Honey Bee Colony Behavior And Ontogeny Are Adversely Affected When Exposed To A Pesticide-Contaminated Environment, Rogan Tokach, Autumn H. Smart, Carol Fassbinder-Orth, Chandler Fong, Judy Wu-Smart
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Honey bees exhibit age polyethism and thus have a predictable sequence of behaviors they express through developmental time. Numerous laboratory studies show exposure to pesticides may impair critical honey bee behaviors (brood care, foraging, egg-laying, etc.) that adversely affect colony productivity and survival. There are fewer studies that examine the impacts of pesticides in natural field settings, especially given the challenges of implementing treatment groups and controlling variables. This study helps address the need for impact studies on pollinators under field conditions to assess the consequences of chemical overuse and dependency in agricultural and urban landscapes. To assess the impact …
Spectralomics – Towards A Holistic Adaptation Of Label Free Spectroscopy, Hugh Byrne
Spectralomics – Towards A Holistic Adaptation Of Label Free Spectroscopy, Hugh Byrne
Articles
Vibrational spectroscopy, largely based on infrared absorption and Raman scattering techniques, is much vaunted as a label free approach, delivering a high content, holistic characterisation of a sample, with demonstrable applications in a broad range of fields, from process analytical technologies and preclinical drug screening, to disease diagnostics, therapeutics, prognostics and personalised medicine. However, in the analysis of such complex systems, a trend has emerged in which spectral analysis is reduced to the identification of individual peaks, based on reference tables of assignments derived from literature, which are then interpreted as biomarkers. More sophisticated analysis attempts to unmix the spectrum …

We develop six-dimensional single-molecule orientation-localization microscopy (SMOLM) to measure the 3D positions and 3D orientations simultaneously of single fluorophores. We show how careful optimization of phase and polarization modulation components can encode phase, polarization, and angular spectrum information from each fluorescence photon into a microscope’s dipole-spread function. We used the transient binding and blinking of Nile red (NR) to characterize the helical structure of fibrils formed by designed amphipathic peptides, KFE8L and KFE8D, and the pathological amyloid-beta peptide Aβ42. We also deployed merocyanine 540 to uncover the interfacial architectures of biomolecular condensates.

Synchrony In Networks Of Type 2 Interneurons Is More Robust To Noise With Hyperpolarizing Inhibition Compared To Shunting Inhibition In Both The Stochastic Population Oscillator And The Coupled Oscillator Regimes, Roman Baravalle, Carmen C. Canavier
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
Synchronization in the gamma band (25–150 Hz) is mediated by PV+ inhibitory interneurons, and evidence is accumulating for the essential role of gamma oscillations in cognition. Oscillations can arise in inhibitory networks via synaptic interactions between individual oscillatory neurons (mean-driven) or via strong recurrent inhibition that destabilizes the stationary background firing rate in the fluctuation-driven balanced state, causing an oscillation in the population firing rate. Previous theoretical work focused on model neurons with Hodgkin’s Type 1 excitability (integrators) connected by current-based synapses. Here we show that networks comprised of simple Type 2 oscillators (resonators) exhibit a supercritical Hopf bifurcation between …
Preventing Orthopedic Implant Associated Biofilm Infections Using Transition Metal Complex Laminated Bioactive Implants, Sowndarya J
Theses and Dissertations
Orthopedic implants are medical devices employed to repair the damaged structure and function of an injured musculoskeletal system. It helps millions of people suffering from bone fractures and arthroplasty. The increased use of orthopedic implants has given rise to implant-associated biofilm infections. Biofilm-mediated Implant-associated osteomyelitis (IAO) is a major concern in the medical field, wherein the treatment involves debridement, administration of antibiotics and removal of implants leading to increased cost of treatment.
The keystone bacterial pathogens involved in orthopedic implant-associated infections are Staphylococcus aureus and Acinetobacter baumannii which are members of the ESKAPE pathogens. A. baumannii has gained resistance against …

Effects Of Individual Quality On Reproduction: Investigating Double Brooding And Egg Pigmentation In House Wrens ( Troglodytes Aedon ), Lauren Marie Leischner
Theses and Dissertations
Some species produce two broods in a season to maximize reproductive success; however, in species such as the house wren (Troglodytes aedon), not all individuals produce a second brood. We completed a cross-fostering experiment and examined the effects of individual characteristics on the probability of producing a second brood using breeding records from a long-term dataset. There was little evidence that the individual traits we examined affected the production of a second brood. However, the production of a second brood was significantly repeatable, indicating that individual characteristics have a substantial effect on the likelihood of producing a second brood. Eggshell …

An efficient and sustainable agriculture calls for the development of novel agrochemical delivery systems able to release agrochemicals in a controlled manner. This study investigated the controlled release of the insecticide methoxyfenozide (MFZ) from lignin (LN) nanoparticles (LNPs). LN-grafted poly(ϵ-caprolactone) (LN-g-PCL) polymers were synthesized using two grafting methods, ring-opening polymerization (ROP)(LN-g-PCLp) and acylation reaction (LN-g-PCLa), creating polymers capable of self-assembling into nanoparticles of different properties, without surfactants. The LN-g-PCLp polymers exhibited a degree of polymerization (DP) from 22 to 101, demonstrating enhanced thermal stability after LN incorporation. LNPs loaded with MFZ exhibited a spherical core-shell structure with a hydrophilic LN …

