The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) is a highly influential and powerful behavior change model that offers promising guidance on promoting urgently needed, pro-environmental action. Recent pro-environmental research has successfully augmented TPB using anticipated emotions—the emotions an individual consciously predicts they will experience in relation to possible outcomes of their decision. However, immediate emotions—the emotions an individual actually experiences during decision-making—have received far less attention. Given that immediate emotions are relevant to pro-environmental decision-making and can address the theoretical and empirical limitations of TPB, we contend that pro-environmental studies should explicitly examine immediate emotions within the TPB framework. Debunking Myths of the Market in Bargaining for Faculty Gender Salary Equity
ABSTRACT
For over a century, feminists have challenged occupational gender segregation as a mechanism to rationalize the devaluing of work assigned to women. The social movement momentum in the second half of the twentieth century helped narrow gender pay gaps both within and across occupations. Recently, apologists for gender discrimination have gained ground in obfuscating the role of gender segregation in reproducing salary inequity, pointing to a black box of “market forces” that presumably account for the devaluing of feminized fields, inside …

The Role Of Age, Sex, And Mglur5 Receptors In Hippocampal Depotentiation In Mice, Michael Dew
The Role Of Age, Sex, And Mglur5 Receptors In Hippocampal Depotentiation In Mice, Michael Dew
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Synaptic plasticity of excitatory hippocampal circuits is one of the primary cellular mechanisms of learning and memory. Synaptic plasticity is also implicated in many disease states such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and Alzheimer disease. Long-term potentiation (LTP) is the plastic strengthening of synapses, while long-term depression (LTD) is the weakening of synapses. Depotentiation is the process of reversing previously established long-term potentiation. Depotentiation has not been studied as thoroughly as long-term potentiation and long-term depression. We examined the role of age, metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5), and sex in the process of CA1 hippocampal depotentiation in young CD-1 mice …

Rising soil salinity levels worldwide have resulted in the loss of millions of hectares of viable cropland. Several solutions to this problem have been posited, including looking into the properties of salt-tolerant plants. Recent research into salttolerant plants in southern Utah has found a host of microorganisms isolated from the soil, plant surfaces, or plant tissues that stimulate salt tolerance in alfalfa. Leveraging a Mobile-CRISPRi system to repress a library of genes created through the recently developed sgRNA Library Assembly by Ligation onto Magnetic Beads (SLALOM) protocol, we induced genome-wide repression of genes in Kushneria spp. grown under optimal and …

Roles Of Bryophytes In Forest Sustainability—Positive Or Negative?, Janice M. Glime
Roles Of Bryophytes In Forest Sustainability—Positive Or Negative?, Janice M. Glime
Michigan Tech Publications
Bryophytes were traditionally ignored in most studies of forest ecosystem processes, or they were included with litter or soil. In the last few decades we have begun to understand their many roles that permit them to be ecosystem engineers. This review serves to pull together many scattered sources into a single source on the many contributions bryophytes can perform as ecosystem engineers and to support what several authors have already stressed: that bryophytes should not be treated as a single functional group. It puts bryophytes in perspective in terms of richness and biomass, then explores their roles as ecosystem engineers; …

Synthetic peptides that self-assemble into cross-β fibrils are versatile building blocks for engineered biomaterials due to their modularity and biocompatibility, but their structural and morphological similarities to amyloid species have been a long-standing concern for their translation. Further, their polymorphs are difficult to characterize using spectroscopic and imaging techniques that rely on ensemble averaging to achieve high resolution. Here, we utilize Nile red (NR), an amyloidophilic fluorogenic probe, and single-molecule orientation-localization microscopy (SMOLM) to characterize fibrils formed by the designed amphipathic enantiomers KFE8L and KFE8D and the pathological amyloid-beta peptide Aβ42. Importantly, NR SMOLM reveals the helical (bilayer) …
Identification Of A Novel Target For Declustering Supernumerary Centrosomes In Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Priyanga J
Identification Of A Novel Target For Declustering Supernumerary Centrosomes In Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Priyanga J
Theses and Dissertations
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) confers considerable interventional challenge owing to its massive heterogeneity, aggression and metastatic prowess. These facets are attributed to chromosomal instability (CIN), a feature consequent to TNBC cell’s ability to harbor more than two centrosomes (supernumerary centrosomes; SNCs).
In principle, if a normal cell possesses SNCs, uneven pull forces are generated consequent to multipolar spindle, which activates cellular surveillance. This ensures error-free mitosis by either repairing the error or, in an irreparable condition, driving cells to death. This averts the possibility of aneuploidy (fundamental to tumorigenesis).
Unfortunately, TNBC cells, despite harboring SNCs, have devised a survival strategy …

