Elizabeth Spelke’s What Babies Know is a scholarly presentation of core knowledge theory and a masterful compendium of empirical evidence that supports it. Unfortunately, Spelke’s principal theoretical assumption is that core knowledge is simply the innate product of cognitive evolution. As such, her theory fails to explicate the developmental mechanisms underlying the emergence of the cognitive systems underlying that knowledge.

Due to the complexity of the brain, the underlying mechanisms of most neurobiological diseases have yet to be completely uncovered, prompting the use of more innovative tools in current research. Designing 3D printed protein models has shown promising results in facilitating the understanding of protein dynamics by allowing scientists to analyze protein binding and folding at a 3-dimensional level. Kidney and Brain Expressed Protein (KIBRA) is a synaptic scaffold protein commonly found in brain regions associated with learning and memory. This article addresses the “why,” “what,” and “how” of teaching for transpersonal learning. Why transpersonal education is relevant for addressing modern social problems and the global ecological crisis, what it is like to teach for transpersonal learning, and how transpersonal learning becomes transformative are discussed. Three promising options in technology and consciousness studies for transpersonal learning—transpersonal media, multistate studies, and entheogenic education—are described and the challenges of introducing transpersonal education into academic settings and assessing educational (student) learning outcomes are reviewed. Gendered, classed, and racialized bodies differentially experience state-sanctioned violence and societal norms. Body protests — when the body manifests the political messages by drawing attention to itself — manifest in these intersections. Women engaging in body protests garner more attention; a body that is sexualized, controlled, and subjugated draws attention to itself as a political act. To understand this, I ask, what explains the specific tactics that women employ in acts of political resistance? Childhood obesity has increased precipitously to the point that almost 20% of children between the ages of 2 and 19 have been diagnosed with obesity. While obesity is a complex metabolic disorder, one contributing factor is diet, particularly a diet high in fat. Among many problems associated with diet-induced obesity, the impact on skeletal health is often overlooked. In addition to increased stress on the skeleton due to excess weight, obesity also disrupts the endocrine and immune systems that, in turn, can secondarily alter skeletal growth. In the study of philosophy, one is bound to come across some rather counter-intuitive theories about how the world really is. This is especially true when it comes to studies of the mind and consciousness. Despite this, some of these seemingly-outlandish theories often have a good degree of explanatory power, and oftentimes raise complicated moral dilemmas. Both of those things seem to be true of the Hypothesis of Extended Cognition (HEC). Octopuses are fascinating animals with a bad reputation, however, they are slowly but surely gaining the recognition they deserve. The goal of this study was to identify a hierarchy of motivating factors in brooding octopuses, using three O. joubini that had laid eggs in captivity as case studies. To address feeding motivation, I continued to supply the animals food, both free-roaming and directly to their dens. To address the importance of hiding, I disturbed the dens and monitored the animals’ responses. Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease (MMVD) remains to be the number one cause of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) in dogs. Mainly characterized by mitral regurgitation in the left atrium, MMVD can lead to fatal heart failure down the line. MicroRNAs, which are small, noncoding RNAs about 21-25 nucleotides in length that regulate gene expression, can be found freely-circulating throughout the blood, extracellular fluid, intracellular fluid and interstitial fluid, or in extracellular vesicles such as exosomes. These vesicles play a role in the transportation of various molecules as well as in intercellular communication. Previous studies show microRNAs display statistically significant expression levels …

Despite its deterministic nature, chaos arises in many systems, including double pendulums. In this paper, we will provide the background information on differential equations along with foundational tools needed to detect chaos, such as the local stability analysis of steady states, time series, phase planes, and Lyapunov exponents. Armed with these tools, we will run numerical simulations, exploring the angular displacements for both single and double pendulums, and show why single pendulums are not considered chaotic. For double pendulums, we will estimate Lyapunov exponents for a given energy level to determine when chaos occurs.

Breast cancer is a malignant tumor with a high mortality rate among women. Therefore, it is necessary to develop novel therapies to effectively treat this disease. In this study, iron selenide nanorods (FeSe2 NRs) were designed for use in magnetic hyperthermic, photothermal, and chemodynamic therapy (MHT/PTT/CDT) for breast cancer. To illustrate their efficacy, FeSe2 NRs were modified with the chemotherapeutic agent methotrexate (MTX). MTX-modified FeSe2 (FeSe2- MTX) exhibited excellent controlled drug release properties. Fe2+ released from FeSe2 NRs induced the release of •OH from H2O2 via a Fenton/Fenton-like reaction, enhancing the efficacy of CDT. Under alternating magnetic field (AMF) stimulation …
