Inflammatory Protein Elicitation In Response To Whole-Body Vibration Exposure, Nicholas Miller

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study aimed to assess the effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) on the brain through changes in blood protein concentrations, seat and head accelerations, and symptomatology over time. Subjects were assigned to control, 1-hour, or 8-hour vibration exposure groups. Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and S100B concentrations were measured. Root mean square average weighted vibration (Aws), vibration dose value (VDV), and seat-to-head transmissibility (STHT) were calculated. There were no differences in GFAP (p = 0.79) or S100B (p = 0.97) concentrations between 1-hour and 8-hour subjects (p = 0.79). Average weighted head acceleration (p …

Existential Advocacy: Lawyering For Ai Safety And The Future Of Humanity, John Bliss Jan 2024

Existential Advocacy: Lawyering For Ai Safety And The Future Of Humanity, John Bliss

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Lawyers have played a central role in a wide range of social movements aiming to provide legal voice to marginalized communities. How might this tradition of social-change lawyering apply to the protection of future generations— a population that cannot advocate for themselves? This is a pressing question in the movement to mitigate “existential risk,” which refers to events that would foreclose a meaningful existence for future generations either through human extinction or irreversible trajectories of human suffering. Over the past two decades, an Oxford-based academic community has been researching existential threats that could arise from emerging technology, such as advanced …

Bone Traces And Modifications From Feeding By Dermestes Maculatus, B. V. Adams, Leon G. Higley Jan 2024

Bone Traces And Modifications From Feeding By Dermestes Maculatus, B. V. Adams, Leon G. Higley

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

That Dermestes maculatus feeding can leave marks on bones is established in the literature - that D. maculatus routinely mark bones is not. Our results here, exposing fleshed bones to D. maculatus adults and immatures for almost two months after complete tissue removal, indicate that under natural conditions D. maculatus do not feed on bones. The key issue seems to be the ability of D. maculatus to seek new food sources versus being confined (and eventually starving) on bones. In a natural setting, once a food supply is exhausted, D. maculatus would seek new food …

What's The 411?, Liliana Ciraulo

ENGS 15.11: Design and Education

This class invites students to reflect on gossip and the role it plays in their lives. As they complete activities such as a game of telephone and round-table discussions, they will walk away with a further understanding of gossip’s history, benefits, consequences, and ethics. My hope as an educator is that students will take these lessons and apply them to their relationships and interactions, so that a more gossip-conscious community can be fostered.

Simulation Of Optimal Control Of Vaccination For Svihr Covid-19 Epidemic Model, Kantanop Yimfan Jan 2024

Simulation Of Optimal Control Of Vaccination For Svihr Covid-19 Epidemic Model, Kantanop Yimfan

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Infectious disease modeling plays a crucial role in understanding and managing epidemic outbreaks. Mathematical models, combined with control strategies, can help guide effective interventions and policy making. In this study, we examined an epidemic model, so-called SV IHR, which is an extended SIR model with additional states to incorporate vaccination and treatment. Our goal is to determine parameters known as controls; specifically, the vaccination proportion, through the framework of the optimal control problems. We defined an objective function and explored the control strategies that optimize it. Numerical simulations were then performed to illustrate the dynamics of the epidemic both with …

A Theory-Derived Mmpi-2/Mmpi-2-Rf Scale Of Suicidality, Catherine A. Ebarb

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Clinicians and researchers have routinely searched for better ways to identify suicidal behaviors before an attempt to end ones life can occur. Decades of research have studied the question of what predisposes a person to suicidal behaviors and taking their own life. Researchers have sought to examine ways to capture these risk factors and features of suicidal behavior through assessment. Although various suicidal behavior measures exist, many of them only capture a snapshot view of suicidal risk. In addition, some measures in use are not derived from the most recent theories on suicidal behavior, which have expanded the understanding of …

Relationship Between Spiritual Struggles And Health Outcomes In Adult Chronic Pain Patient Populations, Brianna Marie Todd Jan 2024

Relationship Between Spiritual Struggles And Health Outcomes In Adult Chronic Pain Patient Populations, Brianna Marie Todd

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chronic pain affects about one-fifth of the worlds population. Although a biopsychosocial model is often applied, religious and spiritual factors are frequently neglected in the conceptualization of pain and its impact. Prior research has identified how religious and spiritual (R/S) struggles are associated with depression, pain catastrophizing, and pain disability in pain patients. However, few investigations have assessed how struggles affect the relationship between pain and well-being. The present study explored how R/S struggles affect the relationship between pain and well-being when tested as mediators and moderators, while accounting for the effects of age, gender, race, income, education, and religious …

