The Impact Of Art Therapy On Empathy Development In Thai Adolescents, Baitoey Charoenpitaya
The Impact Of Art Therapy On Empathy Development In Thai Adolescents, Baitoey Charoenpitaya
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This qualitative research aimed to explore how the embodied mandala method, grounded in the Embodiment–Projection–Role (EPR) framework and the concept of the mandala as a dramatic structure of the mind, can support the development of empathy in Thai adolescents. The study involved ten participants aged 13–15 who engaged in expressive arts activities across six sessions. Data were collected through structured written interviews, reflection notes, and artwork, and analyzed thematically. Two key themes emerged: (1) Emotional Echoes: Knowing Through Feeling (affective empathy), and (2) Beyond Distance: Bridging Self and Other (cognitive and affective empathy). Findings indicated that the embodied mandala method …

Hydrogen is a critical energy vector, and magnetic heating reactors represent a promising production technology where current-induced magnetization raises system temperature. Due to the nonlinear and complex thermal dynamics, this study applies a hybrid Echo State Network (ESN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model to capture system behavior, combining ESN’s nonlinear dynamic identification with LSTM’s ability to learn long-term dependencies. Hyperparameters were optimized for best performance at 30 reservoir nodes, 0.5 spectral radius, 0.9 connectivity, batch size 4, 50 LSTM units, and 60 epochs. The ESN-LSTM models with 3-input and 4-input feature sets were tested on three winding coil geometries …

Investigation Of Molecular Interactions In Electrocatalysis Using Atomic Force Microscopy, Parivat Phiphatbunyabhorn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Electrocatalysis at the nanoscale is fundamentally governed by molecular interactions, but these processes remain poorly understood due to their difficulty to directly investigate and their complex nature. In this study, atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based force spectroscopy is employed to investigate interfacial forces and reactivity in two representative systems: the electrochemical deterioration and healing of Au nanothin films on n-type silicon and the electrocatalytic reduction of MEA-CO2 adduct on Cu electrocatalysts. In the Au nanothin film system, observing that surface degradation is mediated by anionic cluster interactions and modulated by intrinsic band bending and surface energy effects. Remarkably, 20-nm Au films …

Design And Kinematic Testing Of A Resin Artificial Monarch Butterfly Wing, Thomas Payne Clark
Design And Kinematic Testing Of A Resin Artificial Monarch Butterfly Wing, Thomas Payne Clark
Theses
Due to its ability to travel long distances efficiently, as evidenced by its yearly migration, the monarch butterfly is a strong candidate upon which to base a micro-aerial vehicle. Of primary importance in this venture is designing artificial wings with similar kinematics to a monarch wing. A first attempt produced a wing that differed significantly from a monarch wing in terms of deformation while flapping and empirical force coefficient trends. Using a new resin-based 3D printer, a new wing has been designed and developed to improve upon the issue with the original artificial wing. Both wings are tested using a …

Theses
This research aims to establish advanced analytical methods for targeted metabolomics using Gas-Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The focus is on quantifying key metabolites involved in specific metabolic pathways, optimizing sample preparation, and ensuring rigorous validation of method development parameters. By targeting thirteen specific metabolites, the research seeks to enhance metabolite extraction efficiency and analytical sensitivity. Analytical parameters such as selectivity, specificity, range, limit of detection, and limit of quantification were evaluated. This study's findings will contribute to a more precise understanding of metabolic alterations in disease states and improve the robustness of GC-MS-based metabolomics.
Enhanced Suppression Of Stimulated Brillouin Scattering In High Energy Fiber Lasers Through Novel Chaotic Phase Modulation, Zachary Helton
Enhanced Suppression Of Stimulated Brillouin Scattering In High Energy Fiber Lasers Through Novel Chaotic Phase Modulation, Zachary Helton
Theses
Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) poses a significant challenge in the development of high-power, single-mode continuous-wave fiber lasers. SBS occurs when the laser intensity is sufficient to generate acoustic vibrations in the fiber, leading to the reflection of light and limiting the maximum achievable power. Spectral broadening of the laser linewidth is a common SBS suppression technique. This thesis presents a novel approach using sine waves phase-modulated by chaotically generated noise to achieve improved SBS suppression. Experimental results demonstrate that this method achieves flatter and broader optical linewidths compared to traditional white noise modulation, even at lower power levels. This approach …

