Anatomy And Physiology Of Intraosseous Infusion, Andrew Mizerowski, James Paxton
Anatomy And Physiology Of Intraosseous Infusion, Andrew Mizerowski, James Paxton
Medical Student Research Symposium
The introduction of fluids and medications via intraosseous (IO) infusion is highly dependent upon many unique aspects of bone anatomy and physiology. Key considerations include differences in the medullary cross-sectional area between insertion sites, age- and location-dependent variation in the distribution of red and yellow bone marrow, volume and pressure capacity within the venous system, and the influence of hormones and other chemical messengers on vasomotor tone. In addition to an exploration of these concepts, this chapter will also discuss the physiologic basis for pharmacokinetic relationships reported in the prevailing literature and propose methods to optimize the use of IO …

Fear-based disorders, including anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder, are more prevalent in females than males. Steroid hormones (e.g., estradiol) are involved in fear extinction learning and later recall—a process implicated in the pathophysiology of fear-based disorders. Fear-based disorders commonly emerge during the transition from childhood to adolescence, a period marked by the onset of puberty and a natural increase of steroid hormones. Here, we examined the effects of puberty, sex, and their interaction on extinction recall and underlying neural circuitry in youth. Eighty-five youth (6-17 years, 46% female) completed a two-day Pavlovian fear extinction paradigm while undergoing functional magnetic resonance …

Medical Student Research Symposium
Purpose:
Arab Americans are one of the largest ethnic groups in the United States. Despite elevated incidence of mental illness and diminished rates of treatment within this community, the mental health of Arab Americans, along with their attitudes towards mental health, has not received adequate study. Unique cultural interpretations of mental illness may engender stigma, exacerbating disparities in treatment. This study aimed to assess the attitudes and perspectives of Arab Americans concerning mental illness, with the goal of identifying and addressing barriers to treatment.
Methods:
Using an anonymous bilingual Qualtrics survey, we assessed Arab and non-Arab participants (n = 294; …

Six-Month Report Assessing The Feasibility And Effectiveness Of Amniotic Membrane Injections In Patients With Short, Anterior, Urethral Strictures, Nicholas Pryde, Jack Vernocke, Aron Liaw, Michael Sessine, Nivedita Dhar
Medical Student Research Symposium
Introduction: Urethral stricture treatment has high recurrence rates and adjunct injectable agents have been explored. Amniotic membranes (AM) promote apoptosis of pro-inflammatory cells, prevent differentiation of pro-fibrotic cells, and decrease scar formation. These tissues generated interest in reconstructive urethral surgery. Thus, we performed urethral dilation combined with micronized AM injection in urethral scar tissue for treatment of urethral stricture.
Materials and Methods: Adult males with strictures ≤12Fr in diameter and ≤2 cm in length, International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) ≥11 and maximum flowrate <15 ml/s. Reconstituted 100mg micronized AM was injected at the time of urethral dilation. Primary study end point was anatomical success (≥14Fr by cystoscopy) at 6 months. Secondary end points were questionnaires, flow rate, and post void residual. Outcomes assessed at baseline, 5 days, 14 days, 3 months, and 6 months post-injection. Safety was analyzed.
Results: Ten men, mean age of 52 ± 15 years, were included. There were 7 patients with …

Biological Sex Is A Predictor Of Pretibial Subcutaneous Tissue Depth For Intraosseous Catheter Insertion, Alex Duvall, Thomas Sprys-Tellner, Tristan Lemon, Ryan Kelly, Andrew Stefan, James Paxton
Medical Student Research Symposium
Introduction
Intraosseous (IO) vascular access is most commonly used when critical patients need rapid establishment of vascular access. They have shown high rates of successful placement, with the proximal tibia showing the highest first-attempt success rates. Proper establishment of vascular access requires a needle properly sized to enter the bony cortex and stay there. In this study, we analyzed demographic associations with pre-tibial subcutaneous tissue depth (PTSTD).
Methods
The PTSTD was calculated using computed tomography (CT) images of adult (³ 18 years old) patients. Variables including side, age, sex, height, weight, BMI, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and …

Hif Expression In Clear-Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (Ccrcc) Tumors Of Adults With And Without Obstructive Sleep Apnea (Osa), Olivia Heppell, Carlos Guerra Londono, Nilesh Gupta
Medical Student Research Symposium
Introduction: Upregulation of hypoxia-inducible factors (HIF) is an important pathological feature shared by clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, it is unclear whether OSA alters the pathogenesis of ccRCC via HIF expression.
Methods: A retrospective cohort of adults undergoing nephrectomy for ccRCC was identified electronically (IRB#16040-1). The diagnosis of OSA was established with preoperative STOP-BANG scores or polysomnography. A consecutive sample of 20 individuals with and 20 without OSA was selected. Clinical characteristics and pathology results were reviewed. Resected tumor sections were immunohistochemically stained for HIF-1& HIF-2 at antibody dilutions of 1:150. Intensity and …

Epithelial And Mesenchymal Olfactory Stem Cells Gathered With Minimally-Invasive Micro-Brush, Tyler Petersen
Medical Student Research Symposium
Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes devastating lifestyle and financial consequences for the patient. Treatment strategies emphasize neuroprotection, but not regeneration. In this regard, stem cells are an innovative field of study that has the potential to regenerate neural tissue, thereby increasing a person’s ability to regain function. The purpose of this project is two-fold: to attain olfactory stem cells located in the nasal canal in a minimally-invasive way and to gather neural cells from the epithelium and mesenchymal cells in the lamina propria. Cells were gathered with sterile nasal micro-brushes, stored, and grown in flasks. After cells reached confluency, they …

Journal of Health Research
Background: Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a prevalent mitochondrial disease that is predominantly caused by mitochondrial (mtDNA) mutations. However, not all siblings with identical LHON mutations develop visual impairment, suggesting the influence of nuclear genetic variants. This study explores the role of these variants in LHON expression among siblings and relatives with the same maternal LHON mutations.
Methods: A family with a homoplasmic G11778A mutation displaying significant LHON penetrance (50% in female carriers) was examined. Exome sequencing was performed on four members (two affected, two unaffected). Detected variations were predicted using a Variant Effect Predictor (VEP) with …

In the past decade tRNA sequencing (tRNA-seq) has attracted considerable attention as an important tool for the development of novel approaches to quantify highly modified tRNA species and to propel tRNA research aimed at understanding the cellular physiology and disease and development of tRNA-based therapeutics. Many methods are available to quantify tRNA abundance while accounting for modifications and tRNA charging/acylation. Advances in both library preparation methods and bioinformatic workflows have enabled developments in next-generation sequencing (NGS) workflows. Other approaches forgo NGS applications in favor of hybridization-based approaches. In this review we provide a brief comparative overview of various tRNA quantification …

The Linnett Double Quartet (LDQ) (1) and Bohr Orbit Bonding (BOB) (2) methods were used to accurately represent the spin density distribution for superoxide (O2 -) and hydroperoxyl radical (HO2). These structural pictures were superimposed on the spin density plot produced by DFT. The Valency Interaction Formula (VIF) method (3) was also applied to these molecules and it matched the NBOs from NBO analysis of DFT results. The interaction between O2 - and H2O were analyzed and the stronger basicity of the beta-spin electrons of superoxide was identified by looking at the LDQ structure and confirmed with NBO analysis.
