Julian Niemcewicz wrote from Paris, France to Susan Niemcewicz in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. Julian was at last in Paris and approaching the Sea Coast to sail as soon as possible for America. It was painful to leave his brothers, sisters, and friends. To alleviate their grief Julian told them he would try and persuade Susan to visit. He was astonished and mortified that Susan had yet to receive the handkerchief he sent. Mr. Livingston left for England. Novalis is Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg (1772-1801). A German writer who helped define German Romanticism, he was a key influence on MacDonald. Heinrich von Ofterdingen (1802) is a fantastical romance that concerns a young poet in search of love, who has dream visions. A central symbol in the work is a blue flower, which has become an icon for German Romanticism.

Luvido di Brindoli, Florentine nobleman, had two children—a son, Vincentio and a daughter, Herselia. Vincentio bitterly envied Herselia believing that his father loved her more. One night Brindoli received two guests—Count Fovolli and his handsome young son, Henri Velasquez. Herselia instantly fell in love with Henry and confided the matter in his brother who contrived a plot to ruin her happiness forever. Accordingly, he encouraged Herselia to elope with Henry the next day, and, secretly informed Brindoli about it.

This intriguing document is a political 4th of July “discourse” by an African American New England Congregational ordained minister and Revolutionary War veteran from the very early years of the Republic. Lemuel Haynes’ personal history is an interesting story, as is his assessment of the progress, needs, and future prospects of the new nation. Ostensibly and formally, the discourse is about selecting leadership dedicated to serving the public welfare and avoiding men who seek office for personal preferment, power, or fame. Jean Paul (Johann Paul Friedrich Richter, 1763-1825) was a German writer. Titan (1800-1803) is a four-volume novel in the Bildungsroman (novel of education) tradition. Schoppe is the friend of Albano (the main character), who searches for balance in his life. Schoppe, however, is a cynic and pessimist and dies after he thinks he see his doppelgänger, but who is, in fact, his look-alike friend. Schoppe’s tragic ending reinforces the death of the brothers in Phantastes.

This notebook was written by student Uriah Derickson at Pennsylvania Hospital. The notebook includes notes from a lecture on Midwifery by Dr. William Shippen, Jr. that were taken on April 7, 1798. Shippen was a professor of Anatomy and Surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital from 1774-1806. He pioneered courses in midwifery despite opposition, and warned against the use of instruments in childbirth (Penn University Archives & Records Center). The notebook also contains clinical notes written at the Pennsylvania Hospital under the direction of Dr. Benjamin Rush and Dr. Philip Syng Physick. The notebook mentions that on February 26, …

President George Washington’s farewell address “To the People of the United States” was delivered to the public through the medium of the Philadelphia Daily Advertiser newspaper and was immediately reprinted in other newspapers and in pamphlet form throughout the country, and in England, Ireland, and Scotland as well. All contemporary editions derived directly or indirectly from the Daily Advertiser newspaper source.

The composition of the address was a collaborative effort, with James Madison co-authoring with Washington an early draft that was reviewed and revised at least twice to incorporate suggestions by Alexander Hamilton. The final draft, in Washington’s handwriting, was …

David Ramsay wrote to John Kean in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ramsay informed Kean that Mr. Abendenons would likely trouble him in transferring his certificates to Charleston. An advertisement was published in the newspapers that called on the stockholders to meet to nominate bank officers. Suggested bank officers should immediately decide on the question of branches. The Conspiracy of Kings, published in February 1792, is very much a work of its time, the first months of the constitional monarchy in France. Louis XVI and the new Legislative Assembly began their uneasy relationship in October 1792. Outside France, exiled members of the nobility campaigned to persuade the sovereigns of Europe to intervene and restore them to their privileges. On the other side, friends of the French Revolution sought to discourage intervention and to discredit the principles of legitimacy and social hierarchy that supported the old order.
