Rayleigh-Poisson Distribution: Properties And Estimation With Applications Of Covid-19 Mortality Rate, A. A. Ahmed, G. R. Al –Dayian, A. A. El-Helbawy, Eman O. Abdalla, S. Naserelden

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

In this paper, we introduce the Rayleigh-Poisson distribution, a generalization of the Rayleigh distribution with three parameters. The Rayleigh-Poisson distribution is more flexible than the Rayleigh distribution and can be used to model a wider range of lifetime data. The article derives closed-form expressions for several properties of the Rayleigh-Poisson distribution. The unknown model parameters are estimated and a simulation study is performed to study the behavior of the estimators. Three real datasets of COVID-19 are applied to demonstrate the Rayleigh-Poisson distribution superior performance compared to well-known lifetime distributions.

Comparison Of Scanning Electron Microscopy And Confocal Laser Microscopy For Tissue Surface Roughness Characterization, Tarnvir Dhaliwal

Master's Theses

It was found that the measurements captured by confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy had a statistically significant difference for bovine tissue. There was not a statistically significant for porcine and poultry tissue.

The intent of the study is to perform a comparative study to examine efficacy of two distinct technologies for a singular purpose: tissue surface roughness characterization. The two technologies compared are a confocal reflectance microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The comparison was made by comparing two surface roughness parameters [Ra and Rq] within ImageJ.

The study examined three different animal species [porcine, bovine, and poultry] to …

The slowly establishing salt-tolerant perennial grasses reduced nitrous oxide (N2 O- N) emissions from saline/sodic soil compared to barren areas. Other salt-tolerant species may accelerate vegetative establishment and reduce N 2 O-N emissions. In a greenhouse study, barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), Florida broadleaf mustard (Brassica juncea L.), and Kernza intermediate wheatgrass [Thinopyrum intermedium (Host) Barkworth & D. R. Dewey] were grown for 63 days to compare shoot biomass and chemical composition, N 2 O-N emissions, and the soil microbiome between saline/sodic and productive (non-salt impacted) soils. Emissions were measured six times daily from 1 to 22 and 42 to 63 …

Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim Induced Thrombocytopenia: A Report Of Two Cases And A Literature Review, Leigh Griffin Dds, Michael Graffeo Dds, Jay Sher Dds, Paul D. Freedman Dds, Renée F. Reich

The New York State Dental Journal

Sulfamethoxazole- trimethoprim (ST) is a sulfonamide derivative antibiotic that interferes with bacterial folic acid synthesis and growth by blocking dihydrofolic acid formation from para-aminobenzoic acid. One of the potential side effects of sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim is thrombocytopenia. Thrombocytopenia is a blood disorder characterized by a decreased number of circulating platelets. We present two cases of ST induced thrombocytopenia where the oral manifestations were the first indication of the low platelet count leading to life saving interventions. Our aim is to educate dentists about the oral manifestations of thrombocytopenia and its association with ST as their examination may be instrumental in directing treatment.

The phenomenon of family involvement in organized narcotics crime emerged in Indonesia when Lian Silas, the father of a narcotics lord - Fredy Pratama, was involved in alleged money laundering from the proceeds of his son's illicit narcotics business. Not only that, Fredy also involved other family members. In fact, this phenomenon is nothing new in cases of organized narcotics crime, as the Italian mafia group is also closely linked to the role of the family in the crimes committed. This research found that can also be exploited by criminals to collaborate in carrying out their actions. The analysis was …

Understanding The Complex Interactions Between Stakeholders In An Organic Food Supply Chain, M S Shalique, Sidhartha S Padhi, Rupesh Kumar Pati

Working Papers

Due to the rampant issues of sustainability violations getting exposed through media reports, NGO scrutiny and government audits, consumers are becoming more wary of irresponsible behavior of brands. This has elicited stringent monitoring of sustainability violations by brands as well as regulatory bodies. Though there are several studies on the barriers towards the adoption of sustainable products, there is a lack of holistic overview of the problems confronting the supply chain considering multiple stakeholders. Hence, we examine the main roadblocks faced by the majority of the stakeholders in implementing sustainable practices. We discuss the issues in terms of broad economic, …

