Geology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Mineral wealth has motivated and funded extractive empires, often at the expense of local communities, workers, natural environments, and public health. Yet those connections are not recorded in traditional mineral catalogues, which divorce specimens from context. This article examines the roots of those omissions and situates mineral cataloguing in the larger body of literature on knowledge organization systems and their relation to power. We examine how colonial ideologies of land and people become entrenched in mineral cataloguing practices, and how this reinforces the ways that contemporary geologists think about their work. Publications

Clemson University Libraries provides expert research services and has experienced a growing number of requests for guidance regarding evidence synthesis projects. In response, a team of three early-career science librarians sought to create a comprehensive online tutorial on the systematic review process. The tutorial outsources introductory education and features learning objects and assessments for each step. The tutorial streamlines consultations, freeing librarians to focus on project specifics. Accompanying participation guidelines clarify roles and responsibilities, timely completion of reviews, and authorship expectations. This asynchronous tutorial supports an equitable service model, benefiting researchers across all fields.

The circadian clock is a fundamental biological mechanism that regulates various physiological processes, including DNA repair, to synchronize with the day-night cycle. In human skin, exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light poses a significant challenge, inducing DNA damage that must be efficiently repaired to maintain genomic integrity and prevent carcinogenesis. This study delved into the complex interplay between the circadian clock, UV light exposure, DNA repair, and modulation of circadian transcriptional machinery in human skin. In Unreasonable: Black Lives, Police Power, and the Fourth Amendment, Devon W. Carbado illuminates how both the spectacular and quotidian forms of racialized terror, brutality, and surveillance—characteristic of enslavement—have shaped the construction of our constitutional order. He argues that the combined social normalization and legal naturalization of racial hierarchy paved the way for the development of slave patrols and other early iterations of policing where incredible acts of violence against Black bodies were made ordinary and essential. We don’t often think of identity as a choice, but rather something we are born into by circumstance of birth and inheritance. This paper addresses identity by assertion. Virtual worlds afford the opportunity for a more fluid concept of self: identity with intent. Understanding this approach can empower our actions and results in the virtual and natural worlds. The rights of Brazil’s Indigenous peoples have changed over time. Indigenous tribes went from original landowners, to enslaved people, to people protected by Brazil’s constitution but persistently marginalized. Through it all, Indigenous groups have protected Brazil’s Amazon Rainforest and Atlantic Forest, leading to healthy vegetation, biodiversity, and benefits to the global climate. This paper tracks how the rights of Indigenous groups correlate to the preservation of Brazil’s environment. The use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) has become popular in recent years as an alternative to traditional cigarettes. These devices heat and subsequently vaporize e-liquids for inhalation by the user, which allows for the delivery of ingredients such as flavorings, nicotine, and solvents through the vapor. Flavorings used in e-liquids are “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) for consumption by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), however there are currently no recommendations on safety regarding the inhalation of flavoring agents. DOES PATH MATTER: A QUANTITATIVE STUDY EXAMINING MATHEMATICS COURSE-TAKING PATTERNS AND DEGREE OR TRANSFER ATTAINMENT

Abstract

This quantitative study, guided by Bean and Metzner’s (1985) student attrition model, examined whether mathematics course-taking pattern is associated with a students’ chances of attaining degree or transfer at a community college. Six years of student data from a midwestern community college was used. Descriptive statistics of student course-taking patterns highlighted that more full-time and college level students enrolled in mathematics immediately while part-time and developmental level students delayed their enrollment in mathematics coursework. Corequisite support courses have been used as an intervention in higher education to improve gateway college math course completion and reduce the time necessary to do so. While a substantial amount of research on the effectiveness of corequisite support exists, it has largely focused on non-STEM courses. Interactions of intense ultrashort laser pulses with liquid media and at solid-liquid interfaces produce plasmas with high densities of reactive chemical species that promote the formation of nanomaterials. This work discusses the current understanding of laser-induced chemical reactions in aqueous medium involving hydrated electrons and hydroxyl radicals, and the effects of chemical additives on these reactions. Two chemical strategies are presented for controlling the composition of the laser-induced plasma and nanomaterial properties. First, adding chemical scavengers of hydroxyl radicals will be shown to inhibit metal oxidation, enabling the synthesis of ligand-free Ag and Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles by reduction of Au …

He held several academic positions in and outside the country. He taught 83 Latin American and Caribbean neurosurgeons with patience and devotion, always willing to share his knowledge without reservation. Late-onset Alzheimer disease (AD) is a highly complex disease with multiple subtypes, as demonstrated by its disparate risk factors, pathological manifestations, and clinical traits. Discovery of biomarkers to diagnose specific AD subtypes is a key step towards understanding biological mechanisms underlying this enigmatic disease, generating candidate drug targets, and selecting participants for drug trials. Popular statistical methods for evaluating candidate biomarkers, fold change (FC) and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), were designed for homogeneous data and we demonstrate the inherent weaknesses of these approaches when used to evaluate subtypes representing less than half of the diseased cases. …

Objective: Several gaps remain in the understanding of the onset, dynamic transitions, and associated risk factors of adverse posttraumatic neuropsychiatric sequelae (APNS) in the acute post-trauma window. Based on serial assessments of symptoms from a large cohort study, we identified homogeneous statuses across multiple APNS symptom domains and investigated the dynamic transitions among these statuses during the first 2 months after trauma exposure. Furthermore, we studied how symptom onset and transitions are affected by equity-relevant characteristics. Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use (tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis) are highly comorbid. Many factors affect this relationship, including sociodemographic and psychosocial characteristics, other prior traumas, and physical health. However, few prior studies have investigated this prospectively, examining new substance use and the extent to which a wide range of factors may modify the relationship to PTSD. Methods: The Advancing Understanding of RecOvery afteR traumA (AURORA) study is a prospective cohort of adults presenting at emergency departments (N = 2,943). By incorporating evidence from various studies and meta-analyses, this paper provides evidence of the positive connection between motivation and mathematical achievement. Specifically, this paper explores the differences between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and various strategies to stimulate both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in the classroom, which range from different instructional strategies to motivation strategies teachers can put to use.