The human gastrointestinal system is a complex ecosystem crucial for well-being. During sepsis-induced gut injury, the integrity of the intestinal barrier can be compromised. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an endotoxin from Gram-negative bacteria, disrupts the intestinal barrier, contributing to inflammation and various dysfunctions. The current study explores the protective effects of limonene, a natural compound with diverse biological properties, against LPS-induced jejunal injury in mice. Oral administration of limonene at dosages of 100 and 200 mg/kg was used in the LPS mouse model. The Murine Sepsis Score (MSS) was utilized to evaluate the severity of sepsis, while serum levels of urea and …

Techno-Legal Solutionism: Regulating Children's Online Safety In The United States, Maria P. Angel, Danah Boyd
Scholarly Works
Convinced that social media is directly harming children, policymakers have started to introduce legislation that requires technology companies to be safe by design through “duty of care” provisions. Unlike regulations that focus on product safety, these bills incorporate technosolutionist logics into regulation by presuming that technology companies can remedy complex harms like mental health duress and bullying if their products were only designed better. In this paper, we unpack the theory of change at the center of the “duty of care” included in the “Kids Online Safety Act” (KOSA). We argue that techno-legal solutionism is both ineffective as a framework …

INTRODUCTION: Genetic variants contribute to differential responses to non-insulin antidiabetic drugs (NIADs), and consequently to variable plasma glucose control. Optimal control of plasma glucose is paramount to minimizing type 2 diabetes-related long-term complications. India's distinct genetic architecture and its exploding burden of type 2 diabetes warrants a population-specific survey of NIAD-associated pharmacogenetic (PGx) variants. The recent availability of large-scale whole genomes from the Indian population provides a unique opportunity to generate a population-specific map of NIAD-associated PGx variants.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We mined 1029 Indian whole genomes for PGx variants, drug-drug interaction (DDI) and drug-drug-gene interactions (DDGI) associated with …

Recent biological surveys of ancient inselbergs in southern Malawi and northern Mozambique have led to the discovery and description of many species new to science, and overlapping centres of endemism across multiple taxa. Combining these endemic taxa with data on geology and climate, we propose the 'South East Africa Montane Archipelago' (SEAMA) as a distinct ecoregion of global biological importance. The ecoregion encompasses 30 granitic inselbergs reaching > 1000 m above sea level, hosting the largest (Mt Mabu) and smallest (Mt Lico) mid-elevation rainforests in southern Africa, as well as biologically unique montane grasslands. Endemic taxa include 127 plants, 45 vertebrates …

Comparison Of Conventional And Adaptive Acoustic Beamforming Algorithms Using A Tetrahedral Microphone Array In Noisy Environments, Megan Brittany Ewers
Comparison Of Conventional And Adaptive Acoustic Beamforming Algorithms Using A Tetrahedral Microphone Array In Noisy Environments, Megan Brittany Ewers
Dissertations and Theses
In situ acoustic measurements are often plagued by interfering sound sources that occur within the measurement environment. Both adaptive and conventional beamforming algorithms, when applied to the outputs of a microphone array arranged in a tetrahedral geometry, are able to capture sound sources in desired directions and reject sound from unwanted directions. Adaptive algorithms may be able to measure a desired sound source with greater spatial precision, but require more calculations and, therefore, computational power. A conventional frequency-domain phase-shift algorithm and a modified adaptive frequency-domain Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR) algorithm were applied to simulated and recorded signals from a …

In 1743, with the naive belief that the Calusas were finally interested in Catholic conversion, two Jesuit missionaries traveled to South Florida from Havana, Cuba. For decades Europeans described the region-in documents and on maps-as all but devoid of human life and, in particular, its Indigenous populations as being virtually extinct. Instead, the Jesuits discovered that South Florida was very much still under Indigenous control. A number of distinct Native confederacies-including one that consisted of Calusas, Bocarratons, and "Key" Indians and another of what one Spaniard called Maymies, Santaluzos, and Mayacas-exerted not only territorial control but also control over the …

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), the largest flux of carbon in streams, is a vital metric in urban stream ecology that is often overlooked, especially on seasonal scales. Microorganisms metabolize DOC, which can decrease dissolved oxygen and pH and harm other aquatic species. Johnson Creek watershed, located in the Portland metro area, provides an ideal location to study the effect of urbanization on DOC and water quality resulting from channelization and urban land. We hypothesize that DOC will increase downstream as impervious surface cover and urbanization increase. To quantify DOC concentration temporal changes, surface water samples were collected weekly from three …
Why Is The Oaks Bottom Reservoir So Dead And Brown? A Success Story Of Purple Loosestrife Control, Laura Guderyahn
Why Is The Oaks Bottom Reservoir So Dead And Brown? A Success Story Of Purple Loosestrife Control, Laura Guderyahn
Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver
Ever since the early 1990’s, when a water control structure was used to flood the 60acre ponded wetland at Oaks Bottom to increase waterfowl overwintering habitat, Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) has thrived. Starting in 2008, Portland Parks and Recreation (PPR) and the Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) partnered with the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) to annually release thousands of three different species of biocontrol beetles throughout the wetland. However, the unnatural flooding regime due to the water control structure and a greatly undersized culvert connecting the refuge to the Willamette River, resulted in annual reproductive and overwintering …