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Protein aggregation is linked to many chronic and devastating neurodegenerative human diseases and is strongly associated with aging. This work demonstrates that protein aggregation and oligomerization can be evaluated by a solid-state nanopore method at the single molecule level. A silicon nitride nanopore sensor was used to characterize both the amyloidogenic and native-state oligomerization of a model protein ß-lactoglobulin variant A (βLGa). The findings from the nanopore measurements are validated against atomic force microscopy (AFM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) data, comparing βLGa aggregation from the same samples at various stages. By calibrating with linear and circular dsDNA, this study …

We present as a case study the evolution of a series of participant-centered workshops designed to meet a need in the life sciences education community—the incorporation of best practices in the assessment of student learning. Initially, the ICABL (Inclusive Community for the Assessment of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology/BMB Learning) project arose from a grass-roots effort to develop material for a national exam in biochemistry and molecular biology. ICABL has since evolved into a community of practice in which participants themselves—through extensive peer review and reflection—become integral stakeholders in the workshops. To examine this evolution, this case study begins with a …

Modeling The Function Of Ryanodine Receptor Type 2 And Its Role In Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia (Cpvt) Heart Disease, Harani Ritesh Athwale, Dillen-Preetesh Jayanti Patel, Sai Puneeth Kothuru Jan 2024

Modeling The Function Of Ryanodine Receptor Type 2 And Its Role In Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia (Cpvt) Heart Disease, Harani Ritesh Athwale, Dillen-Preetesh Jayanti Patel, Sai Puneeth Kothuru

Protein Modeling Reports

Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia (CPVT) is a potentially fatal condition linked to a mutation in the Ryanodine receptor (RyR2), the largest calcium ion channel known, which is crucial for heart function. The RyR2 protein is made of four similar subunits. Mutations in RyR2 can cause the channels to "leak," disrupting normal heart rhythms. In individuals with this mutation, the combination of caffeine intake and exercise can worsen these effects, leading to sudden cardiac arrest. With the RyR2 receptor located on the sarcoplasmic reticulum of cardiac muscle, the mutation prevents the receptor from fully closing, which hyperpolarizes the membrane and disrupts …

Exploiting Light To Probe Biological Processes, Madeline Denison Jan 2024

Exploiting Light To Probe Biological Processes, Madeline Denison

Wayne State University Dissertations

Metal complexes have many advantages as biochemical tools due to their rich photophysical properties and unique geometry. Metal-based complexes are commonly reported as emissive probes or photoactivatable biological agents. Long emission lifetimes of metal complexes allow for the use of lifetime gating which eliminates autofluorescence found in assays, a distinct advantage over short-lived organic fluorophores. This work utilizes this powerful technique to generate reversible, emissive probes for monitoring CYP3A4 active site occupancy. In addition to the emissive properties of metals, metals can also be used as photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photochemotherapy (PCT) agents. These light-activated strategies provide important spatiotemporal control …

Synthesis Of Leishmania Spp Antigens For The Development Of Vaccine Candidates, Dipesh Budhathoki Jan 2024

Synthesis Of Leishmania Spp Antigens For The Development Of Vaccine Candidates, Dipesh Budhathoki

Theses and Dissertations

Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the protozoan parasite of the genus Leishmania. Presently no vaccine against Leishmaniasis is available, so there is a need for new anti-leishmanial treatments, including an effective preventive vaccine. We focus on developing vaccine candidates based on leishmania’s cell surface carbohydrate antigens. Saccharides heavily envelop the cell surface of Leishmania, lipophosphoglycan (LPG) becoming a significant glycan in most leishmania species. Its intrinsic antigenicity makes this polysaccharide a useful target for developing conjugated vaccine candidates against all leishmaniasis variants. In this report, we present our progress towards the synthesis of the fragments of LPG …

Human satellites (HSats) are pericentric, tandemly repeating satellite DNA sequences in the human genome. While silent in normal cells, a subset of HSat2 noncoding RNA is expressed and accumulates in the nucleus of cancer cells. We developed a FISH-based approach for identification of the distribution of three subfamilies of HSat2 (A1, A2, B) sequences on individual human chromosomes. Further, using the HSat subfamily annotations in the T2T completed centromere satellite (CenSat) sequence, we isolated, defined and mapped differentially expressed sequence variants of nuclear-restricted HSat2 and HSat3 RNA from cancer cell lines and heat-shocked cells. We identified chromosome-specific and subfamily-specific expression …