Complexity, Grouping, And Similarity: Effects On Numerosity Estimations, Keighly Harris
Theses
This study looked at the effects of visual features like complexity, grouping, and similarity on numerosity estimations. I hypothesized that complex visual stimuli would be more difficult to accurately estimate than simple visual stimuli. Additionally, I hypothesized that stimuli that were visually similar or displayed in spread out, distributed patterns would have more accurate estimations compared to visually random or closely grouped stimuli. Lastly, this study was designed to assess the combined effects of these visual features on numerosity estimation accuracy. Participants were asked to briefly look at images displaying groups of items containing these visual features, estimate the number …
3d Co-Culture Of Human B Lymphocytes With Cd40l-Expressing Fibroblasts Using An Ultra-Hydrophilic Surface For In-Vitro Mimicry Of Secondary Lymphoid Organs, Ananta Kumar
Theses
B cells are critical components of the adaptive immune system that proliferate and differentiate within the secondary lymphoid organs. Traditional two-dimensional (2D) cell cultures fall short of replicating the intricate structures and dynamic evolution of 3D tissue environments, prompting more physiologically pertinent in vitro models. Our approach employs ultra-hydrophilic surfaces engineered from methacrylated N-hexanoyl glycol chitosan to cultivate a three-dimensional (3D) co-culture of CD40L-expressing MS5 stromal cells and naive B cells derived from the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of healthy human donors. This novel system aims to mirror the structural and cellular intricacies of germinal centers within the secondary …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Background/Purpose: Some studies have reported on the influence of proximal (shoulder, elbow, and forearm) and distal (hand and fingers) upper limb function on self-care skills; however, the possibility of a spurious correlation caused by the level of function of the other affected region (proximal or distal) was not eliminated. This study investigated the partial correlations between the proximal or distal function of the affected upper limb with self-care skills after controlling for the effect of the other affected region.
Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 53 patients with stroke. We examined the relationship between the proximal or distal Fugl–Meyer Assessment- …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common peripheral entrapment neuropathy but current conservative treatments are unsatisfactory. Recently, clinical trials using ultrasound-guided regenerative injection with 5% dextrose water or platelet-rich plasma have reported clinically and statistically significant benefits compared to current conservative treatments for the treatment of CTS. Regenerative injection for CTS is increasingly being utilized, proportional to the worldwide expansion of skills in the use of ultrasound guidance for precise injection and localization, and due to accumulating evidence that it enhances the success rate of conservative treatment, and reduces the rate of surgery. In this narrative review, our goals …