Avena sativa phototropin 1 light-oxygen-voltage 2 domain (AsLOV2) is a model protein of Per-Arnt-Sim (PAS) superfamily, characterized by conformational changes in response to external environmental stimuli. This conformational change begins with the unfolding of the N-terminal A'α helix in the dark state followed by the unfolding of the C-terminal Jα helix. The light state is characterized by the unfolded termini and the subsequent modifications in hydrogen bond patterns. In this photoreceptor, β-sheets are identified as crucial components for mediating allosteric signal transmission between the two termini. Through combined experimental and computational investigations, the Hβ …

Currently, more than half of the world’s human population lives in urban areas, which are increasingly affected by climate hazards. Little is known about how multi-hazard environments affect people, especially those living in urban areas in northern latitudes. This study surveyed homeowners in Anchorage and Fairbanks, USA, Alaska’s largest urban centers, to measure individual risk perceptions, mitigation response, and damages related to wildfire, surface ice hazards, and permafrost thaw. Up to one third of residents reported being affected by all three hazards, with surface ice hazards being the most widely distributed, related to an estimated $25 million in annual damages. …

Bacterial symbionts are essential components of healthy biological systems. They are increasingly recognized as important factors in the study and management of threatened species and ecosystems. Despite management shifts at the ecosystem level, microbial communities are often neglected in discussions of holobiont conservation in favor of the primary members of a symbiosis. In this study, we addressed the bacterial community knowledge gap for one of two federally endangered lichen species in the United States, Cetradonia linearis (Cladoniaceae). We collected 28 samples of the endangered rock gnome lichen (Cetradonia linearis) from 13 sites and characterized bacterial communities in thalli using 16S …

Cancer cells often exhibit resistance to apoptotic cell death, but they may be vulnerable to other types of cell death. Elucidating additional mechanisms that govern cancer cell death is crucial for developing new therapies. Our research identified cyclic AMP-responsive element-binding protein 3 (CREB3) as a crucial regulator and initiator of a unique cell death mechanism known as karyoptosis. This process is characterized by nuclear shrinkage, deformation, and the loss of nuclear components following nuclear membrane rupture. We found that the N-terminal domain (aa 1-230) of full-length CREB3 (CREB3-FL), which is anchored to the nuclear inner membrane (INM), interacts with lamins …
Synthesis And Functional Properties Of Metal Chalcogenide Semiconductors, Jiang Luo
Synthesis And Functional Properties Of Metal Chalcogenide Semiconductors, Jiang Luo
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Metal chalcogenides exhibit perovskite, chiral, and layered structures, and accommodate many atoms from periodic table, providing abundant properties such as ferroelectricity, circular dichroism, and anisotropic carrier transport. Those various physical properties make metal chalcogenides promising for the applications from electronics to optoelectronics, such as thermoelectrics, photovoltaics, and photodetectors. The upper limit of carrier mobility, termed as intrinsic carrier mobility, is the key factor that determine the performance of the semiconductor-based applications. However, either experiments or first-principle calculations are challenging to obtain the intrinsic carrier mobility over a wide class of materials. I found a descriptor that have a good correlation …

Although adverse environmental exposures are considered a major cause of chronic diseases, current studies provide limited information on real-world chemical exposures and related risks. For this study, we collected serum samples from 5696 healthy people and patients, including those with 12 chronic diseases, in China and completed serum biomonitoring including 267 chemicals via gas and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Seventy-four highly frequently detected exposures were used for exposure characterization and risk analysis. The results show that region is the most critical factor influencing human exposure levels, followed by age. Organochlorine pesticides and perfluoroalkyl substances are associated with multiple chronic diseases, …

