Exploration Of Associations Between Asthma And Depression In Older American Adults: A Pooled Cross-Sectional Analysis Of Medicare Recipients, Brian Ring

Background

While unclear in older populations within the US, individuals with asthma are disproportionally affected by depression relative to those without asthma. This work explores the associations between asthma, depression, sociodemographic, and disease-related factors in a US population ≥ 65 years of age.

Methods

A pooled cross-sectional analysis of Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) data was utilized to determine the association between asthma and depression from 2018 to 2020. Depression was defined as a score of ≥ 10 from the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Disease-related variables were recorded if the subject met Medicare claims criteria for the calendar year. Psilocybe cubensis are a group of mushrooms containing psilocybin with a history of consumption dating back to ancient civilization. Researchers believe the ritual use of psilocybin dates back 3,000 years amongst the indigenous people of Mexico and Central America.¹ Psilocybin is responsible for the effects associated with the consumption of “Magic Mushrooms”. This demo proposal presents a case study that uses Gene Ontology (GO) and ML/AI algorithms to design and create KO-derived datasets for ML/AI applications. We discuss the characteristics and requirements of KO practices and products in implementing ML algorithms. The focus of this demo is on how knowledge organization systems can be utilized to derive datasets that can deliver quality and trustworthiness for achieving the precision, computing of semantic similarity, and interoperability in these algorithms.

Approximately 1.63 million students (ages 11-18) currently use vapes, reflecting a concerning trend of nicotine dependence among adolescents. As the number of nicotine addiction cases continues to rise, the development of an anti-addiction drug market is evolving to address this urgent public health issue. Student self-efficacy is a student’s belief that they can perform the tasks required to be successful in an academic setting. The focus of this research is how those beliefs are formed, how they impact student performance, and how teachers can increase student self-efficacy in the classroom. Self-efficacy foundations are examined as well as the impact positive self-efficacy beliefs have on student behavior and achievement. Educational practices that increase student self-efficacy are also summarized. A guide to implementing these strategies in the science classroom with an example is given, and connections to other research and future considerations are discussed.

Flipping The Classroom: Exploring Engagement, Technology, And Student Perceptions, Ryan J. Oden

This literature review examined the effects of the flipped classroom on student engagement, perceptions, and academic performance. It reviewed studies comparing student outcomes in flipped classrooms to traditional classrooms. Meta-analyses were used to support overall trends. Quantitative and qualitative results were used to support the effects in five areas of the flipped classroom: independent learning, active in-class sessions, teacher-student interaction, technology, and academic performance. Results suggest that the emphasis on independent learning fosters self-regulation, but students may require support when transitioning to this new model. Technology tools were shown to enhance out-of-class learning and motivation. The model facilitated stronger student-teacher …

During 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic emerged as a threatening, unpredictable, and uncontrollable stressor. Meaning-making, or one’s ability to make sense of a stressful life event, integrate the event into one’s narrative of the world and meaning in life, and accordingly revise life goals, is a salient intrapsychic process contributing to psychological adjustment in the face of very stressful or traumatic experiences such as chronic health issues, interpersonal grief, and natural and man-made disasters. Environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling is a new sampling technique that allows for non-invasive sampling of target species or the characterization of entire communities based on barcoding genes. The goal of this study was to sequence common barcoding genes such as 28S rRNA and Cytochrome C Oxidase I (COI), and then develop species-specific primers for eight macroinvertebrates listed as Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) in Texas. Participants were recruited from the local community, specifically through attendance at professional conferences and LGBTQ+ events in the surrounding area. This sample received a brief battery of cognitive and sensory tasks. Participants also provided a biological sample in the form of saliva collected by the free drool method and completed a short demographic survey regarding their gender identity, medication, and health history. One aim of the presented study and the data collected, is to shed light on the much-neglected area of transgender neurological research.

Biochemical, molecular, and histopathological alterations are the most noticeable clinical and pathological characteristics attributed to diabetes mellitus. An imbalance in these parameters increases the risk of developing complications. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to determine the cardiac and hepatic protective effects of ellagic acid-loaded zinc nanoparticles (EA-ZnNPs) on diabetes, which were evaluated biochemically, molecularly, and histopathologically.

Purpose:

Cancer claims 7.6 million lives worldwide annually, affecting millions more. Conventional (CONV) radiation therapy (RT) is a key weapon in the oncological arsenal. A novel mode of radiation delivery, utilizing ultra-high dose rates (UHDR), is associated with enhancing the RT therapeutic ratio by selectively sparing normal tissue without sparing tumor tissue. However, there are many roadblocks to the clinical implementation of UHDR RT —namely the lack of standardization of experimental conditions and the inconsistency of published and unpublished results. This thesis investigates variables that affect preclinical biological outcomes to radiation.