Impact Of The Substrate Stiffness On Macrophage Function, Aaron Newchurch
Impact Of The Substrate Stiffness On Macrophage Function, Aaron Newchurch
Theses
This study explores macrophage cell function in healthy and diseased tissue that alters the synovial membrane housing fibroblasts and macrophages by examining how substrate stiffness impacts macrophage function. Current research suggests macrophages adapt, becoming more inflammatory in this environment. Divalent ions (CaCl2 or SrCl2) are used to adjust alginate hydrogel stiffness. The monocyte cell line THP-1 is transformed into macrophages through PMA, LPS, and IFNγ treatment within hydrogels, then cultured for 12 days. Divalent ions affect macrophage functionality; Sr2+ crosslinked hydrogels show higher viability, as well as an increased expression of M1 markers CD197 and IL1β, while M2 marker expression …
Analyzing Trust In Automation Using Large Language Models, Derek Koehl
Analyzing Trust In Automation Using Large Language Models, Derek Koehl
Theses
This thesis explores the measurement of trust in the context of human interactions with automated systems. Trust is influenced by factors like perceived ability, benevolence, and integrity which presents a measurement challenge. Given the lack of a universally accepted model for trust, there is an abundance of trust measurement methods in the literature. This research aimed to ascertain the reliability of NLP-based measurements to determine whether such methods can shed light on the dimensionality of trust as a construct and to isolate a Linguistic Fingerprint™ of trust. The results lent support to trust as a unidimensional construct. There was little …
Ambient Temperature Modelling With Ecostress And Private Weather Stations, Gaurav Khatri
Ambient Temperature Modelling With Ecostress And Private Weather Stations, Gaurav Khatri
Theses
This thesis explores the development and application of a novel data architecture for predicting ambient temperatures across US cities, focusing on integrating multi-source data i.e. ECOSTRESS land surface temperatures, urban surface properties, and crowdsourced weather data. The methodology is designed for scalability and adaptability across different urban regions, employing rigorous data quality control to enhance prediction accuracy. The validation of this model across diverse urban settings, demonstrated through rigorous RMSE comparisons and spatial mapping, validates its superiority over traditional models. Through experiments in diverse climatic conditions in Madison, Wisconsin, and Las Vegas, Nevada, the study assesses the model’s generalizability and …
Phylogeography, Speciation, And Cryptic Diversity In The Cave Springtail Pseudosinella Spinosa (Entomobryomorpha: Entomobryidae) From The Interior Low Plateau And Appalachian Valley & Ridge Karst Regions, Brendan Cramphorn
Theses
Caves offer a unique opportunity to study the ecology and evolution of life in extreme environments, particularly with respect to understanding patterns of diversity. Most cave-obligate species are dispersal limited and have restricted ranges, often endemic to a single or a few cave systems. However, a few species have particularly broad distributions suggesting that they either are not dispersal limited or perhaps represent a species complex of morphological similar but genetically distinct species. In this thesis, I explore morphological variation, phylogeography, and possibly cryptic diversity in Pseudosinella spinosa, a cave collembolan (springtail) that inhabits the Interior Low Plateau and Appalachian …
Multilabel Defect Classification Using Graph Neural Networks For Autonomous Visual Inspections, Md Sazzad Hossen
Multilabel Defect Classification Using Graph Neural Networks For Autonomous Visual Inspections, Md Sazzad Hossen
Theses
Visual inspections of safety-critical systems are crucial in reducing the risk of equipment failures, downtime, and loss of life. This nondestructive testing (NDT) method uses a portable borescope or camera along with other sensors directly or mounted on robotic platforms to inspect difficult-to-access areas with ease, minimum time, and cost. Although state-of-the-art visual inspection platforms are equipped with sensors from multiple modalities, the inspection tasks still require human subject matter experts to identify defects and analyze them. This jeopardizes human safety in a hazardous work environment in energy industries, as well as the extended time for inspection and human error. …
Potential Mechanisms Maintaining A Conspicuous Polymorphism In Eastern Mosquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki), Katelyn Giltner
Potential Mechanisms Maintaining A Conspicuous Polymorphism In Eastern Mosquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki), Katelyn Giltner
Theses
Genetic variation often precedes adaptation, so the mechanisms that maintain this variation are a central topic in evolutionary biology. Gambusia holbrooki, or eastern mosquitofish, possesses a rare polymorphism for melanistic coloration. Melanics and typical silver males were examined for differences in behavioral and physiological traits that may impact the persistence of the melanism trait. No differences in standard metabolic rate were found via closed-chamber respirometry, but a detour task indicated that melanic males possess greater cognitive flexibility. Effects of the social environment on stress and reproductive traits were also evaluated by pairing males and comparing cortisol levels and sperm quality …
A Comparative Study Of Tin Anodes In Carbonate And Glyme Electrolytes, Ameya Tushar Khirwadkar
A Comparative Study Of Tin Anodes In Carbonate And Glyme Electrolytes, Ameya Tushar Khirwadkar
Theses
Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are a focus of novel energy research as they present a sustainable alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to the abundance of sodium and anode materials. Tin is a promising option for anodes in SIBs because of its ability to be used independently or with other metal alloys. The advantage of using styrene butadiene rubber in tin anodes is a source of intrigue for potentially improving the shelf life of anodes and reducing the electrical fatigue on the battery. The study of glyme electrolytes compared to widely used carbonate electrolytes can potentially improve cycling life and the …
Modeling The Impacts Of Land Use/Land Cover Change On Hydrological Dynamics In The Belize River Watershed Using The Soil And Water Assessment Tool, Nina Copeland
Theses
Forest cover loss from land cover/land use (LCLU) change (LCLUC) can alter watershed hydrology. The primary goal of this study was to understand how LCLUC in the Belize River Watershed (BRW) impacted streamflow and related hydrological dynamics from 2000 to 2020 using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The main objectives were to (1) calibrate and improve the accuracy of the SWAT model using in-situ streamflow data, (2) investigate the predominant LCLUCs leading to forest cover loss in the BRW, and (3) examine changes in streamflow and related hydrological dynamics in the BRW comparing four LCLU scenarios. Findings showed …

An Assessment Of Eastern Box Turtles (Terrapene Carolina Carolina) In North Alabama With A Focus On Ranavirus Prevalence And Urbanization, Emma M. Jordan
Theses
Eastern Box Turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina) are susceptible to many threats, including development, urbanization, and disease. A novel Ranavirus has been attributed to mortality in both captive and wild box turtles, including one known occurrence in a captive box turtle in Alabama, but no further assessment has been made. The aims of this study were to assess if Frog Virus 3-like Ranavirus infects wild box turtles and if its prevalence is related to urbanization in North Alabama, USA. I conducted visual encounter surveys in eight survey areas in North Alabama that occur across a gradient of urbanization and development. Twenty-six …
