: In the current practice, which started in 2021, the care coordination team identifies patients medically ready for discharge but with barriers. Working with the rehabilitation team, the care coordination team determines if the patient is suitable for the enhanced therapy program. These patients go on to receive 1 hour of physical therapy and 1 hour of occupational therapy each day, Monday through Friday, with the goal of discharge to home. Outcomes: …

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the experience of using Rho kinase inhibitor eye drops in corneal edema.

Setting/Venue: Thammasat University Hospital, Thailand

Methods: This retrospective longitudinal cohort study included patients with corneal edema treated with topical ripasudil. Clinical data were collected from medical records, including diagnosis, demographic characteristics, dosage regimen, and outcomes such as visual acuity (VA), intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT), endothelial cell count (EEC), coefficient of variation (CV), and percentage of hexagonal cells (%Hexa). Patients were followed across multiple visits (Visit 0-5). Subgroup analyses were performed according to underlying etiologies.

Objectives: To evaluate the performance of sixth-year Thammasat medical students in the Primary Medical Care course through CRQ examinations across multiple affiliated clinical training centers during the academic year 2024 and identify specific diseases or topics requiring improvement at each location.

Regulatory sandboxes are designed to give firms space to offer novel products and services to consumers on a trial basis, under an interim, tailor-made regulatory regime. Ideally, this leaves regulators better placed to understand how rules ought to be modified to accommodate new, socially beneficial offerings on a more permanent basis. This thesis examines the feminist literary traditions of Portugal and Cape Verde through a comparative analysis of Ana de Castro Osório’s Infelizes and Dina Salústio’s Mornas eram as noites. Separated by nearly nine decades and an ocean, these two works nonetheless converge in their insistence on women’s autonomy, bodily sovereignty, and resistance to patriarchal structures. Drawing on Hélène Cixous’s theory of écriture féminine and Kimberlé Crenshaw’s framework of intersectionality, this thesis argues that despite the significant differences in time, geography, and socio-political context that separate these authors, powerful threads of feminist consciousness bind their writing together. This contribution to the special issue of the Forum argues that mainstream science fiction can be an important site for narrating a nascent change in the moral economy of armed politics in the United States. While firearm politics remain durably partisan, I show that a narrower but significant norm change is emerging: the boundary between ordinary gun ownership and politically charged preparedness has become more permeable, even as overt political violence remains broadly stigmatized. Background: Heart failure (HF) represents the final common pathway of diverse cardiovascular disorders, including coronary artery disease, primary myocardial pathology, and abnormalities of cardiac conduction. These conditions arise from an interplay of genetic, environmental, and psychosocial influences, making it essential to understand these determinants to improve risk prediction and prevention. Multiple biological pathways of inflammation, fibrosis, coagulation, oxidative stress, lipid dysregulation, endothelial dysfunction, and metabolic disturbances are shaped by inherited susceptibility and modifiable exposures. Together, these mechanisms drive HF development and progression, though their relative contributions vary across populations. Since the scholastic era, the pursuit of God has occurred preeminently through reason, leading to an imbalanced theology of God that persists to the present day in the form of intellect-centered theology.