The development of cancer is an evolutionary process involving the sequential acquisition of genetic alterations that disrupt normal biological processes, enabling tumor cells to rapidly proliferate and eventually invade and metastasize to other tissues. We investigated the genomic evolution of prostate cancer through the application of three separate classification methods, each designed to investigate a different aspect of tumor evolution. Integrating the results revealed the existence of two distinct types of prostate cancer that arise from divergent evolutionary trajectories, designated as the Canonical and Alternative evolutionary disease types. We therefore propose the evotype model for prostate cancer evolution wherein Alternative-evotype …

Seasonal coronaviruses (HCoVs) are known to contribute to cross-reactive antibody (Ab) responses against SARS-CoV-2. While these responses are predictable due to the high homology between SARS-CoV-2 and other CoVs, the impact of these responses on susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection in cancer patients is unclear. To investigate the influence of prior HCoV infection on anti- SARS-CoV-2 Ab responses among COVID-19 asymptomatic individuals with cancer and controls without cancers, we utilized the VirScan technology in which phage immunoprecipitation and sequencing (PhIP-seq) of longitudinal plasma samples was performed to investigate high-resolution (i.e., epitope level) humoral CoV responses. Despite testing positive for anti-SARS-CoV-2 Ab …

Immunotherapy may enhance antitumor activity in combination with standard therapies in patients with mCRC. Here, we present phase 2 results of nivolumab plus standard-of-care therapy (SOC; 5-fluorouracil/leucovorin/oxaliplatin/bevacizumab) versus SOC in the first-line treatment of patients with mCRC (CheckMate 9X8).
Methods: CheckMate 9X8 was a multicenter, open-label, randomized, phase 2/3 trial. Eligible patients were at least 18 years of age with unresectable mCRC and no prior chemotherapy for metastatic disease. Patients were randomized 2:1 to receive nivolumab 240 mg plus SOC …

Urbanization poses significant challenges to wildlife, including amphibians. The present study uses a multi-parameter approach that incorporates veterinary techniques to investigate the current health status of the adult southern leopard frogs (Lithobates sphenocephalus) in Tampa Bay, Florida, amidst urban stressors including nutrient loading, fragmented habitats, and light and noise pollution. Novel values for fluctuating asymmetry (e.g., variation between left and right bilateral traits; FA), body condition (CF), stress (e.g., neutrophil:lymphocyte (N:L) ratio), and inflammation (e.g., neutrophil morphologic abnormalities, parasite load) are reported. I also investigate the relationship of overall health with ranavirus presence and hemoparasite infections. Ranavirus was absent in …

Cardiovascular diseases are a significant cause of illness and death worldwide, often resulting in myofibroblast differentiation, pathological remodeling, and fibrosis, characterized by excessive extracellular matrix protein deposition. Treatment options for cardiac fibrosis that can effectively target myofibroblast activation and ECM deposition are limited, necessitating an unmet need for new therapeutic approaches. In recent years, microcurrent therapy has demonstrated promising therapeutic effects, showcasing its translational potential in cardiac care. This study therefore sought to investigate the effects of microcurrent therapy on cardiac myofibroblasts, aiming to unravel its potential as a treatment for cardiac fibrosis and heart failure. The experimental design involved …

Interrelationships Among Local Values Of Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, Heat Index, And Adjusted Temperature, Andrea Giraldo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Occupational heat stress significantly affects outdoor workers who face challenges due to increased heat exposure. Because of the prevalence of heat illness, it is important to measure heat stress for outdoor workers. Monitoring occupational heat stress most often relies on the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) measure. Heat Index (HI) is a widely used measure to account for air temperature and humidity. Adjusted Temperature (Tadj) considers air temperature, humidity and estimates radiant heat. There is interest in predicting WBGT from HI and HI from WBGT. This study builds on previous USF research by Bernard and Iheanacho and Irvin to evaluate …