Food for Health: Publications

Mechanistic investigation of host-microbe interactions in the human gut are hindered by difficulty of co-culturing microbes with intestinal epithelial cells. On one hand the gut bacteria are a mix of facultative, aerotolerant or obligate anaerobes, while the intestinal epithelium requires oxygen for growth and function. Thus, a coculture system that can recreate these contrasting oxygen requirements is critical step towards our understanding microbial-host interactions in the human gut. Here, we demonstrate Intestinal Organoid Physoxic Coculture (IOPC) system, a simple and cost-effective method for coculturing anaerobic intestinal bacteria with human intestinal organoids (HIOs). Using commensal anaerobes with varying degrees of oxygen …

Barring Judicial Review, Laura E. Dolbow Mar 2024

Barring Judicial Review, Laura E. Dolbow

Vanderbilt Law Review

Whether judicial review is available is one of the most hotly contested issues in administrative law. Recently, laws that prohibit judicial review have sparked debate in the Medicare, immigration, and patent contexts. These debates are continuing in challenges to the recently created Medicare price negotiation program. Yet despite debates about the removal of judicial review, little is known about how often, and in what contexts, Congress has expressly precluded review. This Article provides new insights about express preclusion by conducting an empirical study of the U.S. Code. It creates an original dataset of laws that expressly preclude judicial review of …

Acer’S Mathematics Anxiety And Engagement Strategy (Maes): A Framework, Sarah Buckley, Kate Reid, Catherine Pearn, Shani Sniedze

Student learning processes

The Mathematics Anxiety and Engagement Strategy (MAES) was established by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) in 2018 in response to declining mathematics achievement and participation among Australian students. Findings from the 2022 cycle of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) show that 15-year-old students in Australia had significantly lower levels of mathematical literacy than students in 2003 (De Bortoli et al, 2023). The 2022 results also showed that male students outperformed female students and only 30 percent of students from more disadvantaged backgrounds achieved the National Proficient Standard in mathematics compared to 72 percent of students from …

This study investigated the effects of exogenous salicylic acid (SA) concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.3, or 0.5 mM), treatment timing (vegetative or reproductive period), and cultivation methods (soil or hydroponic cultivation) on the vase life of four lisianthus cultivars after flower cutting. A 0.5 mM concentration of the SA application during the reproductive period resulted in the longest average vase life of 15.3 d for the Blue Picote cultivar after flower cutting. A colorimeter and a chlorophyll meter were used to observe and quantify petal color changes after cutting, and the color changes during the senescence stages are visualized using a …

Mangroves are one of the most carbon-dense forests on the Earth and have been highlighted as key ecosystems for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Hundreds of studies have investigated how mangroves fix, transform, store, and export carbon. Here, we review and synthesize the previously known and emerging carbon pathways in mangroves, including gains (woody biomass accumulation, deadwood accumulation, soil carbon sequestration, root and litterfall production), transformations (food web transfer through herbivory, decomposition), and losses (respiration as CO2 and CH4, litterfall export, particulate and dissolved carbon export). We then review the technologies available to measure carbon fluxes in mangroves, their potential, …

Atlantic tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) are capable of long-distance migrations (hundreds of kilometers) but also exhibit resident behaviors in estuarine and coastal habitats. The aim of this study was to characterize the spatial distribution of juvenile tarpon and identify migration pathways of adult tarpon in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Spatial distribution of juvenile tarpon was investigated using gillnet data collected by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) over the past four decades. Generalized additive models (GAMs) indicated that salinity and water temperature played a significant role in tarpon presence, with tarpon occurrences peaking in the fall and increasing over the …

Toward A Latinx Stratification Economics, Stephan Lefebvre, Alan Aja, Nancy López, William A. Darity Jr., Darrick Hamilton

Faculty Journal Articles

This paper describes Latinx stratification economics (LSE) as a scholarly approach to studying the economic status of Latinas/os/es/xs primarily in the United States. We coin the term LSE to refer to work that draws on and is in conversation with both the emergent, interdisciplinary subfield of stratification economics (SE) and the interdisciplinary field of Latinx studies (LS). SE and LS have distinct intellectual traditions and drawing on both leads to strong theoretical and empirical scholarship on Latinxs, on the operation of race across space and historical time, and on the intersection of race with other systems of domination. We discuss …
